Stop acting 'Nice' with Hillary Supporters

Call me a cynic, but this reconcilliaton is all a bunch of malarky.

A sham. A mockery.

Shamockery.

These political wounds run deep from attacks of candidate's intelligence, heritage, race, associations, policy platforms, and gaffes.  Many encapsulate this as their surrogates and ardent supporters to prove their point or knock down another's rationale.

And now after this slugfest, I find an instant shaking of hands and pats on the back like we signed the Dayton Peace Accords. Hillary supporters are smart and can see right through this feigned sympathy.

My advice.

Let the Hillary supporters be.  Let time pass.  This will not be over til Hillary decides to step down which signals to her supporters to stand down and coalesce around Obama which will be weeks from now.

For those hoping for an everlasting peace. This lovefest will end shortly folks.

MyDD will return back to a hotbed of heated debate and antaganosim in which both sides put the throat on the jugular or slice away at the others' credibility and elecability.

Have fun and stop being 'nice'. Be honest and respectful and maybe one day we will truly coalesce against McCain '08

Re: Stop acting 'Nice' with Hillary Supporters (2.00 / 4)

I for one am tired of fighting.  If Hillary supporters are willing to agree to fight against McCain even if Obama is the nominee then this interfamily feud should be considered over.  The bad feelings of the campaign should be forgotten in favor of party unity.  As Lincoln said, "The best way to destroy my enemy is to make him my friend".

Already done, bud.  I would like to think (no I don't think, I know) that if the shoe were on the other foot this morning, I would not be here, sniping at Obama supporters, who would be feeling pretty damned devastated today.

Re: Tip Jar (2.00 / 6)

What a tragedy to work so hard for Obama in the primary, and then throw it all away by not understanding the importance of winning over her supporters for November.

I suppose one could simply repeat platitudes about how "the party will unify" as though it just magically happens, or deliver lectures about how anyone who wouldn't support the nominee isn't a real Democrat, but I don't see either of those as actually advancing the goal of winning.

There's a real failure here to keep one's eye on the ball, it seems to me.  The end goal of this campaign is something more than burning Hillary Clinton at the stake.

I think I've been fair and pretty nice towards (2.00 / 3)

both camps despite being an Obama supporter - pointing out the vicious attacks and condemning from both.

I just, last night, decided that I'm not going to fight anymore and instead just discuss the issues and try to make certain everyone feels their in an atmosphere that isn't oppressive.

Gloaters are jackasses. And I expect the gloating to  be up now that the 5 or 6 hour wear of "aw, let's coalesce" has worn off. I hope it continues but I'm seeing some pretty antsy comments in the last few.

And I am running on 2 hours of sleep out of 48 hours... so I'm on a short temper as well ^_^.

some people never will get over the fact that Hillary got beat. The diarist and TeresainPA seem to fit that description.

If Hillary was our strongest nominee, she'd have won.

The fact that she had all the money, all the endorsements, was known to 100% of the country and had the only consultants who'd ever won a Democratic campaign since Carter working for her............AND STILL LOST should only highlight the obvious......

She is NOT our strongest candidate for November. The one that BEAT her despite those advantages is.

Just let it go. (2.00 / 2)

Let them decide and let's not force it on them. That's the smart thing to do.

Until then, just be nice and say it in more civil terms (what you just said).

There is never any harm in being classy, particularly when the alternative is not being classy.

Some people may be in the mood to accept a handshake, some may not, but that shouldn't keep anyone from offering one.

No change from me (2.00 / 4)

I've been trying to be reasonable to both sides since I got here.

THIS, today, this feeling, right now... that is why I even came here.  I knew this would eventually happen, and I want people to embrace it.

The day Clinton and Obama supporters shake hands, then turn and look at McCain with righteous fury in our eyes, that is the day we win the country back.

Re: Stop acting 'Nice' with Hillary Supporters (2.00 / 2)

Anger at a candidate should not affect anger at one another here.  You can fight on issues without wishing anything but good for the person you argue with.  You must separate the two things. That goes for all people you have disagreements with, other Dems, GOPs, it's not about trashing people but rather an attempt to find common ground and not running over people in an attempt to be "right."

Re:I can live with sympathy (2.00 / 2)

But it's clear that there is a self-serving quality to some of the olive branches being extended by Obama supporters.  Now that it seems likely that Obama will be the nominee, some are realizing that the people they've been gleefully insulting for the past few months could withhold their support and make Obama's primary victory a Pyrrhic one.

I think you're right, it's going to take time for the bad feelings on both sides to go away.

by half nelson on Wed May 07, 2008 at 12:50:59 PM EST

Re:I can live with sympathy (none / 0)

I haven't engaged in that; and I think anyone that does on our side fails to recognize our slogans of unity and new politics.

And I agree. It will take time. And it should. Obama supporters shouldn't be forcing this on Clinton supporters. It's a bit rude. No one needs to go around saying what will happen in November - that's threatening.

Just be polite and let everyone decide for themselves; despite the contrary, we're all reasonable folk.

If I was as angry as some of these folks, I'd say I wouldn't pull for Clinton - but the truth is I'd probably max out for her a couple of months from now.

Re:I can live with sympathy (none / 0)

There is a bit of a discrepancy between Obama's message of unity and "new politics" and some of his online supporters.  "He's going to unify us all, dammit!  Why won't you lowbrows, racists and bitchy women get on board?"  I've wondered at times why people who seem to relish provocation and inflammatory rhetoric are drawn to someone like Obama.

But that's just some of his supporters, probably a small minority.  The Obama canvassers who came to my door last month were all very nice.  I voted for Clinton but could have gone either way and still could.

As someone who wasn't emotionally wed to either candidate, I am sorry for those who feel more strongly about Clinton.  I hope this thing comes to a resolution that those ardent supporters can live with.

Re: Stop acting 'Nice' with Hillary Supporters (2.00 / 1)

I'm no fan of Hillary. She's run about as sleazy and classless a campaign as it has ever been my displeasure to witness, Dick Nixon notwithstanding.

That said, with the race for the nomination over, we are all Democrats, mostly with similar values. It's time to bring the party together and prepare for the arduous task of giving John McCain a well-deserved beating in November.

It's time to heal the wounds and welcome Hillary's supporters into Obama's big tent.

And, while I would have no interest myself in seeing Hillary offered the VP nod, due primarily to the fact that you can't have her without having Bill, I think she'd be a fine choice for Majority Leader in the Senate. Harry Reid has not, to my mind, done a particularly good job and she'd be a fine replacement.

Re: Stop acting 'Nice' with Hillary Supporters (none / 0)

and your first sentence is why you won't get HRC supporters to come on over.

your hyperbole is noted.  and I take no joy in stating that if Obama is the nominee, he will get creamed in the GE.  If you are old enough to have remembered Tricky Dick, you should remember our losses in 1968, 1972, 1980, 1984, 1988, 2000, 2004 - with our nice, uber-liberal candidates.

nothing wrong with being uber-liberal - I am one.  But you don't lead the USA as someone uber-left or uber-right.  You've got to get in the middle

This is as clueless a comment as I have ever read.  If you really felt it was time to bring the party together, you wouldn't take a ridiculous cheap shot in your first paragraph.

But you just can't resist, can you?  It's more important to make sure everyone knows what an awful person Hillary Clinton is, than to actually win in November.  God forbid you could keep that opinion to yourself.

That guy is such a pushover.  Jon Stewart matched my feelings exactly when he said, "I think I could filibuster you."

We need someone tough in that role and Clinton does fit the bill.  I'm just concerned that Clinton may end up damaging her relations with her colleagues over this gas tax thing.
