Yesterday's Meet The Press finally abandoned all pretense to fairness in coverage of the Democratic primary, and spent much of its time hammering Hillary. However, there were two particular cases of grave cognitive dissonnance.
Out of nowhere, Jon Meacham: 'I don't think we talked about Henry II enough in campaigns...Just stay away from the pastors, you know. "Who shall rid me of this troublesome priest?" Turbulent priest.'
Oh, yes, very witty. Jon Meacham hoping for the assassinations of Hagee and Parsley. He didn't? Oh, no; he didn't think the idea of a political assassination could be a little bit sensitive at this time (admittedly, it is a little remote in history)
(for those few of you not versed in 12th Century English politics, Henry II is said to have made that comment in anger about archbishop Thomas Becket, who was getting too politically powerful; some unhinged wackos took that as a direction and went off and murdered Thomas. Furthermore; he should be wary of his historical parallels: after all Thomas became a saint and Henry died in ignominy, by the roadside, with his servants looting his jewels and clothes).
Later: discussing whether Hillary has been the victim of sexism, Russert turned to...
...are you ready for this?...
Maureen Dowd. Dear God. And what did she say?
"I think it's poppycock, really".
Words fail. Really.
