Geraldine Ferraro Praises Obama Yesterday?

Geraldine Ferraro Praises Barack Obama In a Speech Yesterday

RENO - Ex-Democratic vice presidential candidate Geraldine Ferraro praised the Nevada Women's Fund on Tuesday for using their resources to help young women overcome adversity in the same way Barack Obama beat long odds to become his party's presidential nominee.

"I want a fairer country for women and girls - black, white, yellow or brown, I don't care what color. And I'm not going to stop pushing. You women are empowered to help make that happen," Ferraro told about 1,000 people at the nonprofit group's 17th annual "Salute to Women of Achievement."

"Last year at this time, when Sen. Obama announced for the presidency, people white and black alike said, 'You can't do it. This country is not ready for a black man to be nominated president of the United States,"'she said.

"Well, he said, 'Yes, we can.' And he didn't wait for someone to give it to him, he worked hard and he earned the nomination," said the former New York congresswoman, who became the first woman on a major party's presidential ticket as Walter Mondale's running mate in 1984.

"And now today, the Nevada Women's Fund and your honorees' devotion to fairness, you are also saying, 'Yes, we can.' And I have no doubt that together, we will be successful."

I think I just heard the clouds part rather noisily, and with an angelic choir singing their praises.

I'm guessing Senator Clinton got to Geraldine Ferraro in this instance. I

she is a great woman and a well respected one at that , despite the efforts of some folks who try to say otherwise who should know better.

regardless of her intentions she worded things very badly with her comments during the primary.

somewhat mild... (none / 0)

She didn't word things poorly. She was wrong... and depressingly so.

Good people can be wrong sometimes... even often... and then turn around and be right, or wrong, again.

We will just have to disagree.  She is a racist who behaved despicably in the primary.

You won't see me forgiving her either.

Just like I never forgave Papa Bush or Cheney for voting against civil rights.

I know these people are good Democrats.  I just wish the rhetoric hadn't gotten so heated during the primary.

Must be the pod people. (2.00 / 1)

Someone should do some serious investigating and see if Kodos and/or Kang were nearby when she gave this speech...

just STFU, let folks vent, let folks be hesitant, and let time heal all wounds.  Most dem.s WILL come home - - if you leave them alone and stop the gratuitous "did you hear about Gina Gershon" comments.
FWIW, in the interim, do we STILL need Aravosis and Sullivan posting daily Clinton slams ???

Re: Again, sometimes Obama folk need to (none / 0)

I have tried to make that point..

Some would say because Hillary Clinton said this , then her supporters must toe the line.

Why not just let each individual come to his/her own decision.

At the end of the day , odds are they would line up where Clinton is , and if some don't its their choice.

I agree with your assessment of Aravosis, but Sullivan is not, nor has ever been, a Democrat.  So how does what he says have anything to do with Democrats unifying for the General against McCain?

Sullivan's a major Obama supporter (1.00 / 0)

, gets fed stuff from them 24/7, one phone call from Axelrod, and he backs off the Hillary slams.  Right?

Hooooooly crap. She actually said he 'earned the nomination'. Absolutely fantastic.

This was the ONE Clinton surrogate that I believed had completely gone off the rails and would be bashing Obama until the end of time. Everyone else made sense in one way or another, but when I heard Ferraro speak about how lucky Obama was to be black I truly thought she had lost her mind.

If Geraldine Ferraro can come on board, ANYBODY can.

That woman is disgusting. I have no doubt that the only reason she made these comments is due to Hillary telling her to cool the rhetoric and "fall in line."

Thankfully many folks know how to process new information as they come in as shown by comments on the post by former critics.

Re: Geraldine Ferraro Praises Obama Yesterday? (2.00 / 1)

Ferraro got a really raw deal from the media and the Obama blogs and most Obama suppoters know it and counted on it. This was and remains the biggest turnoff of the "clean" campaign, embodying the expression "will do anything to get elected."

Re: nobody held a gun to her head (2.00 / 1)

"If Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position," Ferraro told California's "Daily Breeze" newspaper. "And if he was a woman (of any color) he would not be in this position. He happens to be very lucky to be who he is. And the country is caught up in the concept."

"Every time that campaign is upset about something, they call it racist," she said. "I will not be discriminated against because I'm white. If they think they're going to shut up Geraldine Ferraro with that kind of stuff, they don't know me."

she deserved: (none / 0)

exactly what she got. She condoned a point of view of subtle institutional racism that should be excused by NO ONE... including supporters of Senator Clinton who respect the accomplishments she has made in spite of being a woman rather than because she was a woman. Ferraro was wrong, and then proceeded to dig herself a larger hole. She is welcome back, and it doesn't mean she is a bad person... but forgiving her by revisionist history won't fly.

logical fallacy... (2.00 / 0)

namely...

I can acknowledge everything good about Ferraro and still call her blatantly wrong on her statements concerning Obama and his campaign referenced above. I haven't attacked her character at all... her STATEMENTS were wrong and indefensible.
