Obama Grows Lead in Gallup..2 More SD's

Barack Obama has extended his lead over Hillary Clinton in the current Gallup Poll for the Democratic Nomination.  It appears Obama's brief struggles in the poll over the Wright debacle has passed.  Many thought this would be the "game breaker" that would show Obama as "unelectable".

Obama  50
Clinton 45

Today's Gallup Poll along with the Rasmussen Poll shows Obama ahead.  The Wright furor seems to be behind him.

Update [2008-5-5 13:38:52 by hootie4170]: Obama to pick up atleast 2 more SD's from Maryland today; http://weblogs.baltimoresun.com/news/politics/blog/2008/05/obama_picks_up_maryland_superd.html
The chairman and vice-chairman of the Maryland Democratic Party are throwing their support behind Sen. Barack Obama on the eve of Tuesday's primaries in Indiana and North Carolina, giving the Illinois senator at least two additional superdelegates. Maryland Democratic officials said this morning that a few more of the state's uncommitted superdelegates -- including state Del. Heather R. Mizeur of Montgomery County -- could also announce their decisions today.

Thank you (2.00 / 0)

For providing clear visual evidence of what I have told every person that has ever talked about these national polls - our party is undecided and basically 50/50.

Not an exciting spin, but it is the truth.

Strangely enough, Jerome only reports on national polls twice in that time period...hmm, guess which two times....

You are mistaken (none / 0)

The Wright issue is not behind Obama by any means. You will see evidence of that tomorrow evening.

I understand the desire to look for something positive.

It is a little too flippant, however, to declare the Wright issue is behind him. He was asked about it on today's morning show interviews.

People are still talking about it and for those who weren't sure of not voting for him this is a ready-made excuse.

I won't be so sanguine if I were you.

Re: You are mistaken (2.00 / 1)

Having lived through the Clinton administration I think were all pretty aware that these issues have pretty short half-lives.

Re: You are mistaken (2.00 / 1)

Ok. Let me do the exact same to you, since you're so kind.

The issue of the Pledge delegate lead being insurmountable has not gone away. The reality is, a majority of superdelegates will not vote for Senator Clinton as it would be perceived as "overturning the pledged delegate count".

The Obama Campaign will attain a majority on May 20th and that's only a couple of weeks away.

I know it hurts that your candidate won't win, won't be the nominee and ultimately, won't be the President of the United States and that you're clinging to the idea that winning any of the remaining contests will change that but I understand the desire to look for something positive.

It's a little flippant, however, to think the Pledge delegate total will ever be "overturned" and a bit naive since this politics. Clinton surrogates are asked about it all the time and they just stumble as they create "Automatic delegates" "caucus delegates" and the "popular vote" in an attempt to change the narrative.

People say the delegate total should decide the nomination.

I wouldn't be so confident if I were you.

/condescension

But nice try on that. We'll win North Carolina, the Clinton camp will win Indiana and we move on with Senator Obama still having front-runner status.

Why isn't this front-paged like the Gallup poll that showed Clinton +4 in Gallup?

Yeah, I seem to recall something from Jerome about how that was evidence of Obama tanking.

Re: Obama Grows Lead in Gallup (2.00 / 2)

i can't believe how much Hillary has tanked in the past week.

it's like someone forgot to pack her parachute, while being attached to a 1 ton rock while heading straight into the Gulf of Mexico (1 mile off the coast of Louisianna).

at this point her only chance of survival is for the attached rock to get stuck onto an oil rig.

This poll undoubtedly shows she cannot win and should drop out.

Obama to pick up atleast 2 more SD's in Maryland today...

By David Nitkin

The chairman and vice-chairman of the Maryland Democratic Party are throwing their support behind Sen. Barack Obama on the eve of Tuesday's primaries in Indiana and North Carolina, giving the Illinois senator at least two additional superdelegates.

Maryland Democratic officials said this morning that a few more of the state's uncommitted superdelegates -- including state Del. Heather R. Mizeur of Montgomery County -- could also announce their decisions today.

A 2:30 p.m. news conference at the University of Maryland is being scheduled for the announcement, which will feature former Maryland Gov. Parris N. Glendening. Glendening had first backed New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, but was chosen as an add-on superdelegate committed to Obama at a state party meeting last weekend.

The Obama campaign has been putting pressure on unpledged superdelegates in several states to recapture momentum ahead of this week's primary, trying to counter negative publicity surrounding Obama's former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr.

Maryland has had 12 unpledged superdelegates, the second-highest amount of any state.

Party chairman Michael Cryor and Vice chairman Lauren Dugas Glover had previously said they would stay neutral during the primary season because of their positions. Cryor had referred to himself as being uncommitted, but not undecided.

The Press is in Hillary's court (none / 0)

Locally she is doing well with the "Applacian" voter.

The irony is that she is running a Republican style campaign and she is winning Republicans who admire her ruthless toughness, pander or no pander.

The irony is that she is going after the Bush voters, the nascar types, and she is winning them over.

Meanwhile the democratic brand is taking a beating.

That poll had all kinds of funny numbers.  Including the fact the Bill Clinton hurts Hillary just as much as Wright hurts Obama - 33%.

As a resident of northern Virginia, I can confirm that Marylanders are a bunch of elitists, which means these superdelegates don't count. Let them eat crabcake!

Re: Obama Grows Lead in Gallup..2 More SD's (none / 0)

Looking forward to those numbers shrinking considerably after tomorrow.  187 delegates at stake tomorrow (more than Pennsylvania).  Obama will hit 1627 pledged delegates (a majority of that category) on May 20 when Oregon and Kentucky vote (a combined 103 delegates), and should get a wave of superdelegate endorsements after that, several have already indicated they will support the pledged delegate winner.

This contest is wrapping up.
