Clinton Looks Confident, Obama Looks Weary but Hopeful

Barack Obama was looking weary as he endured a barrage of questioning by Tim Russert on his releationship with Rev. Wright. At the same time Clinton looked and acted confident and professional as she towered over host George Stephanopoulos and silenced her critics.

While being interviewed by Mr. Russert,Obama tried to quell the controversy over his connections to Rev Wright by simply ignoring it opting to change the subject.

For her part, Hillary Clinton did not even flinch when a woman in the audience, an Obama supporter who said she made less than $25,000 a year, argued she, too, thought Mrs. Clinton was "pandering" for short-term political gain. Instead Hillary rose to her feet and answered the women directly, cutting Stepanopoulos completely out of the camera shot.

When he tried to flummox her by asking whether the campaign would ever release the names of donors who had given money to her husband's foundation, Mrs. Clinton shut him down with a one word answer: "No."

In Short Mr. Obama revealed that he was not impervious to pressure, while Mrs. Clinton once again proved that it takes more than a village to make her sweat.

Re: And you look rather (none / 0)

This diarist has repeatedly put up absurd anti-Obama hit pieces.

For example, when he predicted that charges from a Republican Senate candidate could "potentially end Obama's candidacy", the guy being an insane rightwinger who, according to the 2/10/06 article in the Chicago Trib, "referred to a federal bankruptcy judge as a 'crooked, slimy Jew, who has a history of lying and thieving common to members of his race,'" and expressed "understand[ing] for how the Holocaust took place."  The Republican hack also referred to himself as America's foremost independent journalist, foreign policy expert, and corruption fighter.

Clinton Slipping (none / 0)

It looks to me like hillary is the one slipping!

Here's the link:http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/03/opinio n/03blow.html?_r=1&oref=slogin

So, to sum up: Look at the damn graphs. You can see that Clinton is in a staggering free-fall among African-American voters, her favorability is down 36 points while 17 percent view her more negatively than before, while Obama's favorable and negative ratings among whites have paired at five point increases. You can even see the small dip - about two percentage points - in his popularity among whites that can be attributed to the news cycles about his ex-pastor, and see that it has leveled out and is now on a straight horizontal line (meanwhile, Clinton's numbers among blacks continue on an extreme downward precipice). The greater context is that even including Obama's slight dip, he's more popular today among white voters than he ever was prior to February.
Not since Ronald Reagan has an American presidential candidate withstood such an assault in the media and seen his popularity not hurt by it, but, rather, galvanized by it. That's what is meant, in politics, by the term "Teflon."
Those facts won't stop many media (and Internet) talking heads from continuing - whether out of gullibility or intentional dishonesty - to prop up the "white voters" narrative, but it ought to inoculate you, kind reader, from believing it.

Obama did fine on MTP.  And since we're all particularly impressed with her concise answer, Obama had one, too.  When Russert asked him if Hillary's plan was a pander, he simply replied "Yes."

Strange, this pride felt at Hillary rising to her feet and getting confrontational with someone who needs FAR better than $30 over three months.  But she didn't flinch, you say?  Amazing!  Couldn't have anything to do with those guys in suits, packin' heat on her behalf, could it?

You're essentially telling me that my opinion is invalid, because I disagree with the "facts" which are, in fact, simply others' opinions.

Opinions can't be right or wrong.  That's why they aren't facts.

Re: Clinton Looks Confident, Obama Looks Weary but (none / 0)

A sour looking face?

I guess if you prefer Clintons smile-and-nod approach even while she's being hit with a stupid or slanderous question, then that's your preference.  On Morning Joe, she was smilin' and noddin', all while Mika was calling her tax plan a pander that wouldn't work.  Of course, none can top McCain's debate performance where he gave an answer about war or death or something awful, and then immediately put the biggest, fake, shit eatin' grin on his face.  It was a remarkable disconnect between what he'd taught himself to do, as a politician, and what he had just said.

And, for the record, I don't mean this as a criticism of Clinton for smiling while being attacked.  I understand that she's trying to project a certain image, as all candidates are, and that's probably part of it.  No biggie.  But Obama's image problem is that he isn't tough enough, and needs to hit harder when attacked.  Smiling while being attacked doesn't very well accomplish that.

What is showing you that previous poster is leaping to a conclusion based on opinion? If he saw the show, he's relying on primary source data, just like the newspaper.

I should also add that the comparison is ludicrous.  Clinton wins points in the article for her crowd interaction.  Is there an audience on MTP?  If there is, there certainly aren't any questions asked from the audience.

It's like arguing that she's a better driver based on Obama's bicycling skills.  It makes no sense!

And yet captures the essence of the campaign.

Do we want fancy BMX skills?

Or do we want someone who can summon Angelic Hordes?

*Sorry its a BBC America That Michel and Webb look reference and if you haven't seen that show you are lost about now.  Basically two super heros one has BMX skillls and one summons super natural beings to fight crime, the BMX guy tends to get a bit jealous...

Re: Clinton Looks Confident, Obama Looks Weary but (none / 0)

Kind of sounds like a bad show, but if you vouch for it, I'll take your word.  And, yes, I can see why BMX guy would get a bit jealous :)

But I think my (almost certainly poorly thought out) analogy has broken down.  It's not that Clinton has one skill and Obama another (summoning angels versus BMX, was it?), it's that Obama was in a venue where it was impossible to show any crowd interaction skills (angel summoning...this is really a fun comparison), because there wasn't a crowd.

I don't mind the idea that Clinton might be better at it (either crowd interaction or Angelic Horde summoning)...but using two totally different types of interviews to judge them is faulty.

Wait, did you just compliment Clinton for not releasing information on who is funding her husband's foundation? Given the amount of their money tied up in her campaign, and given the fact that some of their mutual money was raised by President Clinton speaking for NAFTA in Nicaragaua, aren't you concerned about conflict of interest in this candidate? Wouldn't you want her to have more transparency, not less?

I want a president that is open with information, and responsive to questions: not the opposite.  We've had eight years of that.

Re: Clinton Looks Confident, Obama Looks Weary but (none / 0)

don't have the Ayers numbers.  Rezko, about 100K that was refunded.  The difference is that Pres. Clinton was paid 10 million to speak for something his wife "opposes" (NAFTA), and they gave money to their own campaign. Also, Hillary was just on record talking about how terrible factory closings were in IN that were a direct result of actions in her husband's administration.  Is that the experience she's going to bring to the table?

Oh, I forgot.  This is retarded in more ways.  First of all, caucuses don't give big popular vote totals, and Obama cleaned house there. Second, this is only valid if you look at EVERY OTHER STATE'S totals as just "catching up the candidates even", and then only IL votes as "exceeding the tie".

Re: Clinton Looks Confident, (none / 0)

We are talking about two different interview shows, two different hosts, two contrasting styles. Tim Russert, although personally I think is an ass, has a hard hitting mike wallace style of questioning. George Stephanopolous if Iremember correctly, worked for the Clintons. Although a decent host, do you think maybe he went easy on Hillary, which is more his style anyway. I love the line "she towered over host George Stephannpolous" maybe he felt a little intimidated. That's her interview style, like her husband intimidate the interviewer.
