Voter Suppression in W. Virginia? [Updated]

While it's understandable that Barack Obama would like to minimize Hillary Clinton's popular vote gain in upcoming primaries, I would assume that he'd do so by advertising and campaigning in the states to turn out his own vote.  And not like this...I truly hope that his campaign has not stooped this low.

I just received this via an e-mail list, and I would like to know from Senator Obama whether it is true:

Could you pass some info on to the rest of the callers that are calling into WV?

I've been talking with some people already on the ground in WV and the Obama camp is calling voters, NOT to get out the vote, but to ask for money - campaign donations. The gist of the call is that its not important that they vote, because the election is over, and then they ask for money to help put this primary campaign to an end and move on to the general election. Basically, they are telling voters its over. Then they ask for $400 donations...

And here is my open message to Barack Obama...

Senator Obama:

What is going on?  Is your campaign instructing staff and volunteers to urge the citizens of West Virginia to stay home, and not to vote?  I hope not, because that would be a serious obstruction of democracy.  As you know, in a democracy citizens should be encouraged to participate in elections.  You yourself have expressed pride in registering new voters and engaging people in the democratic process.

I implore you to immediately issue a cease-and-desist instruction to your campaign staff and volunteers for this kind of activity.

Sincerely,
Concerned Citizen/Voter

UPDATE: Based on comments, I want to explain, for those who are not involved in phone-banking for either candidate, that the calling lists always include supporters or leaners for both candidates and, crucially, undecided voters. Any Obama volunteer who has made more than a few calls would know this.

From the people who brought you this diary (2.00 / 2)

comes....

Sen. Obama's Gay Killin Pastor

brought to you by Sisterdo

Enjoy.

---------------------------------------- ---------
Is Obama's church killing gay people?

I heard something from Christopher Hitchens (posted here, b/c I can't take the media anymore, but you great people can and bring me the good stuff).

Hitchens-- you know him, writes for Vanity Fair, English, fat, drunk, mean, hates God, was and still is for Iraq, was a Marxist historian and I don't know what he is now-- but I think he's still a self-described Marxist.

Anyway, he can be wrong, he's always a pain, but he NEVER lies. He's the first real person who I heard say Obama had a racist church. Then I knew it really was separatist and crazy.

Hitchens is a horrible, mean creature but he would never lie about this.

This week, Hitchens as an Oxford trained historian said Farrakhan admitted to having Malcolm X killed. Terrible right? Farrakhan had Malcolm X executed by his church because of an internal fight-- and he said he was "policing his own." As I said, if horrible Hitchens said it, it's evidently true even though I don't like the guy too much.

Well.......DID REVEREND WRIGHT DO A FARRAKHAN on his own gay members? What's going on? I can't keep up.

Re: Your comment is out of bounds. You (2.00 / 3)

Don't even try it. This "you're not helping Obama" stuff is pathetic. Trying to hold me hostage with empty threats is sad.

I respect decent and well meaning supporters of Hillary Clinton who work hard for her and spin even harder.  canadian gal made a gem of a diary and I salute her on it. I know to separate the good from the bad.

I stand by my statement and double down. These people are lowlifes who have taken upon themselves to discredit not only Barack Obama but also Hillary Clinton supporters who have the very best intentions at heart. The "spam the Super D's fiasco" was the most pathetic and absurd thing I have seen this primary season.

This diary is a piece of manure and the people who rec it are just as bad as the person who wrote it. Take a stroll in Texas Darlin's blog and have a look at the hate and filth this person waddles in.

When you come back, tell me if you share her views.

I'll await your response.

What is it about Senator Obama...? (none / 0)

What is it about Senator Obama that inspires and attracts and frees people who choose him to behave with such mean-spirited arrogance and aggression?
If the rules of civility go first and then reasoned discourse and then any notion of equal value and equal voice, then we should be ...what? Enticed to join them? Convinced to trust him to manage the Free World?

Judging from the way he treats Hillary , the primary proccess and voters and looking at the actions of so many of his supporters, you couldn't safely put Senator Obama in charge of a schoolyard at recess.

Re: What is it about Senator Obama...? (2.00 / 2)

The primary process? You're gonna seriously discuss who treated the "primary process" with greater respect? Or the voters?

You're gonna seriously argue that Hillary Clinton respected all that, and Obama didn't?

Hillary Clinton, the person whose campaign has so far dismissed:

  • young people as Kool-Aid drinkers
  • liberals as latte-sippers
  • African-Americans as uninteresting bloc-voters
  • caucus-goers as undemocratic
  • red-staters as irrelevant?

And Hillary Clinton so respects the process:

  • she counts the SDs... except when she starts losing them at which point they should only be counted in Denver, not before
  • she agrees not to participate in Michigan and then she goes to participate. She said that the votes won't count there, and then argues that they do.
  • she says that the process would be over by February, but now it's the height of arrogance from Obama supporters to declare it over in May.

That would be quite a sign of desperation! First, that they need to press their small donors -- maybe their big money donors have pulled back.

Second, that they would tell their own supporters no need to get out and vote. Unless they are really only phoning Hill supporters and the whole donation thing is just a ploy to suppress our vote ... is that what you mean?

Exactly!  You hit the nail right on the head.

If it is true it should be easy to document.

The problem is, that it's even easier to post an unsubstantiated allegation without bothering to find out if it's true or false.  And then, if it does prove to be false, to vanish without acknowledging it, and then move on to the next unsubstantiated allegation.

Re: Interesting how all the diaries and diarists y (2.00 / 3)

Not true at all.  I defend my chosen candidate against what I see as unfounded or hypocritical attacks.

But I also tell people who criticize Hillary in a disgusting fashion that I feel they have no place here.  I did so in the recent diary that showed video from some Hitler movie, and had subtitles so that Hitler said things Hillary might have said about the current election.  It was completely inappropriate, and I said so.  That's one example.  There are others.

I don't always comment, if I feel others have done so to the point that the general disgust of the community is demonstrated.  I see a lot of Obama supporters self-policing when others of us (or trolls/Freepers posing as Obama supporters) get out of line.

So, I'm not sure what you want of me.  I'm a passionate defender of Obama's policies, so far as I agree with them.  But I've defended the Clintons on here, as well, particularly on the racism issue.  So, there you have it.  Feel free to confirm that by poring over my comments, if you wish.

Re: Voter Suppression in W. Virginia? (2.00 / 2)

A great new diary by ragecage points out that Obama has gained another 26k votes in PA, on the provisional ballots. If Hillary wins by 20 per cent in Kentucky, this is probably around the same 20-30k value.

http://www.mydd.com/story/2008/5/9/20244 4/9806

I'm not buying the voter suppression argument, and everyone ought to be aware that the Kentucky vote, even if it's a landslide, will barely change the updated popular vote.

by duende on Fri May 09, 2008 at 08:36:28 PM EST

Re: Voter Suppression in W. Virginia? (2.00 / 2)

That's not true, what you say about Kentucky.  A landslide in Kentucky with even modest turnout will give Hillary a lot of votes.  She's not predicted to win by 20%, she's predicted to win by over 30%.  The state has over 4 million people.  The electorate is split on race/class and there's not much anyone can do to stop Kentucky voting in patterns congruent with the Western Pennsylvania, Eastern Virginia and Southern Ohio counties that reflect Kentucky's demogaphy.

Obama lost 15,000 votes in North Carolina today due to a double-count in its two most populous counties.

With media perceptions and the like, none of this may matter, but you should be able to make your case without distorting facts.

Are yuou accounting for the early voting being counted double for Obama in Mecklenburg and Wake counties, so far?  That amounted to over 50,000 votes he didn't get and they are checking other counties.  They added the early votes in with the precincts and then added them again on top of the county totals in urbam counties where Obama won.

Re: Voter Suppression in W. Virginia? (2.00 / 13)

I have read many a retarded post on this website. However, this one may take the cake. It even tops alegre for sheer obfuscation. Here is the text of an e-mail I got today from the Obama campaign:

"The West Virginia primary is coming up on Tuesday, May 13th, and we have an opportunity to secure some of the final available delegates and move a big step closer to the nomination.

We can't do this without your help -- and you can make a difference right from your home.

Our team has put together a list of the potential supporters here in West Virginia whom we most need to reach by Tuesday. Your voice could persuade them to cast their votes for Barack -- but only if you use our simple online tool right now and give them a call. "

Yeah, can't you just smell the voter suppression?

And another thing, voter suppression is when you try to bring down the opposition's vote totals.  Where in that email does it even HINT at targeting Clinton voters?  At worst, Obama isn't focusing on bringing out his own voters, but that hardly helps him, does it?

what gall (1.40 / 5)

the "voter supression piece" is the insisting the "race is over" when its not.  This is unfortunately a common Obama campaign tactic.

And the nerve of asking people for money when he is not in the state campaiging, when he knows he will lose by 30 points or more.

I hope this backfires on him, and certainly this kind of stuff, and the more egregious examples of intimidation and misinformation, can be presented to the supers as they weigh their choices.

Bill really, really doesn't want to leave the campaign trail. And people do want to see him when he comes to their small towns.  But it didn't help Hillary that much in NC, no?

And here's some reports from West Virginia;

While the crowd gave Clinton an extremely warm welcome, many in the crowd seemed to lose interest as he began his speech -- even during his appeal for a high voter turnout.

During the course of Clinton's hour long speech, many people wandered out but those that did stay listened intently to Clinton discuss his wife's energy and education plans for America.

Re: Voter Suppression in W. Virginia? [Updated] (2.00 / 4)

Probably the most bizarre part of this e-mail is the idea that Obama voters would tell people they didn't need to vote.  This is the campaign that has been brilliant at organizing voters and getting them to vote. Obama got his start in politics doing a voter registration project. So now they would just give that up?

BTW, in my little swing state, tomorrow -- almost six months before the election -- two paid Obama staff will be initiating a voter registration drive in the area.

Yep, these folks fit the profile of those who don't want people to vote.

And what's with the ask of $400 freakin' bucks?  Who gives $400? (Not me. I don't own a silver BMW nor have a $350/hour accountant like a certain someone.)

I read this story and contacted my friend who travels with the campaign, and is IN FACT in WV putting boots on the ground, etc.

This story, if true at all, has NOTHING to do with Obama.  His campaign has moved into an entirely new direction. While they are trying to put enough resources in the state to demonstrate intrest and assure that his people go to the polls, NO ONE has spent the sort of resources there to do what TDs sources indicate.

The long and short is that Obama has moved to the GE, and his inner circle is ceding WV and KY, focusing on OR to put the nomination to rest.

Whoever is selling you this koolaid TD, is doing so BADLY.  I would be careful not to sully yourself by repeating spurrious poo.

Re: Voter Suppression in W. Virginia? [Updated] (2.00 / 3)

It's a good sign that this is the only insanity/unsubstantiated-rumor/innuendo/ fact-challenged/obama-hit-piece diary on the rec list right now, but that's still one too many.

It's time to bring back MyDD from the brink and STOP rec'ing this crap.

The Hillaryis44/TaylorMarsh trolls do all the rec'ing.

It would be easy to weed out this scum by following the trail.

I thought this diary was so funny, I rec'd it. I don't regret it.

I love the transformative power (2.00 / 2)

of humor. Or desperation. It can turn a seemingly serious political site into a parody of itself.

Funny how only the Clinton (2.00 / 1)

supporters have heard of this.  Why wouldn't the Obama campaign be contacting his own supporters?

I for one am not stupid enough to believe this nonsense.

Re: Voter Suppression in W. Virginia? [Updated] (2.00 / 1)

This hit piece is a joke.  Kindly accept my middle finger as a sign of disapproval.  What do you have lined up for tomorrow texasdarlin?  Is Obama going to buy a weird vegetable at the supermarket? Are you going to get a mysterious email that asks if Obama is eating babies? Is Hillary going to inherit the power of a god and alter space and time to get enough delegates to win the election?  Is Hillary going to 'righteously' fight to kneecap Senator Obama and so she can run again in 2012?

Seriously, this is the kind of crap I expect to hear out of jerks like Sean Hannity.  When did MyDD become the Faux News of the Clinton Camp and when did Texasdarlin become bizzaro Limbaugh?

TexasDarlin please write better diaries come on you are better then this. Many Clinton supporters broke nails trying to get you back from being banned please do not make us go through that again. We need you, but come on you are better then this. I do not want to lose you! I need your diaries! It would take a starve in next time to get you back and I do not know if I can resist that bowl of ice cream for that long.

"Heard from a friend of a friend" (none / 0)

This diary is pretty much the definition of urban legend.

It's also paranoid and unintentionally hilarious (in which fundraising becomes voter suppression).

Obama leads the popular vote too

Re: Voter Suppression in W. Virginia? [Updated] (2.00 / 1)

If this is true and I am not saying it is it shows a lack of understanding of the demographics of the state. WV is one of the poorest in the union. I can't believe they have the nerve to ask someone for $400. I guess when you drive a hybrid and can afford to pay $5 for a cup of coffee $400 is not that much.

Re: Voter Suppression in W. Virginia? [Updated] (none / 0)

Of course they wouldn't ask for $400. That by itself shows show absurd the story is.

Re: Voter Suppression in W. Virginia? [Updated] (2.00 / 1)

I wander into Democratic blogs and websites periodically, and just came back to MyDD after several months and I'm finding it really fascinating.  Over the last week I've been obsessively reading diaries and comment threads, and it seriously seems like a different universe in here.  I live in a blue state, have many friends and colleagues supporting both Obama and Clinton (I myself started with Edwards, now Obama) and never have I encountered the level of vitriol, shameless rumor-mongering and childishness that appears to be standard operating procedure here.  Really, it seems like a totally different blog than I remember it being.  And a lot of the nastiness is from both sides.

I think the echo chamber effect here is worthy of a PhD thesis.  This diary is laughable, as many have said.  Seriously, could any rational person envision such a competently run, effective campaign as Obama's asking for $400 over the phone from random people in one of the poorest states in the country?  Seriously?  Maybe I'm just incapable of understanding the true venality and idiocy and incompetence and arrogance of the Obama campaign because I'm a college-educated person from a caucus state who has betrayed my gender and race by voting for Obama.

Re: Voter Suppression in W. Virginia? [Updated] (none / 0)

This diarist is very very bias in their postings so much credibility is lost.

Stop spreading rumors, please, for the party's sake.

If you can't post a diary to unify the party, please don't post it here.

Clinton already has toned down her rhetoric, so please take a cue from the person you allegedly support.

I use the word allegedly because I'm beginning to think you are a republican troll.  If you truly are a Democrat, can you post something positive that will unify rather than divide the two camps?  This is my challenge to you Texasdarlin.  Prove yourself a true Democrat and take my challenge.

Re: Voter Suppression in W. Virginia? [Updated] (none / 0)

Look, there have documented, questionable practices during this primary (and I think you know what I am referring to) The fact that Texas put this out there makes sense to me. If it inspires people to look for evidence or lack of evidence, so be it. I fear too much went on with no questioning and no scrutiny. And about those things people are starting to wish they had spoken up sooner. Texas, you do a great job...this issue demands some thought and investigation.
