Behind Closed Doors

On Friday, Todd alerted us to the fundraisers Bush was planning to attend for McCain - and how they were scaled down and closed to press. Apparently the McCain campaign doesn't want video of Bush praising their candidate. And as noted in the post below, this association is growing.

Today, Obama picked up the line (via Ambinder):

Here's what Barack Obama plans to say at 3:30 pt ET in North Las Vegas, NV:

"I just had the privilege of visiting with Felicitas Rosel and Francisco Cano at their home here in Las Vegas.

Today, John McCain is having a different kind of meeting. He's holding a fundraiser with George Bush behind closed doors in Arizona. No cameras. No reporters. And we all know why. Senator McCain doesn't want to be seen, hat-in-hand, with the President whose failed policies he promises to continue for another four years."

Tucker Bounds, a McCain spokesman, responds: "Whether the issue is global climate change or urging a more effective strategy in Iraq, John McCain has had clear but respectful differences of opinion with the President. However, it isn't surprising that Barack Obama is trying to disguise his own lack of depth and weak leadership on the issues with political generalizations and superficial attacks."

In simple political scorekeeping, every time McCain's people have to say, defensively, 'no no, he does sometimes disagree with the President,' it's a win for Obama.

It's not an easy argument for McCain to make, especially considering that he voted with Bush 95% of the time in 2007 and a full 100% of the time in 2008.

Update [2008-5-27 15:59:38 by Josh Orton]: Here's the video of Obama hitting the charge:

David Shuster up now for the next hour, and I expect him to discuss it as well.

Gotta love it. :o)

Re: Behind Closed Doors (2.00 / 2)

Hammer on, folks.

Remember what we are fighting for here. As this primary draws to a close, let us spend our time picking each other up, dusting each other off, and turning our attention to the real enemy.

We all have our preferences for standard bearer, but we follow the standard, not the one who waves it. Remind each other as we nurse our wounds.

Defeat the third term of Bush. Vote Democrat.

Re: Behind Closed Doors (none / 0)

I guess this prolonged Democratic primary has put Obama in the fighting mood!  I love it!  Certain politicians are very good about making attacks stick to their opponents - Obama is no exception.  His attacks seem to work whereas Kerry's attacks on Bush in 2004 didn't seem to work very well.  I don't know if it's how Obama phrases his attacks or whether it's his charisma or comfort level in front of the camera.  However, Obama has been relentless and consistent with equating McCain to Bush just like Bush and the GOP were relentless with labeling Kerry a flip flopper.

Vote to give Mr. Decider every dime he's asked for to flush down the rate hole of Iraq?

I'm not going to troll rate you (none / 0)

I should troll rate you.  If I had more courage than fear I would troll rate you.  But I'm being pragmatic today.
Even though your post explicitly violates the principle indicated in Jerome's statement: "This is a Democratic site. Clinton is a Democrat" I will not troll rate you because the universality of the principle has not yet been tested, and because I do not want to be labeled as a 'mindless Obamatard' or whatever the epithet is.  However, you are a fucking troll, tearing down a Democrat for no better reason than your own compulsive attention-whoring.
Yes, I'm aware there's a possible misogynist reading of the myth. Sorry.

At some point (1.20 / 5)

Obama is going to have to run on his own merits.  "Hope", "change" and a single 2002 antiwar speech have been good enough so far, but he will never be able to morph McCain into Bush.

Bad as he is, McCain has accomplished more by accident than Obama has on purpose.

by Upstate Dem on Tue May 27, 2008 at 06:03:42 PM EST

Re: At some point (none / 0)

I'm sure McCain would welcome a contribution as a token of your support of his campaign against our nominee.

Sweet! (2.00 / 1)

Now we just need the media to start buying into the whole "Third Bush Term" mantra and states like Ohio will swing to Obama right quick.  If the McSame thing sticks this is over before it even started.

Now...  Who should Obama pick for VP?  Hmmmmm....

Re: Behind Closed Doors (none / 0)

Barack pounded the hell out of McSame numerous times today - it has been glorious.  It seems like it's been a few lifetimes since we had a Democratic nominee who was willing to just hammer the crap out of the Republicans like a pinata.

Re: Behind Closed Doors (none / 0)

And when McCain responds he comes across as petty and prickly. McCain better come up with a way to shift the dynamic soon or he's in pretty bad shape.

(Oh yeah, I forgot, the press will shift the dynamic because they're invested in a close horse race regardless of reality.)

That needs to be an ad. Shown heavily everywhere, before McCain has a chance to rectify that.

Either McCain is shown as the Bush loyalist he is, or he points out how many votes he's missed and we hit him for laziness and try to get him to step down from the Senate.
