Cindy McCain Says She Won't Release Her Tax Returns. Ever.

Chutzpah:

Cindy McCain says she will never make her tax returns public even if her husband wins the White House and she becomes the first lady.

"You know, my husband and I have been married 28 years and we have filed separate tax returns for 28 years. This is a privacy issue. My husband is the candidate," Cindy McCain, wife of Republican presidential nominee-in-waiting John McCain, said in an interview aired on NBC's "Today" on Thursday.

Asked if she would release her tax returns if she was first lady, Cindy McCain said: "No."

I believe Cindy McCain's tax returns ceased being a private issue right around the time when she kept her husband's presidential campaign alive with heavily discounted use of her own corporate jet - a practice that exploited a campaign finance law loophole and saved the campaign hundreds of thousands of dollars, if not more.

She says her "husband is the candidate." But remember - last summer, McCain's candidacy was money-poor and fading. If not for the help of Cindy's vast, undisclosed wealth, John McCain might not have gone on to become his party's nominee.

Re: Cindy McCain Says She Won't Release Her Tax Re (2.00 / 2)

He basically keeps all the assets in her name.  Since he's a career politician, the motive is pretty obvious.

This is an issue, but it is very, very important to frame it properly.  This is not about digging into the candidate's wife's assets; it is about investigating McCain's assets that he takes great pains to conceal under his wife's name.

If we let the debate get framed as the right to invade the privacy of the candidate's spouse, there is no way we win that one.

As you can start to gather from the comments, poor framing is managing to lose this issue even among progressives.

Agreed - Framing the question is key (2.00 / 1)

Good for her.

She's not running and that's and end of it.

Now, he has to reveal all and if he's getting money from her well...that will show up.

Re: Cindy McCain Says She Won't Release Her Tax Re (2.00 / 1)

Whaa?

You also realize it goes the other way as well.  He's hiding his money in her accounts.

I don't see why the McCains get a special exception to the Kerry rule.

Way to go Cindy, keep doing all you can to unify the Democrats!

Re: Cindy McCain (none / 0)

I don't have a problem with Cindy's position. I think the whole tax return thing is over blown.

Also, fyi, not sure it's very PC to use the term shiksa. Most dictionaries include an unfavorable definition. We're Democrats, let's not get into religion bashing.

Honestly? (none / 0)

I don't care.

We shouldn't be part of this snooping through personal lives and looking for petty scandal. Not only is it small-minded, it gives license to the Republicans to do what they do best, which is to drag up little things and make a huge deal about it.

If I never hear about another candidate's tax returns again it will be too soon. Unless there's some reason to believe there's impropriety, then I'm not interested.

Being Rich Matters (2.00 / 1)

You gotta be kidding me. This woman has hundreds of millions of dollars from an inherited beer distribution business and has funded McCain's political life from the start and people here are treating it as if she is just another private citizen of the United States? This goes down to the very core of the corruptive influence of money in politics.

McCain uses her corporate jet to fly around in but gets to account it as a "first class ticket" because that is the way he wrote it in McCain-Feingold. Anyone here doesn't think he was thinking ahead? Anyone here doesn't think that the McCain family has and will continue to benefit financially from his ass being in a seat of power?

She needs to release them now and stop pretending that she just happens to have a 9 figure business on the side. Some of you guys must be really naive to think this doesn't matter. Either that or you want McCain to win in November.

Returns. Ever. (none / 0)

She was rich before she met him, he signed a pre-nup, and they file separate tax returns - I don't think she should have to release her returns.  If it is found unethical that she provided airline service to his campaign, his campaign should have to pay her the amount back, plus fines.  That seems fair.
All three candidates are rich, just by different degrees - I don't think this will be a huge issue.

Re: Who cares. (none / 0)

This is a non issue. I respect and have no problem
with her decision. What are we going to find that she  supplied Bill Ayers with a lifetime supply of Coors light? Or that  Reverand Wright said God Damn AmeriKKKA but thank you Cindy for the new wing on my golf course house. Geez.

Re: Cindy McCain (2.00 / 1)

No only has she provided her husband with freebies or favors in this campaign, but she has done it in the past too.  How do you suppose McCain, in his 1982 Congressional campaign, lent himself almsot $170,000 on a $31,000 Navy pension?

IOKIYAR indeed

Re: whats with ANYONE (none / 0)

This is all about the Publics right to know. If the Media as well as the right wingnuts could and did demand to see Kerry's wife's tax returns then "Whats good for the goose is good for the gander". That's why.

What is he hiding in her tax returns? (2.00 / 1)

I does matter. This is not a personal privacy issue. It ceased to be the moment she started using her assets for his election.

Remember LBJ? He always claimed his wife was the wealthy one in the family. The press bought it and accepted it at face value.

But as his recent biographers have shown, LBJ put many of his assets (e.g., radio stations) in Lady Bird's name specifically to hide corrupt dealings. His assets -- in her name -- became a convenient way to funnel ill-gotten gains and bribes.

Is John McCain also using her to hide his own gains?  I don't necessarily think so, but if he's Mr. Straight Talk, then what does he have to hide?

She probably doesn't want us all to know about her tax shelters. That alone would become an issue.

Cindy McCain Better Release Her Tax Retrn (2.00 / 1)

Kerry's, Obama's, Bushbag's and Clinton's spouses all released theirs. We should make a really big stink until we find out exactly what McCains wife is hiding!

Cindy will be a public official as first lady. (2.00 / 1)

She will hold a tax-payer funded office.  She should release returns.
