Electoral maps put together by the consulting firm helmed by Karl Rove, and obtained by ABC News, show Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, to be a stronger general election candidate in a hypothetical general election match-up against Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., than Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois.

Of special interest in the link, check out the two charts showing polling trends, and you'll see that Hillary Clinton is the ONE candidate of all three who has had signficiant momentum from March through May.

Charlie Crist is the governor of Florida.

Gerrymandering is the process of manipulating the shape of voting precincts in order to influence an election. It's possible to redraw the map in order to favor certain parties based on the historical voting records in each area.

I don't think this is likely to happen between now and November, though. As I understand it, it can only be done in a census year, so if Crist wanted to gerrymander he'd have to wait till 2010 to do it. If he's still Governor then.

How do you gerrymander a Presidential race? Unless they're going to increase the size of Florida to give it more population, which would increase it's electoral votes, I don't think you can.

Obama has been the longshot candidate this entire primary season. The key is campaigning as if you're 10 points down no matter what the polls look like.

I don't find myself overwhelmed with confidence by the projections Rove is doing, especially without any actually back end numbers to support his claims.

A lot of those states he's giving McCain at 4-5% I expect to see in Obama's column at the end of the night November 5th.

Btw, they tried to run against Obama twice already and it failed twice. Where? In congressional seats, even in super strong hasn't-gone-democrat-in-40-years strong districts. And they still lost decisive elections.

And their fundraising has been anemic.

No, the only one they feel can save them at this point is Hillary Clinton because the Clinton brand, fairly or not, brings out the republican base.

Finally there are a number of maps showing either Dem candidate capable of winning the GE Obama puts different states into the mix while Hillary's is a more conventional scenario.

I hate Karl Rove as much as the next guy, but what he's doing here isn't much different than what all sorts of other sites do.

For the vast majority of the time period he has tracked, Obama was shown as a much better bet. This changed around PA.

So what are you conspiracy theorists really arguing? Did he initially portray Obama as the tougher opponent because he wanted to go against Obama and now, post Wright, is portraying Clinton as the tougher opponent because he wants to go against her? That makes a lot of sense.

Occam's Razor: Its just another political consulting firm doing the same kind of analysis as a million others, and that analysis now suggests that Clinton might be slightly tougher.

It doesn't make sense, but that's also not what he's doing. He knows full well that the republicans are going to go up against Obama, he also knows full well that there is a faction in the democratic party that supports Clinton fanatically and the more "evidence" they see that Clinton should be the nominee the harder it will be to reconcile with them in the GE when Obama is the nominee.

Plays like this are what inspired the coining of the phrase "Rovian".

The firm has been averaging poll data and coloring in states according to a formula they established in late February. Its not that complicated.

He of all people should have known for a long time that Obama was the likely nominee. If their intent was purely to manipulate the data in way to drive divisions in the Democratic Party, why would they have spent most of this time predicting that Obama was also the stronger candidate in the general?

to be dissatisfied about how the nomination has turned out or to decide that we are reluctant to back Obama. Some of the divisions revealed in this primary have roots that far predate Karl Rove's arrival on the political scene (The 1952, 1956, and 1972 elections, for example).

Rove's electoral estimates are relatively consistent with electoral maps that have been provided by other outlets. I see nothing in them that I haven't seen before.

He is first and foremost a political strategist and analyst and second a Republican. Like Michael Barone, he is clearly a partisan (and a ruthless one when hired), but his job now is as an analyst and when I have watched him he has shown why he is consulted.

I love how people with no clue how the political process in this country works eat up things like this. Karl Rove is a republican operative and this whole primary season he's been trying his hardest to sow the seeds of dissent in the democratic party. Of course he is going to come out and throw more fuel onto the blazing pyre of pseudo-feminist vitriol towards Obama for "stealing" their election (because you know, if Clinton were to ever lose an election it could only possibly be because of sexist thieves).

Rove, Buchanan, Morning Joe, and every other Republican seem to be rooting for Hillary. I would not take my political advice from any of them. They have been gearing up to run against her since 2004. The Republicans do not have our best interests at heart. After all, Karl Rove has "the" math.

Still it is not to early to start a serious discussion about the electoral college and the electoral map.

First off i dont beleive that either Clinton or BO would or could lose MI. No way. And come on like McCain is going to beat BO in WI. I have been to Madison and it may be the most liberal city in the USA.

But there is a difference between HRC and BO. HRC would have won OH and it 20 electoral votes and would have lost big in CO. BO on the other hand IMHO is not going to win OH but could and must win CO. That imho is the big tuna of the election in Nov.

CO and is 9 electoral votes. And one last thing. If you add all the electoral votes from states that Gore won and add CO's 9 votes that gets you too 269 i think that a real possibility. Thomas Jefferson ring a bell?
