UPDATEx4: CNN- Obama resigns church membership (confirmed)

CNN commentator Roland Martin is reporting that Obama has resigned his membership in his church, Trinity Baptist. Will post more once something posts online.

UPDATE #1: Still nothing on the web, though the story has been picked up by most of the other blogs out there. Looks legitimate, though. Also- interesting timing, as the talking heads are busy discussing the restart of the DNC Rules meeting, which just got going a few minutes ago. Smart?

UPDATE #2: Reputable Chicago blogger Monroe Anderson is reporting that Obama sent a letter to Trinity yesterday. He's critical of Obama's decision, but understands it. I feel the same- I wish it wasn't necessary, but politically it seems like the only answer.

UPDATE #3: CNN saying they have confirmed this. Still no web link, but running on the ticker.

UPDATE #4: CNN confirms through Obama's campaign and has posted an article online. Obama will hold a news conference after his appearance in South Dakota.

i have to admit my response to SOME white people's heads exploding when they see the way Black people view them is similar to Rev. Pfleger's.

Black people know the truth about America, they know the truth about American racism, and, what galls SOME white Americans is that they speak the truth about America. and of course, politicians are NOT supposed to tell the truth about America.

so i don't think these church people are trying to hurt Obama, they just put the truth above a political campaign. and while Rev. Pfleger's remarks were WAY over the top and very offensive, they were also a pretty accurate reflection of the sense of entitlement too many white people have, MAYBE even the Clintons, MAYBE (we'll see next week).

but i know, the truth is anathema to politics. so very bad move politically by the church, Obama probably had to resign.

Second that she is entitled not because she's spent her lifetime working for families and children and her country, but also because of who she is married to. (Assumption with no evidence.)

So her husband coasted on her salary until he was elected governor. And that's OK. But it's not OK for his wife to strike out and compete in electoral politics based on a lifetime of work for her country. Because she has a successful husband, so she should stay out of electoral politics. (Sexist.)

She clearly feels entitled. She said the was going to be the nominee way back in November 2007. She hadn't even considered that it would be hers. Those were her words.

She's not entitled to anything based on her life. Her life wasn't more valuable to our nation than most of the other people running.

Again. White privilege and white entitlement complexes are real things and people certainly aren't going to admit that they feel that way. Their actions speak where there words will not. If you think the idea of white privilege and entitlement complexes aren't real that's your problem not mine but those ideas don't meet the definition of racist at all.

Jesus, is that true? That makes me so very ill. What the hell did that congregation do to ANYBODY? For that matter, what did the pastor do? They were words!!!! That's it!!!

There's two things to learn from that. Number one, freedom to worship as you choose in your own private church only counts if you are conservative. Number two, when Wright talks about how white people have no respect for black people, it is not entirely unwarranted, even now.

I can confirm this... I help with Obama's religious targeting. His membership to the Church was distracting the Church from their community goals, and was distracting the nation (wrongly) from our common challenges.

The Obama family is moving into a big White House in DC in a few months, and have not attended Trinity for some time due to the campaign, so they will be looking for a new Church in DC.

First, the Philadelphia version: Barack could not disown Wright anymore than he could disown Granny.

Then, Wright gets thrown under the bus: Barack maintains that he hadn't seen the bile and venom from Rev. Wright that the rest of us had been reading about in the media for two months. Even though he attended this "church" for 20 years.

Today: after the skit put on at Trinity by "Father" Pfleger, Barak decides to cut his ties to Trinity.

This, folks, is what we call "just another politician". And his politics isn't the politics of hope, or change...it's just the same old bullshit.

That's really the bottom line for this HRC supporter. Yes, the guy is basically just another politician, except with a pretty good line of bullshit to convince people otherwise. But he's got a lot of other admirable qualities, he's going to be our nominee, he could make a very good president, and we desperately need to win this damn election. Take NAFTA: after Barack managed to piss of the Canadian trade minister with his continual rants against free trade, he clumsily dispatched an aide to assure the guy (David Emerson) that he is really for NAFTA.

(See, Obama was against NAFTA, before he was for it)

Bottom line: now that Bush and Company have alienated most of Asia and Europe and turned them against us, Obama and Pelosi (who torpedoed the Columbia Trade Agreement) are trying to do the same here in the Western Hemisphere! Folks, you have to try hard to piss off the Canadians...besides which, no country has been a stronger ally and better trading partner. Perhaps Senator Obama would just like to deep-six NAFTA, and see if Hugo Chavez will sell us the billion barrels of oil will we get from Canada? I suspect he has no clue that we import more from Canada than any other country in the world.

Just one example of an issue that this clown is completely ignorant about, and has already managed to botch. Bottom line, we've just 8 years of the "Amateur Hour"...we don't need Barack to give us another four years of the same.

The Philadelphia speech, hailed by some as being on a par with the Gettysburg addresss, used a flawed kind of "moral equivalence": equating an elderly relative who uses an occassional racial epithet, with a deranged minister who spews vitriol and hate from the pulpit. If Obama can't discern the difference between the two, then he's about as dumb as W, and that's pretty dumb.

That conclusion doesn't make a damn bit of sense. Wright forced him to do what he did and if the stories of harassment are true racist Americans forced him to do this bit.

This disappoints me, but I guess it's best for everyone involved. I'm not sure how he can spin this, though. Maybe he can just stay quiet, but in a sad way, not a guilty way. Not speaking badly of the church might be a good start. So would speaking well of the church's parishioners.

If people have been harassing them, I think that might be something very good to bring to light as well. People might not be so upset about a preacher speaking with such heavy racial overtones if they learn what kind of monsters they are dealing with now.

If you're being chased by an angry bull and then you notice you're also being chased by a swarm of bees, it doesn't really change things. Just keep on running.

Well, if he was going to resign from his church after the Pfleger comments, media wise, right now couldn't have been better. Today is the DNC meeting. Tomorrows is the PR primary. Tuesday is the the Montana/SD primary. By Wednesday or Thursday, Obama should have enough delegates to declare victory. On a regular week, this resignation would dominate the news cycle. But with so much going on this week, and the news being released on Saturday, By Wednesday, the resignation with be the 4th or 5th story in the news.
