Obama Up Big In Ohio - SUSA

SUSA has polled a bunch of VP matchups and a straight generic Obama McCain matchup in Ohio and Obama comes out the huge winner!

http://www.surveyusa.com/index.php/2008/ 05/23/ohio-vp-matchups/

Obama is up +8 in a straight matchup, and wins virtually every battle with VPs included.

Looks like great numbers for Obama in Ohio!!!!

Wow that is great news!  Flip that one on the map and lo and behold, Obama is winning.

Re: Obama Up Big In Ohio - SUSA (none / 0)

I increasingly have no confidence in SUSA despite the worship it was receiving in the primary season.  Obama's chances in Ohio aren't that good (and I'm an Obama supporter).  To me, if he wins Ohio he'll have 300+ Electors and he can easily win the WH without Ohio (Kerry + (VA || CO+NM) + (Iowa-NH) for instance)

Re: Obama Up Big In Ohio - SUSA (none / 0)

What do you mean?  Obama WILL outperform Kerry (Bush actually got a decent amount of the ohio black vote in 2004) and ohio was very close last time

McCain also does not inspire entusiasm among evangelicals.

Ohio's economy has been devastated... I think either canidate wins ohio without that much trouble..especially considering the dems control the state govt now

Re: Obama Up Big In Ohio - SUSA (none / 0)

My issue with relying on OH is entirely structural.  I think the election in 2004 was rigged for Bush through systematic neglect and monkeyshines at the polling places.  I really doubt that the Democratic machine there has had enough time to undo those Republican "safeguards".  Plus, the Democratic AG there has been mired in a scandal which probably added a great deal of friction to the whole process.  So, if Obama is "really" up by 8 pts, I'd say the election would maybe favor him by a point or two after handicapping the Repubs for there fine KOTV (Keep out the voters) strategy.

He's up in Ohio and PA so that's a good (none / 0)

starting point since he trends up in general.

Re: Obama Up Big In Ohio - SUSA (none / 0)

I think he can do it, but he has to work hard.  The blue-collar voters are pissed and they are tired of being taken advantage of.  He needs to find a way to tap into that without sounding wishy-washy.

i don't think there IS a way to tap into that (none / 0)

... which would be wishy washy. ;-)

Re: i don't think there IS a way to tap into that (none / 0)

Maybe I didn't choose my words well.

I grew up in Appalachia.  My parents voted for Hillary in the WV primary.  My aunt voted for Obama because she was so inspired by him.

I think that he could definitely reach out to and connect with these voters (Jim Webb said as much this week).

Even if he can't... (none / 0)

(like Sagacious Hillbilly, I am skeptical)

I do firmly believe that he must try. For the good of the coalition, no one must be ignored! It puts us on the moral high ground, if Obama is reaching out even to the most hard bitten places -- trying to give them a little hope.

I agree...He will make a strong attempt, but living in Appalachia (SouthWestern PA) it is daunting task...

Re: Obama Up Big In Ohio - SUSA (2.00 / 0)

As a Obama supporter I have to look at this a good news. However, since I have been saying all along looking a May polls to determine a November outcome is putting the cart way before the horse. I'm not going to start cheering, that would be more than a bit hypocritical.

Absolutely 100% possible. Not easy or assured by any means, but possible.

Wonder if Jerome'll flip the map?

When I follow the link it read +9 for Obama. Realclearpolitics also list +9 from this poll.

i think PA will go for Obama, Rendell and Casey will bring it home for him.  I am much more skeptical about OH though..

Re: Obama Up Big In Ohio - SUSA (none / 0)

You know this somewhat confirms my theory.

Notice that Hillary was NOT included on this poll.... and Obama did much better.

Obama seems to poll very well when the poll does not include the Hillary/McCain matchup

by CaptainMorgan on Fri May 23, 2008 at 11:48:12 AM EST

Actually He Is Up by 9 Points (none / 0)

48-39%, and don't forget SUSA almost always undercounts African Americans. This is especially true in the South but also true to a lesser degree in other states. It is one of the drawbacks of robopolling that Rasmussen seems to have adjusted for.

by Davidsfr on Fri May 23, 2008 at 11:59:07 AM EST

Edwards for VP (none / 0)

It looks like Obama should seriously consider Edwards as his running mate. And it looks like Edwards should reconsider taking the VP slot. Obama/Edwards beats McCain by 12 in Ohio.
