22,000+ DEAD -- YOUR HELP NEEDED -- DONATE PLEASE

Via CNN, the death toll of the Myanmar cyclone has skyrocketed to 22,000 with another 41,000 people missing.

The people of Myanmar need your help! Please consider making a donation to one of the disaster relief agencies listed below.

International Red Cross/Red Crescent

Medecins Sans Frontieres/Doctors Without Borders (choose your country from the list at the bottom of the page)

World Vision International (choose your country from the list at the bottom of the page)

Mercy Corps

UNICEF

Oxfam International

If anyone has any other agencies please post them in the comments and I'll try to update this list periodically.

I wouldn't generally beg for recs, but providing relief for this disaster is too important to go unnoticed. Please help get the word out and donate. Every penny counts!

Update [2008-5-6 15:52:28 by CrazyDrumGuy]: Thanks for your help getting this to the top of the rec list, and thanks even more for your donations! I've added Oxfam International per toyomama's suggestion in the comments. All of these are worthy organizations and your help is appreciated. USAID has allocated $3.25 million for disaster relief already, pending visa requests for aid workers to be completed (more details here).

22,000+ DEAD -- YOUR HELP NEEDED -- DONATE PLEASE (2.00 / 2)

Please Recommend this article.  A tragey of this disasterous consequences in human toll needs to have it's profile elevated so that we can all do what we can to help.

Highly recommended.

Three Great Relief Organizations (2.00 / 3)

For those of you considering a donation to get immediate aid to the Myanmar victims, you might consider Oxfam International, Oxfam America, or Doctors Without Borders. They are usually some of the first relief organizations on the scene when disasters like this occur.

Recced!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (2.00 / 1)

A horrible tragedy, indeed. I chose UNICEF to donate to this morning, while my husband is covering the Barack donation this morning as well. Thank you for this diary. Hopefully, people will be responsive.

I had no idea it was this bad.
I think I'll go with Doctors Without Borders.

Thanks for posting this. (2.00 / 2)

I hope anyone who's planning to donate to their candidate in the next few days will rethink it and try to give something to one of these agencies. I don't have a lot of resources at the moment, but I think I can give at least $35. Maybe more by Friday.

Very proud to see this on the rec list, by the way.

Re: Thanks for posting this. (2.00 / 1)

It almost wasn't on the rec list.  I am happy to see that it now is.  I am donating to one of these today, not sure which is the best, but I will do so as soon as I look into them a little more.

I was trying to remember (none / 0)

wasn't Myanmar also hit by the Tsunami?

This is a horrible tragedy and it seems to be made worse by the fact that the government will not let anyone in to see the damage.

I don't really understand how that many people died.  Can someone fill me in?  Was it massive flooding?

Re: 22,000+ DEAD -- YOUR HELP NEEDED -- DONATE PLE (2.00 / 1)

The huge loss of life is truly sickening and my heart goes out to the people of Myanmar. And, I am by no means telling people not to donate. However, how many of the 22,000 confirmed dead and 44,000 missing met their fate before the storm?  I

Re: 22,000+ DEAD -- YOUR HELP NEEDED -- DONATE PLE (none / 0)

Yeah, the great leaders (a*hole dictator et al) have a policy NOT to allow foreign aid into the country. I would not be surprised if this was used as an opportunity to eliminate political opposition, or just to clear out certain areas - You know, kind of like the Republicans did to Blacks during and after Katrina. We're shooting Mexicans and Mexican Americans at the borders. Great country - at least the people who aren't currently running it. Go Hillary!

Re: 22,000+ DEAD -- YOUR HELP NEEDED - (none / 0)

Horrible.  Also, right now the Bush Administration has only pledged $250,000.  No, I didn't forget a zero.  Two hundred and fifty thousand dollars.  Thousand.

That's horrible.

Re: 22,000+ DEAD -- YOUR HELP NEEDED - (none / 0)

I just read the US has pledged $3.25 million and offered to send in Navy ships if they can get the clearance to do so.  From what I understand relief agencies are having problems getting in due to the gov't restrictions.

On cnn.com (none / 0)

they are saying the death toll is at 100,000.  Probably 1,000,000 homeless.  There are food shortages, civil unreast.. UGH what a tragedy.

Re: 22,000+ DEAD -- YOUR HELP NEEDED -- DONATE PLE (none / 0)

Read "The Shock Doctrine" by Naomi Klein before donating, especially the chapter on the Tsunami. It will make you weep.   The fishing people of Sri Lanka are living in what amounts to concentration camps while luxury hotels replaced the middle class tourist hotels and the fishing shacks.    Doctors Without Borders would be my choice.

100k now (none / 0)

Up to 100,000 now.  This could be worse than the Boxing Day Tsunami only because the Junta govt won't let any help in :(
