Transference No Worky (none / 0)

Commitment to middle-class issues does not work by transference. You can't just have some surrogate stand up, endorse you and assume all of his work in an area is going to rub off on you.

Sorry, Barack.

Re: He might have had some leverage (2.00 / 1)

Although I disagree with the tone, but what would be the problem if your overall point were correct? I take this endorsement's rationale to be about the same as NARAL's: the race is winding down, the math shows who will be the nominee, so let's unify behind him.

It doesn't even have to mean that he's always agreed with Obama. He held out while the nomination was still in doubt, but at this point, there's really no reason supers or other prominent uncommitted Dems should still be on the fence--that's true even if they're for Hillary.

Re: He might have had some leverage (none / 0)

If Hillary wants to influence Barack's healthcare plan, she has just one bargaining chip left.  She'd better hurry though as time is running out quickly. If she knew what she was doing she'd have figured that out in mid february.  Instead she is holding out as her leverage disappears completely and she becomes a pariah.

Smooth.

what do you think the vote would have been in WV had Hillary Clinton dropped out before WV?

Would Edwards have won? He got 7.3% of the vote? Would Obama still have come in second to a candidate that was not running?

Obama is OK with Hillary still in the race, so why does it bug so many of you?

She is NOT destroying or ruining the party. This is what talk radio and some on TV and the blogs keep pushing and it is that kind of crap that is hurting the party. This is the same thing the rightie talk radio and faux news have been doing and are still doing to mccain.

There are more people participating in the process than ever before and more people voting in every state than ever before. This includes both Barack and Hillary supporters! The amount of votes they have both gotten in almost 50/50 and the totals together are simply AMAZING for the primaries! This is a GOOD thing!

Re: Get this... (2.00 / 1)

I agree that she is no longer hurting anything by staying in the race.  It's irrational, but harmless.  My problem is that I don't trust her to stop functioning as a McCain surrogate.  I acknowledge that for a short period of time she has refrained from that, but I don't trust her to stick with that policy and I have lost all respect for her because this Michigan and Florida shit is just despicable to me.  It offends my sense of fair play and decency to a degree that I went from a person who used to defend and admire her to a feeling of deep betrayal when she stooped to such intellectually insulting attempts to claim the nomination through foul play that we democrats aren't supposed to engage in.

A fair democracy is sacred to me.  I used to think that it was sacred to most democratic voters.  It's part of why we believe what we do.  Now I am not so sure.  These states broke the rules.  People can pretend that it was the republicans that did it in Florida, but we've seen the video of democrats on the floor of the Florida legislature mocking the DNC as it was happening.  What they were mocking was a very fair warning from Dr. Dean.  Even after they did it Dr. Dean offered them a chance to turn back from the transgression.  They refused.  Hillary's staff had a hand in drafting the agreement that the contests wouldn't count and then, along with the other candidates, agreed to it.  Dr. Dean could not have been more fair.

The rules for the nomination process for this year were known and agreed to before the voting started.  Any competitor, in any competition who does not compete within the rules is cheating.  In this case it is cheating the democracy that is sacred to me.  Just like W did.  I was appalled when I learned she would do such a thing.  Then she starts talking about popular vote even though another of the rules is that the nomination process is a contest measured in delegates.  Deliberate, dishonor again.

It's a good thing if she can have some class about it.  The organization building alone is an asset for the party in each state.  I agree.  It is also perfect timing for this to happen now if we're going to get serious about a 50 state strategy from here on in.  Really I get it.  I just don't trust her.  As long as she is in I am waiting for the other shoe to drop.  She's already crossed the line several times so far.  That placing McCain above Obama shit was a betrayal of the party to me.  I have just watched her take the low road so many times...

Re: Get this... (none / 0)

If you believe that following petty rules that have shown to be obsolete trumps disenfranchising million of voters then you have a really distorted view about what a democracy is about.

Sacred rules? that is the viewpoint of authoritharian dictatorships. As I read your comment I won't trust you judgement related with anything involving democracy. I hold your view point to the most extreme contempt possible. It's a moral abomination.

And I say that as an Obama supporter.

Talk to the DNC about that.... (none / 0)

and the folks in Florida and Michigan who decided to shoot craps with the votes of their people by moving up the primary dates.

Obama didn't make up the rules, he just followed them.  Nobody should expect him to undermine his own supporters, and override the rules against his own self-interest.  That's not altruistic, it's stupid, and disloyal to those who are contributing to his campaign.

And if Hillary was so damned interested in giving these delegations a place at the table, she would have accepted the Michigan compromise.  Only that wouldn't have been in her own perceived self-interest--so naturally, she didn't.

I don't really blame Hillary much on this--except for raising the whole "disenfranchising" flag.  That decision was made by the legislators of Michigan and Florida, not Obama. To say that Obama should accept these delegations is the same logic that held that Gore should yield the Presidency in 2000, and Kerry shouldn't contest the Ohio results in 2004.  Haven't we had enough of that sort of thinking already?

Re: Talk to the DNC about that.... (none / 0)

Are you serious?

I blame both  state parties in question, the national party, the obama campaign, the clinton campaign and the people who keep posting those diatribes how those states shouldn't count "for the sake of the rules" and that the voters should be left out in the cold "so they'll take it up with their representatives" especially since those very rules allow them to migate the penalties to something more fitting

When millions of voters don't get to have a say it's disenfranchisement. That is not something that's up for discussion.

All parties have been bad in this so I'm not blaming Obama more then the rest or anything. In fact I'm supporting Obama because I believe he would be the most legitimate candidate according to the metrics.

And no, Gore's and Kerry's case were both different from each other and different from FL and MI now.

I said democracy is sacred to me.  I have studied democracy from it's roots (Pericles, Socrates' writings on political philosophy) on through John Locke to Jefferson, Madison, Adams, Franklin, et al on up through law in present day america with my father who is a retired professor of constitutional law.  My position is closer to Obama's and to Dr. Dean's that yours.  You are mistaken.

I do think that Michigan and Florida will get something (even though they shouldn't) because it's expedient for Obama and Dean to do so, but the farcical january beauty contests will not go to conference as is.  As for disenfranchisement, Obama wins Michigan.  Hillary loses it. Clearly they're not as upset about it as you.

I thought about this earlier today.  I bet there is a correlation between men (and maybe women?) who find Tina Fey attractive and their choice for president.  I'm going to guess that Obama supporters tend to find Tina Fey attractive whereas Clinton supporters do not.

I remember a few years back there was some fluff piece on Tina Fey in the Washington Post and they opened up the article to comments.  There was practically open warfare between those who thought she was attractive versus those that didn't.  It got extremely personal and people's motivations for liking the way she looked was under heavy suspicion in some quarters.  It was really very interesting.

Re: Oh, make up your mind (none / 0)

There's no contradiction.  We know HRC is a liberal who makes her appeals to the range of moderates without being one.

Obama has centrist/conservative instincts, makes appeals to liberals without really being one, and is the candidate of the centrist/conservatives in the Party.  His major endorsers are Jimmy Carter, John Edwards, Bill Richardson, John Kerry.

Ted Kennedy has him confused with RFK and there are some kind of other confused thinking and scores with the Clintons.  There simply isn't serious liberal backing for Obama as a liberal.

Re: don't be bitter (none / 0)

Just like Clinton he's a middle of the road democratic candidate unlikely to make waves with his policies.

They both have liberal tendencies, they both have centrist tendencies. A side effect of that is that's its easy for people to pick and chose what they are depending on their support and dislikes Clinton is conservative and Obama liberal or Clinton Liberal and Obama conservative.

It's "project your own silliness on our candidates" season.

Some of us here are liberals, not Republicans.

Seems like you can't tell the difference between the two.

So wait (2.00 / 4)

the most liberal senator in the usa senate is a centrist/closet conservative, you really need to get with the "new and improved talking points" after all Kentucky is up next, and that state is conservative, hence Obama is now a liberal...

Re: So wait (none / 0)

I'm beginning to think we're entering a post red state blue state age. The old labels and pigeonholes really don't seem to be working very well. And that's the good news. My recommendation: Don't put your politicians into tiny, predefined boxes, or you may wind up very disappointed.

Re: So wait (none / 0)

They don't seem to work because both candidates are middle of the road dems that don't differ from each other on any significant policy points.

So all pigeonholing that differenciate between the two don't work because they're based on silly interpretations of off hand comments.

In the general there will be real difference between McCain and Obama and we can all pigeonhole to our harts' content.

But I echo your recommendation, mostly because it's difficult enough to get them into big boxes. I doubt that would fit into tiny ones. Politicians don't fold that well and tend to spoil pretty quickly if not kept in dark and dry conditions. ;)

The media is talking about how good (none / 0)

Obama and Edwards look together on stage, how they seem very comfortable with each other, very "in sync" and very much in agreement on their message - end corporate control of our government by limiting the power of lobbyists, resolve the problems we face as a nation in the best interests of ALL of us, not just the uber-large corporate shareholders.

I saw the clash THREE times near London in 78/79. I was guarding their door at the last gig.

I'm almost as happy tonight. Oh. And no-one's tried to bottle me this time, so probably even happier

WOW!! Wonderful diary, thanks! (2.00 / 1)

Those two sure look good together, like winners, definitely.  I'm hoping and praying that Edwards will say yes to the VP spot.

I don't see the two of these guys as Pres and VP, I see them more as equal partners.  Obama is more the creative person who can sell the message to young people, while Edwards is more the wise person with a knack for reaching people my age.

Please, Democrats, put these two gifted leaders on the same ticket and let them fix this country together!
