Voter Suppression in W. Virginia? [Updated]

While it's understandable that Barack Obama would like to minimize Hillary Clinton's popular vote gain in upcoming primaries, I would assume that he'd do so by advertising and campaigning in the states to turn out his own vote.  And not like this...I truly hope that his campaign has not stooped this low.

I just received this via an e-mail list, and I would like to know from Senator Obama whether it is true:

Could you pass some info on to the rest of the callers that are calling into WV?

I've been talking with some people already on the ground in WV and the Obama camp is calling voters, NOT to get out the vote, but to ask for money - campaign donations. The gist of the call is that its not important that they vote, because the election is over, and then they ask for money to help put this primary campaign to an end and move on to the general election. Basically, they are telling voters its over. Then they ask for $400 donations...

And here is my open message to Barack Obama...

Senator Obama:

What is going on?  Is your campaign instructing staff and volunteers to urge the citizens of West Virginia to stay home, and not to vote?  I hope not, because that would be a serious obstruction of democracy.  As you know, in a democracy citizens should be encouraged to participate in elections.  You yourself have expressed pride in registering new voters and engaging people in the democratic process.

I implore you to immediately issue a cease-and-desist instruction to your campaign staff and volunteers for this kind of activity.

UPDATE: Based on comments, I want to explain, for those who are not involved in phone-banking for either candidate, that the calling lists always include supporters or leaners for both candidates and, crucially, undecided voters. Any Obama volunteer who has made more than a few calls would know this.

I heard something from Christopher Hitchens (posted here, b/c I can't take the media anymore, but you great people can and bring me the good stuff).

Hitchens-- you know him, writes for Vanity Fair, English, fat, drunk, mean, hates God, was and still is for Iraq, was a Marxist historian and I don't know what he is now-- but I think he's still a self-described Marxist.

Anyway, he can be wrong, he's always a pain, but he NEVER lies. He's the first real person who I heard say Obama had a racist church. Then I knew it really was separatist and crazy.

Hitchens is a horrible, mean creature but he would never lie about this.

This week, Hitchens as an Oxford trained historian said Farrakhan admitted to having Malcolm X killed. Terrible right? Farrakhan had Malcolm X executed by his church because of an internal fight-- and he said he was "policing his own." As I said, if horrible Hitchens said it, it's evidently true even though I don't like the guy too much.

Well.......DID REVEREND WRIGHT DO A FARRAKHAN on his own gay members? What's going on? I can't keep up.

What is it about Senator Obama that inspires and attracts and frees people who choose him to behave with such mean-spirited arrogance and aggression?
If the rules of civility go first and then reasoned discourse and then any notion of equal value and equal voice, then we should be ...what? Enticed to join them? Convinced to trust him to manage the Free World?

Judging from the way he treats Hillary , the primary proccess and voters and looking at the actions of so many of his supporters, you couldn't safely put Senator Obama in charge of a schoolyard at recess.

The primary process? You're gonna seriously discuss who treated the "primary process" with greater respect? Or the voters?

You're gonna seriously argue that Hillary Clinton respected all that, and Obama didn't?

Hillary Clinton, the person whose campaign has so far dismissed:

  • young people as Kool-Aid drinkers
  • liberals as latte-sippers
  • African-Americans as uninteresting bloc-voters
  • caucus-goers as undemocratic
  • red-staters as irrelevant?

And Hillary Clinton so respects the process:

  • she counts the SDs... except when she starts losing them at which point they should only be counted in Denver, not before
  • she agrees not to participate in Michigan and then she goes to participate. She said that the votes won't count there, and then argues that they do.
  • she says that the process would be over by February, but now it's the height of arrogance from Obama supporters to declare it over in May.

A friend of mine emailed me and said Camp BO is calling voters in WV, not to get out the vote but for donations. Saying the election is essentially over so it doesn't matter who they vote for they just want a donation for the GE. This is all shameless voter suppression.

That would be quite a sign of desperation! First, that they need to press their small donors -- maybe their big money donors have pulled back.

Second, that they would tell their own supporters no need to get out and vote. Unless they are really only phoning Hill supporters and the whole donation thing is just a ploy to suppress our vote ... is that what you mean?

What's hysterical is the claim that it's illegal to call people to raise money.  And also that someone who devoted his life to getting people registered to vote and has started a national voter registration project would tell people not to vote.

it's reported as a rumor, and there is no other way to check it out. He's not being condemned, my goodness what a double standard, even here Hillary rumors are reported. Over at kos they're front paged for days. I remember one at the Iowa caucus about someone seeing someone who had Clinton posters taking down Obama posters. That was such a big deal at kos that the outrage against Hillary topped like five hundred comments, and I was trolled for suggesting people not be so quick to believe it, lost my ratings for a few days cause someone thought i'd called the diarist a liar.  Funny, eh?  But if this is true, Obama's camp needs to be warned that it's highly unethical and could cost him big.

Get back to me with evidence of real voter suppression, like telling people the wrong day to vote, or giving them the wrong voting location, turning away voters with BS reasons, etc.

Not true at all.  I defend my chosen candidate against what I see as unfounded or hypocritical attacks.

But I also tell people who criticize Hillary in a disgusting fashion that I feel they have no place here.  I did so in the recent diary that showed video from some Hitler movie, and had subtitles so that Hitler said things Hillary might have said about the current election.  It was completely inappropriate, and I said so.  That's one example.  There are others.  

I don't always comment, if I feel others have done so to the point that the general disgust of the community is demonstrated.  I see a lot of Obama supporters self-policing when others of us (or trolls/Freepers posing as Obama supporters) get out of line.

So, I'm not sure what you want of me.  I'm a passionate defender of Obama's policies, so far as I agree with them.  But I've defended the Clintons on here, as well, particularly on the racism issue.  So, there you have it.  Feel free to confirm that by poring over my comments, if you wish.

A great new diary by ragecage points out that Obama has gained another 26k votes in PA, on the provisional ballots. If Hillary wins by 20 per cent in Kentucky, this is probably around the same 20-30k value.

That's not true, what you say about Kentucky.  A landslide in Kentucky with even modest turnout will give Hillary a lot of votes.  She's not predicted to win by 20%, she's predicted to win by over 30%.  The state has over 4 million people.  The electorate is split on race/class and there's not much anyone can do to stop Kentucky voting in patterns congruent with the Western Pennsylvania, Eastern Virginia and Southern Ohio counties that reflect Kentucky's demogaphy.  

Obama lost 15,000 votes in North Carolina today due to a double-count in its two most populous counties.  

With media perceptions and the like, none of this may matter, but you should be able to make your case without distorting facts.  


2004 swing state margins: PA-2%, OH-2%, IA-1%, WI-0.5%, MI-3%, FL-5%, NM-1%; Alienating 50% of the party is a luxury we can't afford.

As a resident of an adjoining state, I'm aware that KY has for many decades has more registered Dems. than Repubs, even though their two Senators and most of their Reps. are Republican.  They had a Repub. governor until the last election, when the sitting  Repub. Gov. was corrupt.

I'm sure the exact figures as easily obtainable.

That's not true.

KY is filled with disaffected registered Dems who vote for Republicans in national elections.  

From www.kentucky.com:

The influx brings the party totals to:

* 1,629,845 Democrats

* 1,040,438 Republicans

* 186,948 other voters

The 2,857,231 total voters is a Kentucky record.


2004 swing state margins: PA-2%, OH-2%, IA-1%, WI-0.5%, MI-3%, FL-5%, NM-1%; Alienating 50% of the party is a luxury we can't afford.

Are you counting the double count in NC? (none / 0)

Are yuou accounting for the early voting being counted double for Obama in Mecklenburg and Wake counties, so far?  That amounted to over 50,000 votes he didn't get and they are checking other counties.  They added the early votes in with the precincts and then added them again on top of the county totals in urbam counties where Obama won.

I have read many a retarded post on this website. However, this one may take the cake. It even tops alegre for sheer obfuscation. Here is the text of an e-mail I got today from the Obama campaign:

And another thing, voter suppression is when you try to bring down the opposition's vote totals.  Where in that email does it even HINT at targeting Clinton voters?  At worst, Obama isn't focusing on bringing out his own voters, but that hardly helps him, does it?

the "voter supression piece" is the insisting the "race is over" when its not.  This is unfortunately a common Obama campaign tactic.

And the nerve of asking people for money when he is not in the state campaiging, when he knows he will lose by 30 points or more.

I hope this backfires on him, and certainly this kind of stuff, and the more egregious examples of intimidation and misinformation, can be presented to the supers as they weigh their choices.

Honestly, we have read in thread after thread after thread how much you hate Obama and how you can't bring yourself to vote for him.  We know.  Why don't you start commenting on something more positive or look into helping down ticket candidates.  Because pushing vitriol towards our presumptive nominee does not help the democratic party, and if you believe the things most democrats believe, does not help the country.

Seems to me with all this "Obama has won the nomination" press, and Rasmussen not even caring to poll the Democratic race anymore, why do all the Obama supporters have their shorts riding up their asses?  There are a LOT of pissed off people here, hurling insults at everybody and everything.  The last time I checked Hillary Clinton was still running for President, and until she says anything different, her supporters are sticking with her.  Please deal with that.

Bill really, really doesn't want to leave the campaign trail. And people do want to see him when he comes to their small towns.  But it didn't help Hillary that much in NC, no?

to say that the 3 a.m. ad appealed to me as a Mom.  I know that in our household I've always been the person up late at night checking on our kids.  I'm willing to bet that most Moms are the ones up at 3 a.m. whether they're sewing costumes for a school play, taking care of feverish kids, or having menopausal hot flashes.  I am still unsure why the 3 a.m. cuased such an uproar.  I'd would love to have a dialogue (reasonable, and not angry) about how men perceived that ad, and why some people were really angered by it.

First Obama never asks for more than $100. I have been an Obama supporter for a long time and I have never gotten a call for a donation. My sense this is a third party scam for money.

And rather than telling us about contact your secretary of state a inform them.

I  am also highly suspect of third hand info off of email list around election time.

But again have your friends contact the secretary of state it should be investigated

alegre at least has the history to back up her being a committed Democratic activist, though I may disagree with her posts.  However, hanging out here with so many obvious Republican trolls has led to an atmosphere where Clinton supporters will believe just about anything about Obama.  It's not healthy.

And while I cannot say openly who I feel is a Repblican plant because it would be taken as an attack on another user, I can merely point you in the right direction, and let you make up your own mind whether that person is a real Democrat.
