Update on the McCain Project (SEO)

I am going to update everyone on the project Chris Bowers came up with, you know the one with the nine articles we want to push up into the top 20 search results for John McCain and McCain.

Well early this morning (around 3am CST) I reported these resutls:

For John McCain:
#20 Mother Jones 100 years in Iraq (up from in the top thirty)
#33 CBS News Defending Bush's Iraq Strategy
#42 AOL Filibustering the Minimum Wage Increase
#185 LA Times Defending Nafta

(That is all I could find in the top 300 for for John McCain)

Now onto McCain:
#27 CBS NEWS Defending Bush's Iraq Strategy
#36 AOL Filibustering the Minimum Wage Increase
#38 MSNBC Housing policy created by lobbyists
#40 Mother Jones 100 Years in Iraq
#101 LA Times Defending Nafta

That is all within the top 300 for McCain.

Here are the results at around 7pm CST:

For John McCain

#20 Mother Jones 100 years in Iraq
#32 CBS News Defending Bush's Iraq Strategy (up one from last night)
#44 AOL Filibustering the Minimum wage (down 2 from last night
#45 USA Today Overturning Roe V Wade (unranked last night up over 250 spots!!)
(the defending Nafta piece by the LA Times is no longer with in the top 300.  Overall a big improvement with John McCain due to the USA Today article springing up the rankings and the CBS news article inching up one.  The Mother Jones article held it's place which is good.  The bad news is that the Defending Nafta piece dropped like a rock and the AOL piece inched down 2 spots.  We have a good start but we need to do more to bump up these insightful articles on John McCain.

Now looking at McCain.

#21 CBS News Defending Bush's Iraq Policy (up 6 from last night)
#36 AOL Filibustering Minimum Wage Increase (steady from last night)
#39 MSNBC Housing Plan created by Lobbyists (down 1 from last night)
#64 Mother Jones 100 Years in Iraq (down 24 from last night)

(That is all of the results within the top 300 for McCain)

With regards to McCain we took a beating our top article moved up a bit but all of our other articles dropped.  I don't know why this is but we do need to counteract this if we are to make Chris Bower's project a success.

Go check it out here http:www.dailykos.com/story/2008/5/29/13 1437/342 (I broke the link on purpose so as not to drive this up on the google rankings, just copy and paste from the www.  If you can't stand Orange let me know and I'll give you a link to FDL or Catalics (broken of course).

My comparison (2.00 / 1)

Re: My comparison (2.00 / 1)

Perhaps minor fluctuations are normal. Come to think of it I know my website fluctuates between 1-3 on my important search terms even when I or my competitors don't change anything as far as I can tell.

Re: My comparison (2.00 / 1)

Of course this changes frequently, but I believe Google does a "big crawl" much less frequently - a more significant change is likely to be measured on the space of weeks or even months, not days or hours.

Luckily, we have a couple of weeks/months to go.

Re: My comparison (2.00 / 1)

I imagine people will be swimming through the tubes trying to  figure a few things out months from now, when the campaigns are in full swing, rather than now so hopefully this will be effective.

Tips (2.00 / 3)

For a status report (though it isn't great news) on beating John McCain.

remember you can do this at other sites like newspaper websites or sports websites.  Just embed John McCain or McCain and you are doing your part.

Can you link (1.50 / 4)

to the math or tech behind this, because I was under the impression that multiples on the same site only worked to a degree then became less effective the more there were. Maybe breadth is what we should concentrate on.

No I can't (2.00 / 1)

I know very little about SEO.  I know that including lots of plain text when you hit McCain helps.

Thanks for keeping us updated. (2.00 / 2)

I guess we should be embedding more John McCain links.

I oppose this (none / 0)

Googlebombing:

A:  Fucks up legitimate google searches.  If there is something specific about McCain I want to find this gets in the way.

B: Changes no minds.

C:  Is frankly, childish.

Re: I oppose this (2.00 / 1)

Ir's not like the articles aren't relevant. Why would that get in the way?

Re: I oppose this (none / 0)

It gives unnatural weight to certain articles.  The article I want may watch the same keywords, but be pushed way down the list because of less artificial linking.

Re: I oppose this (none / 0)

You might be right, but it gives us something at least moderately constructive to focus on besides the clusterfuck end to the primary season.
