Obama's Appeal to Working Class Whites is Worsening: Updated

Barack Obama has a big problem on his hands with White Working Class voters leading up to the primary contests in Indiana and North Carolina. He is faltering in his attempts to win over this all important voting block, and the impression this group has of Obama is getting worse every day.

In an ominous sign of the damage that has been inflicted on the Obama campaign, polls are indicating that White Working Class Voters which include Blue Collar Workers, are very disturbed by Obama's associating with the controversial pastor Rev. Wright, and his demeaning statements about "small-town" residents. Even more alarming then the remarks by Obama and his former pastor, is the perception by this voting block that Obama has failed to  address their concerns about job losses and the battered economy.

Terry Madonna, a political science professor at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, Pa., summed it up best when he said,"While it's incredibly motivating and passionate and compelling, it lacks content," Madonna said. "Hillary would come in and relate to them, talk about the specifics of her policy."

Keith Wolfe, 41, a supermarket food stocker from Parkville, Md., said in a follow-up interview,"It's the stuff about his preacher ... and the thing he said about Pennsylvania towns, how they turn to religion,I don't think he'd be a really good leader."

The exit poll is based on in-person interviews with more than 36,000 voters in 28 states that have held primaries this year in which both candidates actively competed

dropping like a lead balloon? (2.00 / 1)

Who won the most recent contest in Guam?

Poll fluctuations of 3-6% hardly qualify as dropping like a lead balloon.

What's your predictions for NC, IN and OR? How well should HRC have to do to get the superdelegates to deliver the election to her?

Re: dropping like a lead balloon? (2.00 / 1)

I don't think a win by 7 votes for obama is anything you should be cheering about.  Especially, since his own campaign had expected a double digit victory.  CNN has it 50/50.

I think NC will be a victory for HRC mainly because it will be a low win for Obama.  Not only that, but the win for Obama there will come down in a stark racial divide.  Obama's problem now is that he can't win white voters, having that happen in NC will hurt him badly, even if he squeeks out a win.

Indiana will show Obama's weakness as well.  I predict a 10% win for her.  This will be devastating for him since much of IN shares a media market with IL.  Many talking heads have acted like this is a benefit for Obama, yet the Chicago media is the only market to have seriously covered Rezko throughout the year.  So, I've never been convinced this was an asset for Obama; however, it will be played as if it was.

OR is iffy.  He shows a lead there now, but after Hillary does well in NC and IN, and then BLOWS HIM OUT in West VA, which is the next contest (in which she is leading by almost 40% in polls), those polls in OR will shrink as well.

OR has a more liberal Dem Party than the rest of the country.  But, unlike office-holding Democrats, they do not have a battered wife syndrome...they actually want to win.  So, Obama may still be doing well with a trickle of super-delegate endorsements, but it is the voters he is not winning over.

Obama supporters need to stop asking the question: why doesn't hillary get out.  They need to start asking themselves: Why can't he close the deal.  Why can't he win.

With all that money and support in Washington, Why can't Barack Obama, the truth teller (the alleged truth teller, and his supporters assume that's all you need to do, tell the truth), then why isn't he winning?

yeah, I do not think so (2.00 / 5)

NY Times: Charles Blow

Obama Solid With White Voters, Clinton Not So Solid With Black Voters

The question is this: Have white Democrats soured on Obama? Apparently not. Although his unfavorable rating from the group is up five percentage points since last summer in polls conducted by The New York Times and CBS News, his favorable rating is up just as much.

On the other hand, black Democrats' opinion of Hillary Clinton has deteriorated substantially (her favorable rating among them is down 36 percentage points over the same period).

While a favorable opinion doesn't necessarily translate into a vote, this should still give the Clintons (and the superdelegates) pause. Electability cuts both ways.

here is a graph for you on approval rating:

And a nice summary by Al Giordano

So, to sum up: Look at the damn graphs. You can see that Clinton is in a staggering free-fall among African-American voters, her favorability is down 36 points while 17 percent view her more negatively than before, while Obama's favorable and negative ratings among whites have paired at five point increases. You can even see the small dip - about two percentage points - in his popularity among whites that can be attributed to the news cycles about his ex-pastor, and see that it has leveled out and is now on a straight horizontal line (meanwhile, Clinton's numbers among blacks continue on an extreme downward precipice). The greater context is that even including Obama's slight dip, he's more popular today among white voters than he ever was prior to February.

Not since Ronald Reagan has an American presidential candidate withstood such an assault in the media and seen his popularity not hurt by it, but, rather, galvanized by it. That's what is meant, in politics, by the term "Teflon."

Those facts won't stop many media (and Internet) talking heads from continuing - whether out of gullibility or intentional dishonesty - to prop up the "white voters" narrative, but it ought to inoculate you, kind reader, from believing it.

You're arguing like a Republican.

Data from the NYT may be flawed b/c of methodology.

But to argue that the source is intrinsically flawed because of some other point is the same kind of manipulation Republican operatives use to manage their simpletons.

The way the GOP does it is to insist that the entire media has a liberal bias. Any facts that the media reports that contradict Right Wing ideology are suspect b/c of the "liberal bias" of the media.

Well your link shows that Hillary has a 17% drop amongst blacks and Obama has 5% drop amongst whites.

Last I knew, 17% of 12% of population is 2% and 5% of 88% population is 4.5%.

Since some Obama supporters are so knowledgeable about "Math", which math shows who is losing more votes?

And ask NYT to do an analysis from Feb (not July 07 when people were still trying to know the candidates) to April 30. Your percentage play will fall flat then.

Obama's Appeal, the truth (2.00 / 3)

Nice try but here's the truth:

By Al Giordano
I turn on the TV, read the political columnists (and a significant number of analytically-challenged bloggers, too) and all I hear is a bunch of white folk prattling on about their favorite narrative: "Obama's losing white voters!"
They've swallowed the Clinton racially-obsessed spin, hook, line and sinker. Some, because they are gullible, haven't an original idea in their little pea brains, and follow the pack of what everybody else is talking about. Others, because they like to toss around knowing falsehoods. Nary a superdelegate can go on Fox News without being berated by an anchorperson screeching (this is pretty close to an exact quote): "But your duty as a superdelegate is to select the most electable and that's Hillary Clinton!" That these anchorpersons are Republican partisans openly cheering for Senator Clinton is our first clue of the game afoot. One of the major successes of Rush Limbaugh's Operation Chaos is that it has got all the right-wing pundits and reporters marching lockstep behind the effort to give Clinton enough oxygen to keep slashing away at Senator Obama, who remains the prohibitive likely Democratic nominee.
And when Clinton wins state primaries that, because of demographics, she was always going to win - last week, Pennsylvania and next week, Indiana - they then wave that event up like a blood-soaked flag as proof of their narrative: See? See? We told you so! White people won't vote for Obama!
So imagine my pleasant surprise this morning to see a New York Times columnist, Charles Blow, who did what none of these chattering lunkheads have done. He looked at the hard data of how voters, white and black, view the two Democratic candidates - favorably or negatively? - and how those views have progressed over time. The data is based on multiple CBS-New York Times polls (among the most respected survey outfits among competing pollsters) over two years and more. Check it out:
