Rewriting the 2000 election controversy

I have been watching all the talking heads on the 24/7 Cable News stations a lot recently, and the stupidity of these people has been driving me crazy.  I keep hearing them cry hypocrisy over the Democrats possibly nominating the candidate with the least popular votes despite disputing the 2000 election because Bush took office even though he lost the popular vote nationwide.

Now, there are many differences between the current situation and the one in 2000 (The MI/FL situation, caucuses vs. primaries, no popular vote numbers from some caucus states, should contests in Puerto Rico, Guam, the Virgin Islands, American Samoa, and other US territories count towards the popular vote even though they can't vote in a general election, etc..).  And so I don't want to get into the legitimacy of the Florida/Michigan situation and who actually leads in the popular vote.

All I wanted to say to the morons on the right who is that the legitimacy of the 2000 election was not disputed over the fact that Bush "won" despite losing the national popular vote.  Al Gore was fully prepared to concede the election even though he won the popular vote nationwide once the Florida votes were counted.  The winner of national popular vote was never in doubt.  The election was disputed because the Secretary of State in Florida refused to count all the votes in that state in accordance with the law, and thus we never got to find out who actually won Florida's 25 electoral votes. So, note to right wing hacks, you still stole that election in 2000 and you are either stupid or completely dishonest...probably a combination of both.  But I guess we already knew that.  I just needed to do a little venting.  I hope you understand.  VIVA DEMOCRACY!

well maybe if gore was not an idiot and had chosen someone other than Lieberman more democrats would have had fewer qualms and might have handed him the election.

While I agree that Lieberman was a terrible mistake, that really has nothing at all to do with the fiasco of the 2000 election.

actually, I watched Recount on HBO and Lieberman kinda screwed the Gore Team when he went on MTP and stated that all military overseas ballots should count, regardless if they were missing the witness and date on the ballot.

it was funny - the Team stated something about you just heard the 2004 candidate speaking.

I'm going to watch it tonight ~ and again, Lieberman was, is and always will be an anathema to our party ~ but he is not the reason that the election was stolen.

true, but he didn't help the case either.  Went against the strategy when he already agreed to it.

Which is a really really good argument for why selecting a GOOD VP for this race is imperative.  Not just a "presumptive" VP.

Gore was never an idiot.  He was falsely branded by the Rethugs and the MSM.

gore is an idiot... (none / 0)

politically.  can you think of worse strategic errors in our political history than a.) pulling out of one's home state, b.) moving his campaign into florida with little more than a month to go, or c.) sending a low-level volunteer to approve palm beach county's (now famous butterfly) ballot?

i sure can't...

According to Hillary (none / 0)

not annointing her President is akin to 2000, civil rights, women's suffrage and Zimbabwe.

Democrats are nominating the person who won the nomination....and it will be Barack Obama.

There's nothing even close to 2000 in this primary.

Re: According to Hillary (2.00 / 1)

I'm sorry but I believe that the media and many others have been attempting to annoint Obama ~ Hillary is just trying to win!

She lost. Trying to win now is delusional and destructive.

Re: Rewriting the 2000 election controversy (none / 0)

The popular vote is not the metric by which we determine candidates or the presidency.  You can make an argument that it should, but as it stands now it is a note worthy fact nothing more.

BTW, the recount movie was pretty good.  Made me reflect on how different things would have been had things went differently that year.

I almost lost it watching it.  That was the first election I could vote in and when Oregon went for Gore I thought surely we would win but no.  Still so sad...

Re: Rewriting the 2000 election controversy (none / 0)

The GOP talking-heads have us in a bind.

If HRC wins, they'll cry about the pledged delegate leader, a black man, being ousted by party insiders.

If Obama wins, they'll cry about fantasy popular vote totals in the "undemocratic" Democratic party.

They are desperate, and HRC is playing into their hands.
