On recing diaries

On recommend diaries, or the lack there of. At the beginning of the year or thereabouts, the ability to recommend a diary was tied to the ability to rate a comment. Through the abuse of ratings -- troll rating comments that are not against the guidelines -- users lose their ability to rate, and therefore, they lose the ability to recommend diaries.

Also, when you are a "new user" you don't have the ability.

Re: On recing diaries (2.00 / 3)

Jerome,

That sound fair, except I have never TR'd a single diary ever.

You all have access to our history I assume, so if I'm wrong by all means say so but I'm quite confident I have never TR'ed anyone or broken any other TOS rule.

Not Diary (2.00 / 2)

I meant to say I have never TR'd a single post ever.

Never insulted another poster
Never insulted a candidate
Never spammed a diary

The issue is something beyond TR caused loss of recommend ability.

We know, but it's a selectively enforced rule.

Almost everyone abuses the TR function from time to time.  Obama supporters are always operating as if they were on their last warning.  Others are given leniency.

Re: On recing diaries (2.00 / 1)

See what's happening here? None of the substantive issues are being answered. Some people are having their ratings restored downthread, and go compliant and gushy. Yet they will continue to live in fear. Screw this for a progressive blog. I don't want my rec or ratings restored in this quisling fashion. You've been a stalwart George, and stuck up for other people rather just than for yourself. You're an example to us all, the kind of guy I would want my kids to emulate. So onward and upward, and here's to Obama's victory in November. With people like you supporting him, he'll have no problem. If you don't see me around here again, you'll still have my unseen support

Same here.  Thanks for carrying the flag.  I've just been lucking since my rec/rate privs were unceremoniously removed.  Must have offended someone big.  I'm usually quiet.  Was a TU for a while.  Kind of remember HRing some of the more nasty Hillary supporters' comments.  Tried talking to several admins, but I'm not important enought to be talked to.

Tis ok, though.  It will be a good campaign over the summer and fall.  Looking forward to commanding majorities in the House and Senate, and a nice White House of Obama and whomever he chooses.

Guess I HR'd someone that I shouldn't have (wish I knew who/how/why, but no admin will talk to me). Have a positive thought instead.

Re: On recing diaries (2.00 / 1)

Numerous people have lost the ability to rate and recommend despite hardly ever handing out troll-ratings.  In fact, most of them lost it the day Bob Johnson's diary was removed from the rec list, contrary to your claim that it is done on an individual basis depending on how the user rates other people's posts.

There are some serial TR abusers here who skate by.  You can tell who they are because every comment they zero-rate gets rescued by several other people.

Re: Who is Bob Johnson? (none / 0)

Thank you.  At the risk of opening a can of worms, would it be possible to summarize what the diary was about?  It's piqued my curiosity since I've seen so many references to it.

Also, if you wouldn't mind helping me fill in another information gap...

I wasn't reading blogs earlier this year.  Dailykos was not a place I was reading regularly anymore and it took me a while to get used to other more balances blogs (this one being my favorite).  On youtube, I was doing a search one day for campaign related stuff and saw that Larry Sinclar video.  I read an article that it made mainstream media in Puerto Rico but not in America.

I've never seen any refernece to it on any blogs and am wondering if it's been thoroughly debunked while I wasn't reading blogs.  I'm not sure whether it's something people aren't aware of or whether it's something that caused an uproar and then was discredited.

Thanks for the feedback so far. :-)

You can still read the two Bob Johnson diaries in question. The first one:

Clinton backers behind deceptive robo-calls aimed at blacks

That one made the rec list and then was knocked off. Then he did a second one:

TPM on deceptive robo-call story

I didn't actually know the banning had taken place until later.

And I have been critical of this site when it is deserved.  I have acted no different here than at Kos or Talk Left.  So... let's do the tally.  Jeralyn banned me because I disagreed with her posting a Rove attack on Obama (without comment and with implicit agreement); MyDD took away me ability to rate a couple of months ago; DailyKos has allowed me to speak freely and rec posts and diaries.

Let me commenting history at all three places be the judge.

Re: On recing diaries (2.00 / 1)

Well, for one thing, I have no reason to rec a diary that calls out Jerome/Todd/whomever (I don't think Obama supporters have a problem with Jonathan) because I've been unaffected by all the things other people are complaining about. A lot of those diaries also have a pretty harsh tone, too, and I no longer rec anything that isn't positive about Democrats, informative, or full of GOP-bashing.

And I know it sucks for people to have to be so careful about what they recommend, but I'm not inclined to buck the system. It's Jerome's site, so he can do what he wants. I do wish, however, that he was a little more transparent about it -- like, if you lose your ability to rate/rec, I think you ought to know why. And I think you should also know when/if you'd be getting your privileges back.

Re: On recing diaries (2.00 / 3)

Sricki.I never even had a warning. And as a Hillary supporter, have I ever struck you as an abusive Obama supporter? And yet I've now talked to a dozen overt McCain supporters who have the ability to troll and hiderate me, and I have no such powers. This is not about troll abuse or intemperate comments. A larger principle is at stake - and on that principle I'd wager, the legitimacy and reputation of MYDD.

Noone who comes here wants the group think of Dailykos. They thrive on dissent and reasoned argument. But if that dissent is fixed, if the vote is rigged, and one side - and it is predominantly one side - selectively disenfranchised, then the whole principle of direct democracy collapses.

It's a storm in a tea cup. It's a meta issue. But it's also a fundamental principle, and the general wrongness of what has happened is deterring many from this famous site.

In the short term, there might be more site traffic. People love watching a car crash. In the longer term, it's a disaster, the possibility of understanding alternative points of view, of having the kind of mind opening dialogue we have had, will be lost.

I'm happy to be called a whiner in defence of that.

Re: On recing diaries (2.00 / 1)

I've never seen you say anything rude or disrespectful. No one who behaves the way you do should be penalized, especially since you've gone out of your way to (re)build bridges with Hillary supporters.

I do think there are some people Jerome should ban. I'm sure we'd all love to submit a list to him. We have racists and Republicans running around here, and some of them get HR'd all the time (yet nothing happens to them). He banned some of the worst offenders awhile back, but it wasn't nearly enough -- I bet a lot of them are coming back under new user names, though.

At the risk of being banned myself, I'll go ahead and say that I think there's a clear bias, and I'd like to see that change. Some people I really liked have either been banned, or have left on their own because they felt they'd been treated unfairly. I don't want Obama supporters to leave. There's nowhere else to talk to them (as a Clinton person). The environment is still toxic at dKos, so I stay out of candidate diaries when I'm there, and I never mention who I'm supporting. Hillaryis44 and NoQuarter are full of racists and lunatics, so this is really the only place where both sides can talk.

I do hope Jerome displays a bit more leniency toward Obama supporters. The fact that I can find plenty of reasonable people who are backing Obama (but not nearly enough of them to overwhelm me they way they do at dKos) is the main reason I come here. If I wanted to, I could safely spend all my time at the Great Orange Satan as long as I didn't mention Hillary, but I'd really rather be here. I like the fact that it's smaller, and I like the diversity of viewpoints on the election. And if Obama supporters didn't feel like they were walking on eggshells, site traffic would increase, which would be good for Jerome as well as the community at large.

And Bill Clinton and the Clinton campaign and its surrogates and supporters want to claim that the Obama campaign is "playing the race card?"

While Clinton backers are trying to disenfranchise black voters?

How did you read it?

Re: On recing diaries (none / 0)

Where's the rest of it? Playing the race card, as I've said countless times defending the Clintons, does not a racist make. And why single out Bob Johnson's diary for some kind of smear attack, when it was backed up by links with creditable newsagencies. I don't believe the allegations, but I'm not such an idiot not to need my own mind made up for me. Bob is a difficult, truculent writer, but he abides by the source rules. And remember EVERY OTHER rec list diary was accusing Obama of playing the race card, most sourced from candidate websites rather than news sources.

I don't want to go back over that particular issue, which is actually connected to some more complex commercial factors. The principle of 'letting us make our own minds up' and 'calling out the diarist ourselves' is what is a stake. To attack that diary in this context is a bit like saying, while watching people burning copies of Satanic Verses, well, it was a crap novel really. How do we know it's crap if it's burnt to cinders.

Re: On recing diaries (2.00 / 0)

I didn't say Bob deserved to be banned for it, or that people who recommended it deserved to be punished. Nor did I even say that it should have been removed from the rec list. I just pointed out which diary it was because someone asked. And I wasn't smearing him--

Wait, are you talking about what I said or what Jerome did? In any case, I wasn't trying to smear him, I was just saying that the diary implied (and at one point explicitly said) that people in the Clinton campaign were intentionally disenfranchising African Americans. And I linked to the rest of it in my comment above. You're right, people don't need others to make their minds up for them. I don't know why Jerome removed it from the list, and I don't think the people who recommended it should have had their rec/rating abilities taken away. And yes, there was a lot of unsourced crap on the list which should have been removed (there usually is), and Bob's diary was obviously singled out.

You sound really angry. Are you mad at me or at the admins? I certainly didn't intend to offend anyone. I've said before that the site lost a valuable asset when Bob was banned.

I was at home farming when that diary went up.

I think it was over the line.

WVWV was a good 'guy' (using guy in the figurative sense here) back in 2006 getting people to vote, over on Dkos Adam B got specific questions answered by WVWV and in my opinion they were just incompetent.  They aren't an arm of some shadowy Clinton organization.  Obama has ties to the board too.  I know I've been chided about linking their due to its sexism, but over at Chris Bower's site there is a good defense of WVWV.

I'm not sure why Jerome reacted the way he did to that diary. Some people on dKos were trying to link him to that group. I have no idea whether he has anything to do with them, though. I'm pretty sure it was ultimately established that all of that was a mistake, and certainly not intended to specifically disenfranchise AAs.

Such a graphic example of breaking the guidlines one could not imagine.

And yet I'm the one who is penalised. And McCain supporters go unpunished.

I can rate and recommend (2.00 / 1)

sometimes I cannot rate though. I'm not a 100% sure but it might be a computer issue as opposed to a site issue. Last night I ended up logging out (on firefox). Tried to go back to mydd, but got nothing. Blank page. Cleared cache and history. Still nothing. Ctrl F5. Nothing. So, much to my dismay, I logged in using IE, and there it was, I had my rating capability back.

This site has some caching issues is what I figured.

Now question, can someone "over-mojo"? As in, if you mojo a lot, does it hurt?

Re: On recing diaries (2.00 / 7)

Jerome

You know what happened two weeks ago. You banned a dozen people including Bob Johnson, and then removed the reccing powers of many more. The majority had not abused the site guidelines but had merely recced his and Mumphrey's diaries which you bounced from the rec list.

It's so transparent that you do yourself more favours by admitting it, than pretending it had to do with trolling or hide rating. If that was the case, then these people who would turned up as trollers in the hidden comments section. But it was an entirely different cross section of the MYDD populace.

So fair is fair. It has been a difficult time, and I can understand you need to make sure the site wasn't swarmed by the blogosphere majority of Obama supporters.

But in the process you deprived the reccing powers of some long term users, and its an insult to their intelligence and their contribution to your site not either to:

a) Just restore those powers and help MYDD to restore its natural equilibrium now that the primary flame wars are nearly over

or

b) Just admit that this is no longer a community, with bottom up powers of self regulation and promotion, but a top down editorialised blog, answering to the agenda of its owner.

I'm actually hoping this is a temporary aberration, and that you will actually big big enough to go with option a). I think you'll find a lot of the vitriol towards you and this site will disappear.

But there may be other issues at work, and I don't rule out b)

Re: On recing diaries (2.00 / 2)

Through the abuse of ratings -- troll rating comments that are not against the guidelines -- users lose their ability to rate, and therefore, they lose the ability to recommend diaries.

Would the same hold true for up-rating a comment that was against the guidelines?  Cause I see that constantly.

Lost rate and rec for issuing a '1' to a trollish comment. The troll, not so much.
