how to destroy a candidate.... part II

one day at a time...

"everyone's first wife standing outside a probate court"

"white women are a problem, that's, you know -- we all live with that"

media diagnose Hillary "Sybil" Clinton with "mood swings," depression, and "multiple personality disorder"

"when she comes on television, I involuntarily cross my legs"

"Clinton Campaign Brought Sexism Out of Hiding"

"pimped out"

"what's behind the laugh?"

"fucking whore"

"The on-line community is solidly behind Obama and I've read many posts and comments saying Obama voters would never, ever vote for Hillary so when I first heard these statistics on teevee I was quite surprised. Then I realized what is happening here. The media is fueling their anger. It's that simple. And there are a lot of rank and file Democratic voters who are very upset. I might add that a few bloggers have had their bodies snatched away too. And on CNN Sunday, this notion was validated by Roger Simon:

SIMON: ...I find that if you go into Hillary crowds, the anger you find on the part of her supporters, especially women supporters, is directed not against Barack Obama, but against the media.

ZERNIKE: Yes. I mean, I think what people were reacting to this week wasn't so much the media declaring the race over, as it was this kind of "Ding dong the witch is dead" quality about that tone to the comments. And I do think people are angry.  And I think when you look at, you know, the percentages of Hillary Clinton supporters who say they won't support Obama, I think Roger is right. They're mad at -- they're mad at the media. They're not necessarily mad at Obama.

You have a lot of free time.....

Ok, and I checked with my daughter?

You know, the one I am supposed to weep for?

Mainly she asked for a new bigger memory card for her camera...

And, she is STILL for Obama!

(She did ask me Why there was West Virginia and Virginia, and why don't they just join up and be Virginia!)

God bless you and your newborn.
Cherish the moments you have with her.
Perhaps she'll become an MP, and maybe even a PM.

And she'll have tea one day with an American woman president. (maybe my daughter).

I really hope for that, CG.

Well, if she is up feeding a new born, I am considerably older?

I had my daughter late, and she is in Community College.

And, as I said to CG the other night, I am sorry that some older women in the US MIGHT not live to see a woman POTUS, I'm betting my daughter will.

It's just not going to be HRC?

And, again as I told CG the other night, like virtually 100% of her contemporaries, my daughter and her buds are WAY out for Obama.

Why???? (2.00 / 1)

I don't understand what you are trying to accomplish today??  Are some people sexist assholes??  YES!!  Are some people racist assholes?? YES!!  Do these people fairly represent either Senator Obama or Senator Clinton?? NO!!

Geez, I could start a diary about racist comments and actions toward Barack, such things as racial slurs painted on his campaign offices, terrible emails, photos, and t-shirt/bumper sticker slogans.

But I don't because this is not a fair representation of HRC supporters.  I'd rather focus on the 11-year old kid that sold his bike to contribute to Hillary or the 82-year old woman that Barack asked to be his running mate.

There's alot of great people on both sides of this campaign!!

Re: Why???? (2.00 / 2)

I don't care...I'm just sick of this negative shit, we are witnessing something incredible here, regardless of who wins.  Why can't we focus on the fact that an African American and woman have gotten this far and have changed the political outlook in the USA forever.

Instead, all I hear is sexism, racism and whatever shit the MSM feeds us...I'd rather look at this experience as the "changing of the guard" and that more people are willing to look at people for what they stand for and not because of what gender or color they are.

Sorry Hootie

I'll tell you only kind and beautiful stories that up lift everytime I see you here on the boards.

:)

I'll skip the unkind parts.

But just a thought. If the unkind parts are too much for you just to hear about, imagine how difficult it is for the people who they are said about. I should think it is even more difficult to be the one it is directed to to have heard it said to them.

So perhaps listening to this will help folks be at least empathatic to the victims of sexism and racism. To become aware that it still exists. :)

Or maybe not.

What do you think?

Re: Why???? (none / 0)

If they are presented in an empathetic form, I would say go for it!!  But most of the times sexism and racism are presented in a way that argues why a candidate is losing.  I feel to see a woman and African American breaking all kinds of stereotypical ideas that we should focus on the positives that this election has afforded us.

But what you don't see or comment on is how HRC's campaign has changed the political landscape forever...You might not like the results of her probably losing the nomination, but what she has accomplished in changing how all people view women is pretty spectacular.

Re: Why???? (2.00 / 1)

Hi ya Hootie. Ya know I appreciate the effort and the optimism. But-

Well.

Because we've had the vote since the '20's, the feminist revolution since the '70's, already had a woman VP on the Democratic party ticket, and we are only just now seeing a woman in leadership in the US House of Representatives? I don't think this is great strides forward if she isn't on the presidential ticket.  Why? Well on Mother's Day this year I got to hear about how folks don't want Sen. Clinton as a President because of possible PMS concerns. Seems folks thought her hormonal state as a woman might cause her to start a war. I didn't hear similar concerns that  Sen. Obama or Sen. McCain's testosterone levels might cause a war. Mercy knows how that testosterone can make men cranky. (Sorry I couldn't resist under the circumstances.) If women did have the same chance as men to run for president? The issue of Sen. Clinton's gender would have never come up. We wouldn't think of it. But it did. Alot.

As a woman? I didn't find this fact inspiring.

Nor did it make me think, "Oh gosh what a dinosaur." Unfortunately,I've heard alot of "anti woman" type things said by folks during this primary season. Nope. I don't think Sen. Obama or Sen. McCain are going to do anything to change that. If they were going to do so as president? They would have already done so as presidential candidates.

If Sen. Clinton doesn't make it on the ticket and to general election? I don't think that a woman will make it to the presidential general election for a very long time. Besides this isn't the first time that a woman has run on the Democratic ticket in the general election. If she doesn't make it to presidential nominee we ain't breaking new ground here.

I'm a woman. A woman whose mom worked when it wasn't cool which was good because she 1) really loved what she did and 2) there wasn't a domestic bone in her body. She is a bundle of determination my mom. Tough. I had a ring side seat to see the difference in her choices verses the menfolk. I could see she got a hard time for her choices.

If things have really changed the issue of Sen. Clinton being a woman would have NEVER, EVER come up. At all.

My opinion. As a woman. :(

Re: Well if sexism is actually worse (2.00 / 4)

Mike,

Racism and sexism are twin children of different mothers. Both are about equality. Equal treatment under the law. Both are about a history of human beings treated as chattel by other human beings. Women are still traded by their families in some parts of the world for things. I should think that both racism and sexism are equal in their horror because in both cases the victim is unfairly treated by the society they live in based on a biological state for which they didn't predetermine.

So I guess neither is acceptable or should be tolerated. :)

IowaMike,

The answer is that sexism is worse out in the open, but racism is more potent at the ballot box. If you can't beat sexism out in the open in the media now, how are you going to beat racism in November when everyone's in their own little private cubicle?

Re: how to destroy a candidate.... part II (2.00 / 4)

What is most disappointing for me is that so few people seem to care.  I don't know if it is because it's Hillary who is taking the crap or if it is that sexism is one of the remaining socially acceptable prejudices.  I wrote about this on my private blog two months ago, but I didn't cross-post it here because I just didn't want to deal with the crap.  What really angered me about what happened in NH in January was how the media just blew it off:

There was a famous moment in New Hampshire in January when two men interrupted a speech being given by Hillary Clinton.  They yelled, "Iron My Shirt!" and jumped to their feet holding signs.  That same day, Senator Obama was heckled by anti-abortion protesters during one of his speeches.  The media reported the incidents and moved on without much fanfare, but I was struck by Ben Smith's (of Politico.com) response:

They're not parallel moments, but both Clinton and Obama were heckled tonight, and their reactions are telling.

Clinton, in Salem, was interrupted by a pudgy young man chanting "Iron my shirt," and holding a big sign with the same words.

"Oh the remnants of sexism, alive and well tonight," she said as he was dragged out. "As I think has been abundantly demonstrated, I am also running to break through the highest and hardest glass ceiling," she continued.

Her point was confrontation; Obama faced a less laughable protest, from an anti-abortion group, and used the moment to make a point about conciliation, declaring himself "proud" of anti-abortion protesters and praising their organizing.

NOTE: I should mention that Obama praised their organizing after they were dragged out of the room.

What stood out for Ben Smith is that Hillary, the divisive partisan warrior who won't be able to get anything done in Washington, responded by getting in their faces and having them thrown out while Barack Obama, the community organizer with a heart, praised the protesters for exercising their constitutional rights?

I can't help but wonder how Barack Obama, and Ben Smith, for that matter, would have reacted if the senator had been confronted by men holding signs and screaming, "Shine my shoes!"  Would that have been considered "less laughable" than the anti-abortion protesters?

Re: how to destroy a candidate.... part II (2.00 / 2)

So-called progressive blogs have been complicit, too.  Josh Marshall of tpm described her demoting of Mark Penn last month as her having "gelded" him.

You've put your finger on one of the most disturbing aspects of this campaign, the media's outrageous treatment of the Clinton's.  Even more shocking to me is the readiness with which self-identified progressives have ignored and even fostered this outrageous treatment of Senator Clinton because it was politically expedient.  Whether you support her or not, as democrats we should not tolerate these pernicious smears against a democratic candidate.  Very disappointing.
