Obama is Simply Ignorant About Memorial Day

Here is Obama's prepared remark...

"On this Memorial Day, as our nation honors its unbroken line of fallen heroes, our sense of patriotism is particularly strong."

But here is what he actually said, apparently ad libbing...

"On this Memorial Day, as our nation honors its unbroken line of fallen heroes -- and I see many of them in the audience here today -- our sense of patriotism is particularly strong."

This has been written off as gaffe, but why did he acknowledge people in the audience when specifically talking about who we honor on Memorial Day?

It's clear Obama doesn't know why Memorial Day is observed -to remember and honor men and women that perished in military service to the country.

He doesn't understand the difference between Memorial Day and Veteran's Day, which is to honor all military veterans.

There is no other explanation for his deliberately straying from prepared remarks to acknowledge audience members when talking about who our nation is honoring on Memorial Day.

This isn't the kind of ignorance we need in a president.

This year I started out as an Edwards guy before the  elections started, I voted for him in my caucus (I was in a tiny minority there) and in mid february I moved into Obama's camp.

I don't think I am a republican (though if the parties flip like they did between Teddy Roosevelt's time and now I'll gladly say I am a republican).

Actually I've watched every debate (2.00 / 1)

and I do believe that...the only thing Hillary reads is the poll numbers in whatever state she's running in this week.

She certainly would have done well to flip through the pages of the NIE back in '02.

Does anybody read other diaries before they post? (2.00 / 2)

How many times is this same subject going to posted. This makes the third by my count.

It's as useless this time as it was the first

This diary is idiotic. (2.00 / 3)

Here is a direct quote from Obama's speech:

"know that our sadness today is mixed with pride; that those we've lost will be remembered by a grateful nation; and that our presence here today is only possible because your loved ones, America's patriots, were willing to give their lives to defend our nation."

It's clear he fully understands what Memorial Day is all about, and he was just recognizing the many veterans in the audience to hear him speak.

I expect this ind f dishonest bullshit from Rush LImbaugh or Powerline -- not fellow Democrats.

The story was, in fact, covered on Powerline - presumably the origin of the diary.

Huh (2.00 / 4)

I liked this better when I saw it on Powerline.

And now I'm going to go back over the past few days and read the many posts from Clinton supporters about how disgusting it is when politics descends into a game of "gotcha."

Re: Obama is Simply Ignorant About Memorial Day (none / 0)

I won't call names, and I won't point fingers or call anyone out.  But putting "ignorant" in the title of this diary is perhaps a bit along the lines of making an expensive film and titling it "suckfest" or "a terrible awful thing"- you're begging for bad review quotes.

Re: Obama is Simply Ignorant About Memorial Day (none / 0)

I can see how the phrasing may have been misunderstood but come on, is this the best you can do?  Washington Post had a different take:

The emphasis on the living played well on a day of observance for the dead. The warm crowd warmed to Obama's call for positioning smaller VA clinics more conveniently to rural veterans who face long drives to larger, urban facilities. And there was applause for increased attention to mental health, including routine screening for post-traumatic stress syndrome.

Senator Obama is a great candidate and I look forward to supporting him in the general election.

Heh.  Just this afternoon, I was thinking how ignorance of the True Spirit of Memorial Day was the biggest problem afflicting our nation.
