How HRC can win Oregon

This diary is written in support of HRC's continued efforts to campaign across America, specifically Oregon.  While I am aware of the large lead Obama has, it is not out of the question that the margin can be drastically reduced. It will be a winning strategy for HRC to reduce or eliminate this margin, which O has right now precisely because he hasn't been specific.

Oregon is a wonderful state; most of the "blue" from Oregon comes from the western urban areas of Oregon--from Portland to Eugene.  The central and eastern part of the state is about as red as you can get, with the exception of Indian Tribes who often vote for the democrat.

I have seen Obama's "oregon plan", which as everyone knows made the embarassing mistake of placing the Great Lakes in oregon, and proposing changes that have already been in place in ORegon for several years.

What Obama misses entirely is the detail of the critically intertwined issues of environment, economic development, treaty rights, salmon, irrigation and hydropower that form the context of reaching out to Oregon.  I think Obama's strategy is to rev up the masses without much subtance.

Because Obama doesn't plan to debate in Oregon, this provides a perfect opportunity to raise some serious questions for him that he won't be able to answer with sound bites or a large rally.  By strategically placing these issues in front of voters, I think the shine will begin to wear off Obama.

Here are the key questions:

1.  What is Obama's position on dam removal on the Columbia River?

2.  What is Obama's position on treaty rights of the Tribes to salmon?

3.  How will Obama reconcile the Endangered Species Act with land use practices in Oregon, Tribal treaty rights, and the environment?

4. What does Obama think about the water crisis in Oregon?

5. What is Obama's approach to federal agency regulation (i.e., REclamation) and requiring the federal agencies to follow the law in water delivery, respecting all water rights including the Tribes?

6.  Does Obama support more hatcheries to deal with dwindling salmon populations?

7.  What does Obama think about agriculture dewatering of streams and aquifers?

If he can answer these, all power to him.

Clinton has this kind of experience in the Pacific northwest, and understands this interplay between agencies, natural resources, Tribes, and treaty rights.  Given this set of questions, Clinton will know the pitfalls, and what answer pits who against who. Of course I'm not giving any answers here, as if Obama wants it, he can figure it out.

Poll
What is the most serious issue Obama faces in Oregon?
irrigators in eastern oregon
tribal treaty rights to fish and water
the "dead zone" off the coast of Oregon
the interplay between science, government, and economic development
dam removal on the Columbia River
no problems, he's got it locked up

These are extremely good questions (2.00 / 1)

for any candidate and they should be answered by Obama- somehow I don't see it happening, you are far more optimistic than I am. Did you see his cut and paste plan for Oregon?

Sure, they should be answered. Has Hillary answered them?

Quite a few of them (2.00 / 1)

Oh, (2.00 / 1)

you mean The Obama plan that he cribbed off of Clinton after his cut and paste job didn't quite... cut it?  Well, when you xerox its hard not to get an exact copy.

Thank you for refusing to answer my question.

I'm not sure who published their plan first, and I don't think I can help with your perpetual suspicion of any Obama policies.

Re: These are extremely good questions (2.00 / 1)

All politics are local!

1) Actually I kind of dig the local flair to the questions and wouldn't mind seeing them.  I always wondered what the specifics were on the 35w bridge and what was being done on the Iron Range in MN when we were voting on Super Tuesday.

2) That copy and paste was a pretty laughable eff up.  From a campaign that has been ran as well as this one has it was kind of doubly embarassing and I am sure it cost him a few votes.

Re: How HRC can win Oregon (2.00 / 1)

Hillary has no support in Oregon, especially after what her husbands logging policies did to the oregon economy.

as is, tribal water rights have already been decided by the supreme court, at least along the klamath river

by theninjagoddess on Fri May 09, 2008 at 03:12:19 PM EST

sorry, naive (1.00 / 1)

the logging policies and spotted owl were hugely favored by the same demographic Obama wants to win.  And the economic impacts of logging are addressed through federal in-lieu payments to counties impacted by this.  And no, water rights have not been decided by the Supreme Court here....and the Klamath basin saw the bush administration kill 60,000 treaty-protected fish to protect agriculture.

Regarding Indian rights, Clinton has been on the ground here for a much longer time.

Oregon is a great state. Portland is one of my fave cities.
Great transport system.

Oregon is not going to go for HRC. No way.

Here is how (2.00 / 1)

Step one: steal underwear
Step Two: ???
Step Three: Profit
Step Four: Use profits to pay for more advertising

/snark off

Seriously, if she goes and camps out there campaigning until the 16th she might have a shot, but she will focus on WV and KY to push up her margins there instead.

How Hillary can win (1.66 / 3)

By stealing all the mail-in ballots cast in the Portland area. That is her only hope.

Re: How Hillary can win (none / 0)

She would lose even worse then, as the SUSA poll has him doing even better in the rest of the state than he does in Portland.

Re: How HRC can win Oregon (2.00 / 2)

Your post seems to imply that Clinton can win Oregon by simply asking Obama a series of questions relating to water rights and the environment. If these issues are as central to turning Oregon in to a big win for her, would it not be better to have Clinton push her plans for dealing with these issues?

by Clancy on Fri May 09, 2008 at 03:22:16 PM EST

Re: How HRC can win Oregon (2.00 / 2)

Obama is doing small townhalls and meetings in OR and is being asked questions. You can bet people are asking about these issues. You can also bet he is ready for those questions. I'm not concerned. He won't debate because there is no reason to legitimize HRC any further.

by Becky G on Fri May 09, 2008 at 03:45:19 PM EST

prepared for these questions? (none / 0)

I don't think so, not from his "Oregon Plan", not from his website, and not from his remarks.  Oh yes, he doesn't want to debate HRC, and give Oregonians the benefit of a debate,  but that doesn't mean he won't have to answer these questions.

Stick with the "Messiah" label, stefystef, the reference to kings and crownings is a reference to dynastic rules ala Bush+Clinton.

Re: How HRC can win Oregon (2.00 / 1)

Thanks for the good laugh.  While the issues you raise are certainly important to Oregonians, it doesn't actually matter if she wins the Oregon primary.  It's a delegate marathon, not a state marathon.  She's too far behind to catch up.  Obama would have to only get 5-10 delegates in each contest for her to catch up.

And the Oregon primary is a mail in primary.  They're actually voting right now.

I would also ask you to ask those questions of the Clinton campaign if they mean so much to you.

by The Distillery on Fri May 09, 2008 at 03:49:41 PM EST

If that doesn't work... (none / 0)

She could try repeating her winning strategy of connecting with the locals.

You know, do a shot of wheat grass at the juice bar, talk about her memories of growing up playing ultimate frisbee, etc.

Hey, it worked in Pennsylvania!

sen. clinton will not win oregon (none / 0)

i would be surprised if she lost by less than 10% (55-45).  s.

Re: How HRC can win Oregon (2.00 / 1)

We are strange folk up here in the PNW?

I gather most folks pushing this meme that out of no where Clinton pulls an upset in OR have probably never lived here or know the poltics?

I never saw Obama winning in Penn or In (though he came close)

He will get crushed in WV and KY?

But, put OR in the bank for the nominee by 10 or more (and, we know who the nominee is, now don't we?)

Send this to the campaign! (2.00 / 1)

I noticed onn some demographic polling that Hillary is often behind BO among environmentalists.  This seems crazy to me. He is the big Nuclear Industry guy, helping them out at every turn and he voted for Cheney's Energy Bill!  He seems to not kknow any of the local environmental struggles or tribal efforts in the West and Hillary is well versed and supportive.  ONce again another group votes against its' interests and doesn't notice till it is too late.

Hillary - tell about your environmental issues and initiatives.

BO's great friendship with coal interests should be at issue, too.  Will nobody look at his State Senate record?  How can a liberal vote for BO if in the know about what he has done?
