An Email From John Edwards - not what you think

This is one of the many reasons I still believe that we are not getting who we need for president.

It is interesting that this came out today, but it has nothing to do with the primary campaign.

Help me in North Carolina

I want to begin by thanking each of you for all of your support and commitment over the last year. It has meant so much to Elizabeth and me. We have been very busy since January working on the causes that got us into the campaign in the first place -- helping to build the One America we all believe in.

You may have heard me talk about one of those programs called College for Everyone -- a scholarship pilot project that Elizabeth and I started a few years ago in Greene County, North Carolina.

The program is based on a simple promise to students: make good grades, work at least 10 hours a week, and stay out of trouble -- and the program will help pay for your first year of college. Since we launched this effort in 2005, the percentage of Greene County high school graduates attending college has increased from 54 percent to 74 percent.

more below...

As I write you, 165 high school seniors in Greene County are set to graduate in May and 94% have been accepted into N.C. colleges and universities. Most of these young people are doing just what many of us did -- sitting around the kitchen table with their parents, wondering how they will pay for tuition.

Every parent wants to give their child the opportunity that comes with a college education. But for too many American families, the dream of a college degree is just that -- a dream. Now, I need your help to make the dream of a college education a reality for some hard-working students in rural Greene County.

That's why I need your help today -- with a tax-deductible donation of $10, $25, $50 or $75, whatever you can afford -- to bring us one step closer to our goal of College for Everyone. By contributing now, you will help fulfill the college dreams of deserving students in Greene County and show the world that if we work together on big and important issues, change is possible.

But change can only come with your help. Please contribute now and bring us closer to building One America where every child has the opportunity to go as far as his or her talents and hard work will take them.

Thank you,

John Edwards

P.S. Contributions made by Friday go towards scholarships for the students graduating in May. Please respond today.

Not much of a diary, but it is a worthy cause.

I'm confused.... (none / 0)

How does this wonderful cause and brilliant email reflect negatively on Barack Obama? How does it show that "we are not getting who we need for president"?

John and Elizabeth Edwards are wonderful and this cause will grow like crazy.

do some of you always have to try and find something that IS NOT THERE?

geeeez!

I FEEL that John Edwards IS the president WE NEED at this time! We need a fighter! We need someone who will kick ass and take names later. We need someone who will speak truth to power! WE NEED a New FDR!

That is John Edwards! ... to me.

ok?

Ahhhhhh.... I'm an idiot and I apologize. Claerly I've been swept up in the standard back-and-forth around here.

I scheduled a surgery to have my foot removed from my mouth.

I don't find it interesting at all (1.75 / 4)

he is, and probably rightly so, capitalizing on his gift to Obama.

Yup - and I unscribed to his e-mail (1.33 / 3)

AND wrote him an e-mail telling him never to send me another request for donations for any of his "causes".

He is willing to put an empty suit in as POTUS.  So I have no interest in anything he supports or says.

There's a reasonable reaction.  (TR'd for the name-calling).

even tho (2.00 / 1)

I do not support this person comment, I don't think they did any "name calling". Empty suit is nothing. It basically means no substance.

Really? (2.00 / 1)

Really? You are willing to turn your back on the wonderful work of Edwards because of John's endorsement? The friend of our enemy is our enemy? I'm sorry, but that is exactly the opposite of liberal principles.

I'm excited about the work John and Elizabeth will do.

Great diary Kevin (2.00 / 4)

and this is exemplifies why I settled on Edwards back last November.

He isn't pushing his new org (though it is worthy), he isn't wanting people to donate money to Obama, he is wanting to help out those who are are struggling for a hand-up in the world.

Recced.

I honestly don't know what happened (2.00 / 3)

sigh  on Tracy Russo's blog at Rural Votes I commented that in a different world Obama's and Edward's roles would have been reserved right now.  I would have liked to see the good that got done in that world...

I hope his new initative (Half in 10) is more successful than Al Gore on Climate change.

An Email From John Edwards (2.00 / 1)

Do you think an offer of support for this cause from Obama was part of the decision to endorse today?  Not that there is anything wrong with that, but I am curious.

Re: An Email From John Edwards (2.00 / 3)

Possibly so. Politics IS all about a little give and take.

All tho in 2009, I want the Democrats to take their collective knee and put it into the necks of the rethugs while they squirm on the ground, then tell them to shut the fuck up... because We Have WORK TO DO you little assholes!   :)

Do you think that would be a little strong?   ;)

Re: An Email From John Edwards - not what you thin (2.00 / 3)

The democratic party is bigger today because Edwards is following his agenda, in collaboration with the presumptive nominee.

The past is past. Hillary supporters, she would be great working for the party on something EVEN BIGGER.

Let's find a way to work together

Re: No thank you. (2.00 / 3)

You think you're speaking for Hillary?

I think we already established the other day you're not going to vote democratic.

It's a free country. I don't criticise you for it.

But Hillary will vote democratic, and work for the party.

I adore Edwards so much that I (2.00 / 1)

Re: An Email From John Edwards - not what you thin (none / 0)

i  sent to Edwards money before he dropped out. Than he endorsed a loser.
Than I got his email.
My respond i sent today is simple - your cause is good but after yesterday I cannot trust you anymore so please return my money, please do not ask me for more money, I will not send you money anymore and please remove me from your database and mailing list.
I learned hard way and damage you did by endorsing Obama is not something I can tolerate. Bye, bye, sunny boy.

A question for your gut (none / 0)

Between Hillary and Barack, who do you think connects more effectively with the kinds of voters John Edwards claims to champion in his two-Americas schtick?

If you're still having trouble answering this question, pore over the election data and exit polls.  Who do you think the "left-behinds" believe to be their more effective champion?

Then ask yourself why Edwards is endorsing Obama instead.  It is nothing short of BETRAYAL to those who he claims to represent.
