MS-Sen: Internal Poll SHOCKER

Marc Ambinder reports;

A rule of sorts for this blog: don't cite partisan polls. I'm going to make an exception for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee's latest survey of Mississippi voters. They give former governor Ronnie Musgrove (D) an eight point lead over Republican incumbent Roger Wicker. Even if the DSCC were inclined to fudge the poll (or their pollster was) -- no evidence that they have or will, but I'm just saying -- they wouldn't show their candidate in the lead by that much. Expectations are raised -- and if future polls consistently show Musgrove behind Wicker, we'll know that (a) the DSCC poll was misleading or (b) Wicker has regained a lead. The DSCC poll is consistent with Democratic energy in the state, with Republican pessimism, and with Musgrove's broad popularity.

In the wake of Travis Childers' victory in Mississippi-01, this shouldn't come as a complete surprise, but Wicker is not Greg Davis, he's an incumbent and a household name in much of the state, but then again, so is Musgrove.

Musgrove, however, lost his gubernatorial reelection campaign and actually never won his election outright the first time. (The election was thrown to the Mississippi Legislature). However Musgrove did get the plurality of the popular vote. I'm not sure where Musgrove stands in Mississippi (anyone in the Magnolia State care to comment?)

Could this seat really be competitive? Is there a Republican seat that's not?

Can't wait for November (2.00 / 1)

Obama's GOTV efforts will be very, very good for the down-ticket races. Add to that a right wing that's only lukewarm for McCain, and we may see a historic blow-out at multiple levels.

This is a seat where the AA increase could really make the difference.

Re: MS-Sen: Internal Poll SHOCKER (none / 0)

Almosr everyday seems to bring another republican senate seat into play. The count has gone past 10 now, and some of those seats appear to be firmly in the dem column already. There is a similar phenomenon going on in the House. We, as democrats, are on the verge of a dramatic victory in November. The only thing that could stop it is that we don't do what is necessary to unite this party. The only thing that could let this victory slip away is to allow ourselves to continue to be mired in disunity.

And remember, kids: Every seat that's competitive means the cash-strapped republicans have to spend even more!

Re: MS-Sen: Internal Poll SHOCKER (none / 0)

Obama is an interesting candidate when it comes to the South.  I don't expect him personally to do very well at the top fo the ticket.  However, he will have very large positive coattails down ballot.  Obama will lose because he will not be able to attract white Democrats, who will vote for white Dems downballot.  However, Obama will attract huge numbers of AA voters who will also vote for white Dems downballot.

Meh (none / 0)

Obama only has trouble with white Democrats who don't have a college degree.  Every other Demographic he does fine in.

Democrats traditionally don't win that demographic, anyway, yet still occasionally win elections.

Democrats never win the white vote...Clinton didn't even win the white vote. Obama can afford to lose the white vote by a fairly large margin if AA's turn out in record numbers.

Re: MS-Sen: Internal Poll SHOCKER (none / 0)

Hmmm...I'd be wary.  It does depend somewhat on what the numbers are- mid/high forties or higher for Musgrove would be very exciting.  Numbers around 40% are expectable.

It's become a fetish lately- begun by the Obama crowd- to talk about pollings only in terms of the difference between the two support numbers given.  The conceit to that is that the Undecideds are truly neutral or can be expected to split 50:50.  Which is actually rarely the case.  Usually they split 60:40 or more- even 90:10- one way, and the trick is always about recognizing which way that is.

Re: MS-Sen: Internal Poll SHOCKER (none / 0)

If memory serves correctly (caveat: it does less and less everyday)

In the beginning:  Colorado, New Mexico, Virginia, New Hamshire.

Shortly thereafter:  Oregon, Minnesota, Maine, Alaska

And now:  Texas, North Carolina, Nebraska, and Mississippi.

Idaho? (Larry Craig is still using the men's room at the capitol).

How do we get the two Wyoming senate seats in play?  Now that would be something to behold.

My dream: Pick up enough seats to fillibuster proof the senate and still have enough to spare to run Leiberman out of the party.

The '10 election is full of ripe targets- Democrats should clear 60 seats easily if '08 doesn't do it, and even put getting 67 in danger.

Minnesota is still sketchy (none / 0)

Some of the Republican smear tactics are sticking to Franken, but I think he can pull it together and win with a good debate performance.

Re: MS-Sen: Internal Poll SHOCKER (none / 0)

I thought I read that Kos has a poll about to come out on this race, so we may have some follow-up in the very near future.

by alphaaqua on Tue May 20, 2008 at 04:34:20 PM EST

It seems possible with increased AA turnout... (none / 0)

but it doesn't seem likely.  Although Wicker looks like an idiot.

This would be awesome (none / 0)

though I am patient and will wait for more polling data (to make a beautiful line) before I get too excited.

Patience people, the republicans still have a few tools in their tool box and until we show they won't work we shouldn't get too ecstatic...

That said...
