But they take more work (2.00 / 3)

and I post them so rapidly that I get the post rate exceeded warning.  This is a simple oneshot deal and is creative.

I don't get it (2.00 / 1)

There are a lot of Hillary supporters who are quietly accepting that Barack will be the nominee, although Hillary's win on Tuesday and her speech was a big morale boost to supporters (like me).

One of the genuine problems I have with Obama is his electoral strategy.  If we're going to win in the fall, we can't be ostriches and pretend that swing voters in swing states will magically come around and vote for us.

Does it bother me that our party's presumptive candidate is particularly vulnerable to slurs based on religion, "values," and patriotism?  Yes.

Does it bother me that our party's presumptive candidate seems to have no chance of winning Ohio and Florida?  Yes.

You are exaggerating some there (2.00 / 2)

Obama is slightly behind in Ohio, Real Clear Politics shows him down by 3.4% (just outside the margin of error).  Pollster has him down 1.2%, the most recent poll had him down 1%.  He has a very good chance to win there as the macro trends are against the republicans this year.  Also when McCain starts to get hammered on his positions I expect the numbers to around an average of a 2 pt

Obama lead (yes this is closer than it would be with Sen. Clinton)

I grant that he is unlike to win in Florida, but with his demographic appeal he doesn't need to, he has a path to victory that doesn't include Florida.

The republicans will find something to slur our candidate on, it is really all they have left to have any chance of winning.  The strategy is weak though as Childers managed to overcome Obama's 'toxicity' in MS-01, same thing happened in LA-06, and in NC the GOP fearmongering about Obama didn't impact that race either.  A few weeks ago people were overly concerned about Obama (I think a top rec list writer wrote something to the effect of they can't wait to run against him and put out Childers and the NC GOP ad as examples [they completely forgot that Freedoms Watch was running ads against Don C. for being close to Obama).  In every case the fear card lost, to channel Carville, "They republicans will try to run on this [he was referring to Bill's problems that sprang up] while they don't offer any real solutions, if we knock this back this time we can stop this, but we have to knock this back"  as I said somewhere else on this blog, if we can show that using issues like religion, ethinicity, gender or patriotism won't fly, we can take another tool from the republican tool belt.

Based on demogrpahics, Obama is more likely than not to win in: ME, VT, MA, RI, MA, NT, PA, NJ, DE, MD, DC, MI, WI, IA, MN, IL, CO, NM, NV, CA, OR, WA, HI.

That combination gives him 274 electoral votes.  He has a chance to poach these states OH, IN, NC, VA, maybe ND.

Also this doesn't figure in NE where electoral votes are split and we have a credible down ballot candidate in Scott Kleeb would would ahve won in 2006 based on his performance in the most republican part of the state.  Also Obama runs really well in a place like Omaha (the base of CD-02).  If Obama wins one CD in NE that means he can afford to lose five votes off his total or one of the following:  ME, NM, NV, DE.

I am not saying that it will be easy, but I am saying to wait a month until you start shouting doom about his electoral chances.  After all in June of 2000 51% of McCain backers siad they'd vote for Bush, I can't imagine your choice has been easy (I was originally for Edwards, it was not easy to move into Obama's camp) or fun, but I definately respect the fact you made it.

My disdain goes for those who won't support Obama for the reasons you listed.

Hmmm (none / 0)

Whatever disagreements people have on the electoral map, there should be no fiat that aims to silence issues raised and disparage them as the nefarious vomits of a "concern troll."

Dialogue, dialogue, dialogue.

We should be talking about race.  We should be talking about class.  We should be talking about honesty in our candidates and opponents' candidates, whether that be Bushisms, McCainisms, "I didn't inhale," fantastical stories about sniper fire, "I wasn't in church that day," and so forth.

I disagree on Ohio.  Polls months before an election give us some slight indicator of where things may stand but this early in the game, more reliable indicators are the states' county-by-county returns in previous elections, in primaries, and in what we know about demographics and local concerns/flavors.

I follow Hillary until she concedes and frankly I am not a fan of Obama's personality, but as I've said before, if McCain risks lives in Iraq and punishing a generation with right wing federal judges, he must be opposed, regardless of whatever selfish distaste I have for the candidate (a distaste I reserve the right to express).

That said, when Obama is the definitive nominee, I become a generic Dem again and think only in terms of opposing the GOP.  When I look at the path to 270, I know it will disturb me to know end that we have to either throw in the towel in Ohio or waste millions there that could otherwise be spent elsewhere.  It's going to annoy me to see Pennsylvania as a major battleground state and money/time sinkhole when Hillary could take this state by 8 points without spending a dime.  It's going to annoy me to see Florida called for McCain as soon as the polls close.  Likewise for Missouri, West Virginia, and Arkansas which we must flat out concede to be realistic.  (Missouri being about 5% redder than Ohio and for the same cultural "small town" reasons).

I see Obama giving us a superfluous advantage in the Pacific Northwest, Illinois, and Hawaii that we don't really need.  I also see him closing but not bridging the gap in Virginia and North Carolina.  The map doesn't care whether you bring Virginia down to an unprecedented small 4% GOP win... a win is a win.

His only legitimate advantages in my opinion are in Colorado, Iowa, Michigan, and Wisconsin.

I am decidedly not happy about putting half of the Northeast in play (PA, DE, NJ, NH, MA[?]), and squandering huge advantages in Ohio, Florida, West Virginia, Arkansas, and Missouri for the sake of capturing Colorado's 9 EV's (5 if they split them) and Iowa's 7.

Keep in mind that whatever gains made in the NE CD must also be considered in light of the disadvantages in ME's CD's.  If I recall correctly, 1 of the districts was very close in 2004.

In sum, it looks like Obama needs a perfect storm of every link in his EV chain aligning properly while Hillary has a lot more latitude to absorb a few losses.

Hey SG (none / 0)

I am not a republican, or a troll... but I do have 2 major issue based concerns with Sen. Obama (one of them applied to Sen. Clinton as well).

(a) He is promising a defeat (aka a pullout) in Iraq, which is contrasted with Sen. McCain's promise of victory by 2013.  (This issue applies to Sen. Clinton as well).  I know this is not how Democrats like to frame it, but it is the way I see it... and I suspect Sen. McCain will have a lot of success with that line.

(b) I cannot support anyone who wants to increase the SS Cap.

Seven (none / 0)

You have shown rationality, I am referring to people who use bogus arguments like the state candidate X wins can never be won by candidate Y (see Steve464's diary near the top of the recent diaries list) when I say concerned, or those who say, I'm voting McCain because Obama can't win ever (that is showing "Concern"

To answer your first point, people are sick of the war, polling shows that a majority of the american people want our troops to come home.  McCain can and will be hammered with his 100 years in Iraq line and get hit as a flip-flopper (something he already shows some susceptibility too [31% of the american people think he is a flip-flopper]).  With the democrats money advantage he will get slammed on that again and again.

Point two, don't say you are voting for McCain the diary is aimed at people who say that or spout illogic in defense of fear.

I don't really have a problem with people voting 3rd party.  It is voting against principle for the other major party that I can't stand.

Re: Seven (none / 0)

I will probably abstain.. I do not like any of the 3rd party options either !

I do not believe that McCain promised 100 years of war.  And I know that people are sick of the war...but they are also not willing to accept defeat (and watch OBL celebrate on CNN).  Hence, McCains promise of victory by 2013 might have traction...depending on how he sells it.

Hey SG some online exam questions for you (2.00 / 1)

If you can answer then you're all set! :)

1) Which of the following is not a gram-negative bug?
a)Clostridium perfringens
b)Vibrio cholerae
c) Escherichia coli
d) Bordetella pertussis

2)Which of the following is not true related to endotoxins?
a)Endotoxins are secreted from cells.
b)Can be linked to Meningococcemia
c)Produced by gram negative microorganisms
d) Can cause fever

by louisprandtl on Thu May 15, 2008 at 11:33:38 PM EST

I can do this though I prefer pathology to micro (2.00 / 1)

1)
Vibrio is G(-) so is Escherichia. As is Bordetella

The answer to 1 is A as clostidium tentani is a Gram positive bug and it is in the same genus as A.

A also is a cause of gas gangrene, and can be knocked out with something like Vancomycin.

2)
endotoxin is LPS which is produced by G(-) bacteria, a person can go into shock from the TR-4 pathway which releases tumor necrosis factor alpha which causes a lowering of blood pressure and fever, since Meningococcemia must refer to bacteria that can causes meningitis, E coli can cause it and has LPS as it is G(-)

Therefore A is correct, LPS isn't secreted per say it is part of the outer cell membrane (gram negative bacteria have an inner and out cell membrane).

Excellent. You get an A+.. (none / 0)

Wish you all the best in your residency. Hope you get your first choice.

BTW I've no clue about the answers as have little or no knowledge of medical and bio-sciences...plus
I'm a low information supporter of you know who..;)

I am not there yet (2.00 / 1)

I think you misunderstood me when I said I am studying, I just finished first year so I am using the summer lull to study for the boards.

Here let me rephrase them as explaining is a key part:

For question one the thing was asking about the two classes of bacteria (there are a few odd balls that don't belong in either), which is based on the outer part of the bacteria.  Gram Negative and Gram Positive have different methods of attack (Gram negatives have a little piece that is a fat that is very immunogenic.  Gram positives have a protein outer part that is immunogenic.

E. Coli very common bacteria, Vibrio cholera is a huge cause of cholera (due to a toxin it produces).  Bordella Pertussis is the cause of pertussis or the P in the DTap vaccine which also includes Diptheria and Tentanus.

For question 2:
Asked about the little fat that gram negative bacteria produce.
