Charleston Daily Mail Endorses Clinton

We all know that Hillary is going to win in a landslide in West Virginia, but today she received the endorsement of the Charleston, West Virginia Newspaper. Even in the midst of a media blitz for Clinton to "get out", she continues to receive important endorsements. Text follows:

ENDORSEMENT OF HILLARY CLINTON
A Yale-educated lawyer, a former congressional staffer and former first lady of Arkansas, Hillary Clinton stumbled awkwardly onto the national stage. The Clintons, it was said, did not know the ways of Washington.

She was ridiculed for fashion choices at her husband's inaugural in 1992. She was excoriated for trying to bypass Congress and make health care policy herself.

But Hillary's history is that she keeps going, as she has during this primary campaign.

This trait has produced a broad, deep background in policy. She has been an activist for children, migrant laborers, civil rights, higher standards in education, the Children's Health Insurance Program and more.

She won a U.S. Senate seat in New York in 2000 and was re-elected by a larger margin in 2006. No one questions her readiness for Washington any more.

Now Hillary would be president, and Bill would be not baking the cookies or pouring the tea. Some Americans can't countenance the prospect of another Clinton co-presidency.

Either Democrat will have a tough time this fall  against Republican John McCain, whose service, policy experience and bipartisan accomplishments trump Hillary's.

Of the Democrats, though, Hillary would be the stronger candidate.

The Charleston Daily Mail

A WEST VIRGINIA WELCOME

Re: Charleston Daily Mail Endorses Clinton (2.00 / 0)

The funniest part to me is how the media went from "she has a very legit shot," to "impossible" in a single day, when the vote wasn't far off what anyone was expecting...

by Falsehood on Thu May 08, 2008 at 05:11:09 PM EST

Same thing happened in Pennsylvania (none / 0)

Everyone knew that Clinton would win with decent margins in PA, and yet everyone was shocked, shocked I tell you! ...when she did exactly what just about everyone predicted.

Suddenly Obama was on the ropes, despite having an unsurmountable delegate lead.

The media made Clinton's chances seem bigger than they were; in the end, it destroyed her hopes, too.  I guess you could call that media bias.

Surprise surprise (2.00 / 1)

A Republican newspaper endorses Clinton.  I'm shocked.

Surprise surprise (2.00 / 1)

An Obama supporter goes out of their way to drop an insult in a diary written by a Hillary supporter that dosen't say a single negative thing about your candidate.

Ironically, though, (none / 0)

the diary does have negative things to say about Clinton (or, at least, the endorsement in the diary).

I'm providing a service (2.00 / 1)

Some might not know that it is a Republican newspaper.

SOME Clinton supporters are very concerned with right-wing operatives such as Scaife, Limbaugh, O'Reilly, and Coulter attempting to game the system out of fake respect or even bald-faced antagonism.

Clinton supporters have a right to know who is endorsing their candidate so they can gauge for themselves the motivations.

That endorsement was hardly glowing, basically: "Democrats are still going to lose, but for what it's worth, we'd rather see Clinton in the general."

I'm fine with sincere endorsements, even from Republicans... but that one is barely worth the paper it's printed on.

Exactly (none / 0)

Endorsements come down to judgment.

If this newspaper has the poor judgment to believe McCain is better than Clinton, why put any stock in their belief that Clinton is better than Obama?

I would just as quickly dismiss an Obama endorsement that was framed as "McCain is better than both, but of THOSE two..."  It's absurd to be proud of that "endorsement."

Re: Surprise surprise (2.00 / 1)

LOL-Have you ever known an Obama supporter that didn't try to be intimidating or insulting to Clinton Supporters. P.S. They also like to cry and complain when things don't go according to plans, we call that an Obama temper tantrum. The 40% lead by Hillary is phenomenal and even better than what Rasmussen is showing today. Kentucky and West Virginia are two more states that Obama will lose in November if he gets the nomination.

Wow, what a scummy thing to say. Someone points out that the paper praises McCain above both of them, and you lash out like you're wounded.

Why be happy with this? (none / 0)

It's funny --- endorsements matter only as far as you give credibility to the source.  The endorsement of anything by someone of poor judgment is an endorsement to be dismissed.

So here we have a newspaper that PRAISES McCain's superior "service, policy experience and bipartisan accomplishments."

This newspaper, in essense, puts down Clinton in comparison to the obviously inferior McCain.  And you're going to be psyched about this endorsement?

Like I said: Funny.

by Slim Tyranny on Thu May 08, 2008 at 05:18:27 PM EST

Re: Why be happy with this? (2.00 / 1)

Rasmussen also has Clinton beating McCain in the GE in WV by 62% to 24%. That is very convincing. The paper puts down Obama ever more than Clinton, even so they say she is a better candidate than Obama. So lets make that perfectly clear shall we.

Ha (none / 0)

So you EMBRACE the newspaper's judgment that Clinton is better than Obama, but you REJECT its judgment that McCain is better than Clinton?

So why listen to them at all, if their ultimate, baseline presidential opinion is total BS?

Re: Charleston Daily Mail Endorses Clinton (2.00 / 1)

That is what I have been finding amazing all along, is the continueing large crowds, the rising poll numbers, and the fact that she is not losing very much support even though the campaign is supposed to be over and the nominee decided.  Ordinarily in primaries as early as Iowa and NH, there is an obvious winner and the democrats start to go strong for the "front runner", while the votes and numbers go down in the following several primaries for the other candidates.  This time it seems to be the opposite.

Looking on realclearpolitics just now, it shows that Hillary is still going strong winning over McCain in a much stronger vote than Obama gets in swing states.  It is truly bizarre.  Up 40 percent in WV, too, in the newest poll.  The country seems to want Clinton as much and more than Obama.  What a screwed up election.

Re: Charleston Daily Mail Endorses Clinton (2.00 / 1)

It is really uncanny. I believe there is a backlash going on with voters, the way the media have treated Hillary the past couple of days and claiming that  her win in Indiana is meaningless and insignificant. The more they beat Hillary into the dirt, the more she rises from the ashes and the more her supporters admire her. These undecided superdelegates, most of which are politicians or elected officials are just as bad as the media. They sit on the fence and let the two of them bloody one another, and then most of them tell the media they are going to wait it out until after June 3 to see what happens. Only their self interests at heart. Most of them could really care less who wins. Politics is a game played at the expense of the voters and those who work for a living.

I can't wait till she challenges him in 2012 (none / 0)

when his failed health care attempt and Jimmy Carter foreign policy have failed, that Hillary does what Ronald Reagan and Ted Kennedy never could: take the nomination for the incumbent. She could definitely run and keep the Dems in the White House. I only want Obama to win 2008 because he won't be as bad as Mccain/Bush and the GOP, and so its easier for Hillary to become President, as I know Obama isn't a political heavyweight, and he just benefits from media and playing the race card. If she challenged him, she'd already have her 2008 base, and she'd have little competition. She'd have the "I told you so" factor. She would be better than Kennedy was in 1980 because she hasn't driven anyone off a bridge so far.

She's got a group of hardcore supporters who aren't going away.  The same would happen if she was ahead an Obama was behind.

This really is a historic election - this isn't one white guy against another white guy.  People feel like they have a personal stake in the candidacies.

Re: Charleston Daily Mail Endorses Clinton (none / 0)

then so are the people who think Obama can win the general election. He is going to get blown out. Latte elites and college kids alone is the McGovern/Eagleton/Muskie coalition. He might as well be the reincarnation if whites, post Wright, who in the general make up much more of the electorate, are not going to stand for a radical who insults "typical" white people, gun owners, and religious people. If he can't do well with whites in the Democratic primary, and whites are the swing vote in the general and far bigger in proprtion, he is going to do even worse with the more moderate and conservative whites who don't vote in the liberal Democratic primary. he's looking at 200 electoral votes at best.

Re: Charleston Daily Mail Endorses Clinton (none / 0)

I don't believe he will even get to 200. It will be more like the 177 or so that Humphrey got in 68. These folks are living in fantasy land, so best to let them have their very short celebration, because next week and the week after Obama is going to be blown away with a huge voter backlash against the media and the democratic elite who have demanded she get out.

Re: Charleston Daily Mail Endorses Clinton (none / 0)

play around with http://www.270towin.com/ and I just know his media and racial shield won't protect him from the voters, as McCain is strong in the Midwest, and Dem primary voters alone don't win anything, i can see him losing Michigan, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, and maybe adding Iowa on from 2004. this election may not just be a loss, but because it symbolizes such political correctness, bring us back to where we were in 1984 before Bill Clinton actually made us palatable again. We'll be set back 25 years
