I agree with John Mcain. I bet you do, too.

We can all agree McCain is right to say, "Elections have consequences." He uses that line whenever he talks about the Supreme Court. He knows Supreme Court appointments are the most enduring legacies presidents can leave behind. That is where we part company with him. Given there are 4 conservatives already on the court, this comment from a recent Wall Street Journal article takes on special meaning:
A March poll of 1,200 women in 16 battleground states, commissioned by Planned Parenthood, showed that about half of the women who backed McCain also support abortion rights.
Given McCain's solid anti-choice voting record, it is not suprising the poll found:
Half of the women surveyed in the poll also said they didn't know "enough about McCain's views on abortion to say whether he is in step or out of step with their own outlook."
Time for some consciousness raising...

I imagine that Obama is saving this one (none / 0)

I mean, he doesn't really need to bring it up; McCain's website itself is fairly explicit in saying "I will overthrow Roe v. Wade," but it doesn't make sense to even mention it heavily until closer to the election.

I think we too often lose sight of the big picture (2.00 / 2)

It is easy to get caught up in the news cycle, the daily spin, etc. But when you step back and think about it, these slow moving targets are much more important. Think back to 2000. What was the big issue? Social Security. What will be Bush's legacy? Iraq and the Supreme Court. We need to remember the long view is important.

I trust Obama (none / 0)

He's been strong and consistant with the points he brings up.  He is actively courting evangelicals right now, and it wouldn't pay to beat them over the head with his pro-choice status until they are on board with his plan to reduce abortions by 90% over 10 years.

The Doug Kmiec issue is a good enough news surrogate for that, I think.  I bet a lot of Catholics aren't too happy that someone is refused communion because they support a political candidate... and the one that is more for ending war, feeding the hungry, housing the homeless, etc.

Re: I trust Obama (none / 0)

Agreed on Obama, but we DO need to make it ABSOLUTELY CLEAR where McCain stands on this issue. Imagine if ANOTHER 5-8% of women who currently will vote for John McCain wouldn't if they knew his stance.

I am sure there are women who disagree with McCain on abortion but agree with him on other issues.
