Hillary's Response to Chimpy's Nazi Smear

UPDATE: 4:20 PM EDT

According to Todd, on the front page, Hillary has finally issued a denouement of Bush's smear.

This begs the question: why did it take Howard Wolfson 8 hours to respond? After all, Wolfson is the best flak in the business, and the Clintons are famed for inventing the rapid response in 1992. Yet, they were the last Dems to respond, not the first.

After all, would Wolfson have waited all day, if Bush and McSame had attacked Chelsea? Of course not.

Shameful.

Let's be real, they only issued this tardy response because of the forming blogswarm.

Shameful.

RAPID CITY, S.D. (NY Times) - After a day spent doggedly campaigning and talking only of her agricultural agenda, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton held an impromptu news conference on a windy airport tarmac today to criticize President Bush and Senator John McCain.

Until the hastily arranged news conference, Mrs. Clinton had spent most of her day ignoring the political firestorms that had erupted over Mr. Bush and Mr. McCain’s remarks.

She declined to take questions from reporters as she made idle chit chat on her campaign plane this morning.

And while the rest of the political world squabbled over foreign policy, Mrs. Clinton took her struggling presidential campaign bumping over dusty, dirt roads in South Dakota for a speech focusing solely on her farm agenda.

Only after arriving in Rapid City for a refueling stop did Mrs. Clinton briefly address reporters, calling President Bush’s comments “offensive and outrageous.”

As a fierce Obama partisan I have to say Clinton's (none / 0)

statement was spot on and a great example of putting party before self interest. I expected her to take a parting shot at her own distinction on negotiations but she didn't and she deserves to be commended for not taking the cheap shot.

That said the general election cmapaign between Obama and McCain we'll be seen as beginning on this day, May 15, 2008.

If that is the case she needs to drop out, before American's really start to hate her.

She definitely will lose ALL Jewish support over this one.

Comparing Obama to Hitler,  if it's too hard for Hillary to attack Bush on that, how will she ever attack a republican for ANYTHING!!!

Re: Hillary's Response to Chimpy's Nazi Smear (2.00 / 14)

Hillary, today in Rapid City, South Dakota, defended Obama from President Bush's apparent comparison of him to Neville Chamberlain, Ken Vogel reports.

She told reporters:

President Bush's comparison of any Democrat to Nazi appeasers is both offensive and outrageous on the face of it, especially in light of his failures in foreign policy. This is the kind of statement that has no place in any presidential address and certainly to use an important moment like the 60th anniversary celebration of Israel to make a political point seems terribly misplaced. Unfortunately, this is what we've come to expect from President Bush.

I'm voting for Barack, but I think this is just simply unfair to Hillary and her supporters.

Please update the diary with her feedback or delete this.  This accomplishes nothing productive.

And by the way, for those who think DKos is a safe haven for this kind of stuff, the good folks with TR privileges on Kos would have had this deleted pronto and TR'd the diarist to death if this was tried there.

Well, she is still running. (none / 0)

Give her two more weeks. Ler her wind down. Give her supporters a little more time to accept reality. Josh Marshall put it best:

We seem to have arrived at an equitable compromise: Sen. Clinton is staying in the nomination race while Sen. Obama drops out to move on to the general.

I am actually happy to see that virtually every major Democrat came out against Bush hard. This is what it means to have a nominee.

I disagree (1.33 / 3)

Hillary's recalcitrance is unacceptable.

She should have responded quickly - as if her husband was being smeared.

At the time I posted this diary, she had still not made a statement.  She was silent.  And can not not be tolerated.  She's issued a statement, and I've updated the diary, yet the question stands, why the delay.

This only furthers my opinion, (once again, my opinion) that Hillary is running a 2012 campaign.

First off, Bush just made the statement today because I was watching him on CSPAN this morning (by the way, what is wrong with Laura's face?  It looked strange.  And Condi looked bored).

So Hillary made a statement about the same time as Biden and Obama and Dean anyone else who wanted to say something.

Re: how so? (2.00 / 2)

Castigating Hillary in these terms for taking a couple hours longer to issue a statement than you would have liked is just ridiculous.  It's not a race.  You're just stirring shit up, and I can't think of any good reason for it.

You are better than your posts at MyDD would suggest, Al.  You're a very funny guy and you have an unparalleled ability to energize progressives with your graphics and enthusiasm.  Since this primary is basically over, rather than spend your time berating the minority of dead-enders that populate this site, there's something a lot better you could be doing for the Democratic cause.

There are an awful lot of Clinton supporters are capable of being brought around by November, but have their back up because of the constant demonization of Hillary on the blogs and in the media.  We're past the time when the overriding goal is to fire up the Obama-supporting base by going on about how evil Hillary is.

There's only so much any one of us can do to help unify the party and elect a Democrat, but you're in a position to do more than most.  I encourage you to reflect on what purpose your posts here are serving, and to consider easing up on the throttle because it's not doing a damn thing to help put a Democrat in the White House.

I don't get this (2.00 / 1)

Obama is constantly attacked on this blog - in the diaries, in the comments, on the front page (Jerome's preener post on tuesday).  On tuesday, people posted comments demanding a floor fight at the convention and even asked Hillary to sue the DNC to overturn the seating of caucus delegates. If you endorse Obama, like NARAL, you're immediately denounced in a recommended diary.  Yet, Clinton supporter's are not able to endure any amount of scrutiny - none.  It doesn't matter what you say, or don't say.

Re: I don't get this (2.00 / 2)

I don't disagree with you, but it's important to keep your eye on the ball.

You are 100% invested in electing Barack Obama President.  I am maybe 90% invested in the same thing.  These people you're talking about are 0% invested in it.  So while their behavior is certainly destructive to the cause of party unity, their actions rationally proceed from a motivation.  They don't care about electing Barack Obama.  But you do!

Maybe it feels like everyone here is a dead-ender, but they're not, and there's a lot of people who are reachable.  But when you attack Hillary, you're not just poking a stick at the dead-enders, you're poking it at everyone who likes Hillary.

There's been a real failure to see the other guy's point of view throughout this primary, one which I hope I haven't fallen prey to.  You know, if I was a 100% Obama supporter, and I was flat-out convinced that Hillary ran a disgusting race-baiting campaign and was justifiably smacked down by the electorate for it, I wouldn't be going on about it at this point.  Winning the election is more important than attempting to convince every last Clinton supporter to accept the Obama narrative in every particular.  Please try to think about what I'm saying.

"berating the minority of dead-ender" ? (none / 0)

I berated no one here, with my post.

it was and some of your colleagues you resorted to invectives.

I don't understand - minority?  70% of this blog supporters Hillary.

"deadenders" - HA!  clinton's operatives are tough as nails - they're no softies.

"berating the minority of dead-ender" (2.00 / 1)

By "dead-enders" I mean the people who will not vote for Obama as the nominee under any circumstances.

I think they are a minority among the Clinton supporters on this site, and I don't think it's wise to alienate all the others just to make some sort of point to the dead-enders.

I'd invite you to describe to me how you feel this diary - or, in general, your incessant mocking of Hillary Clinton - advances the cause of electing Barack Obama in November.  If you have such an argument, I think it surely must rest upon some false assumptions.

Give it a rest buddy!

Taking 8 hours to respond to a nuclear missile attack on the US would be shameful.  Taking 8 hours to respond to a political smear with a comment that it was unacceptable (and arguably a better response than Obama's own response) is perfectly acceptable.

Let's stop stirring up sh*t just to stir up sh%t!

Such childish drivel (1.33 / 3)

So now Hillary's got to be Obama's rapid response team?

This "diary" is more aptly named "diarrhea".  It's one of the most immature (and that's saying a lot here) piece of crap I've seen.

I'm an obama supporter and I have to say that this diary is BS.  I think she answered forcefully and appropriately.  No matter who the nominee is, we cannot let this Bush-garbage continue to be accepted by America as "truth."

I applaud Hillary.  I especially applaud Joe Biden, though, for his remarks

Re: Hillary's Response to Chimpy's Nazi Smear (2.00 / 1)

Whatever you think of Hillary, I think it's fair to say she has a lot on her plate right now.  Her delay in responding to this is not important - that she issued a forceful denunciation IS important.

I'm no Hillary supporter, but this week she has mostly done her part to promote unity - issuing forceful rebuttals of this and the Hamas smear.  Let's positively reinforce that effort...

Re: Hillary's Response to Chimpy's Nazi Smear (2.00 / 1)

I agree.

But I wonder if Bush made this comment knowing it would test Hillary and our party's unity.

She condemned it and thats great, but if she is trying to impress superdelegates and party elders in general she should have been first.

We can all agree that if the VP spot is anything she has a remote interest in, she missed a solid opportunity to achieve that.

I want to see Hillary fighting Bush/McCain/GOP.

We need her for that fight!

She can pretend to keep her campagin till june, fine.
But she needs to be the "Fighter" she is so famous for.

Re: Hillary's Response to Chimpy's Nazi Smear (none / 0)

I think she's getting there and that she'll eventually get there.  I've thought that in the past (i.e. "I'm proud to be sitting here with Barack Obama" at that one debate) and she's disappointed me.  I like what I've seen from her this week - color me cautiously optimistic.  She's moving in the right direction - fingers crossed...

Re: Hillary's Response to Chimpy's Nazi Smear (2.00 / 1)

Well, this more hindsight, but if she was looking for a graceful exit as so many say, today the opportunity was sitting RIGHT there.

Think about it,   for her a high note is a win in Kentucky,  not a gleaming historical show of party unity.

Im just dissapointed.

If her concession doesn't breed positivity I will be really dissapointed.

Re: Hillary's Response to Chimpy's Nazi Smear (none / 0)

But she DID issue the statement and it was not qualified ... I'm fine.  I'm not expecting her to carry water for Barack at this point, although it may be a good way for her to impress Supers as you say.

She also acknowledged this week that her "white voters" comment was a mistake and hasn't gone back to that type of comment.  Seems like my bar for her is just lower than yours, but I'm happy with what I'm seeing.  I fundamentally believe that she is a good person and a good Dem who just REALLY, REALLY wanted to win.

Re: Hillary's Response to Chimpy's Nazi Smear (2.00 / 1)

Why is it incumbent on Hillary to respond first to an attack on Obama?  Do you not trust your candidate to handle his own battles?  I guess not.

BTW Biden's response was the best one out of them all.  Hillary's was better than Obama's.

I am kinda tired of the demanded responses. (none / 0)

I really don't like it comming from Obama and his supporters any more than Hillary or McCain.

Demanding the other side apologize is so tiresome.

And does it really help?
Bush looked like an asshole when he said it, and he put himself on a tee for Obama to smash.   Making it about apologies, and rejects just makes the people demanding them look stupid.

Bush making an incredibly stupid comment only helps Obama.
Demanding apologies and responses doesn't.

Can we please stop doing this?
As long as Hillary doesn't have  a negative and reinforcing response I am happy.  Even if that means she is silent.

Like the GOP attacking Michelle, don't cut short their rope by demanding apologies and responses, when they are about to hang themselves.

Al, this is ridiculous. I mean, really, you're grasping for straws here, and I think I've been pretty fair about this whole Obama winning thing, but Hillary's remarks were out in plenty of time and plenty forceful enough to get the message through.

This just sounds like more Hillary-hate...and I "know it when I see it". It's time to move past this. So please stop. It pushes people away, and we both know that Hillary denounced this.
