Life During Wartime

Bumped - Todd

Our President:

For the first time, Bush revealed a personal way in which he has tried to acknowledge the sacrifice of soldiers and their families: He has given up golf.

"I don't want some mom whose son may have recently died to see the commander in chief playing golf," he said. "I feel I owe it to the families to be in solidarity as best as I can with them. And I think playing golf during a war just sends the wrong signal."

Bush said he made that decision after the August 2003 bombing of the United Nations headquarters in Baghdad, which killed Sergio Vieira de Mello, the top U.N. official in Iraq and the organization's high commissioner for human rights.

"I remember when de Mello, who was at the U.N., got killed in Baghdad as a result of these murderers taking this good man's life," he said. "I was playing golf -- I think I was in central Texas -- and they pulled me off the golf course and I said, 'It's just not worth it anymore to do.'"

"It's just not worth it anymore to do."

Golfing, that is.

Late-night comedians will mock this, but I don't find it funny at all.

This is tragic.

Re: Life During Wartime (2.00 / 1)

I can't remember the last time I read something that made my eyes pop and my jaw drop like THAT.

For all of the flaws of our Democratic party, I am so reminded that we are stitched together by a common respect for hard-working Americans, many of whom live under difficult circumstances the likes of which many Republicans can't even fathom.

In fact, it is precisely in this inability to wrap their heads around what it is to be American for so many people that has brought them to the current state they are in.  Petulant, spoiled children of privelige parading as government officials.

I know we aren't perfect.  I'm saddened by what the party has done to Hillary Clinton, moderate voters, African-Americans, women...and I'm saddened that we seem poised to pitch another election...

But dude, at least we fucking aren't THAT.

"we are stitched together by a common respect for hard-working Americans"

That includes Obama supporters, too...  Remember that, Clinton supporters... We are on the same team.

I'm pretty sure that's the point I just made...

That comment wasn't directed to you... I was emphasizing your point for the other readers of the blog! :-)

Re: Life During Wartime (2.00 / 1)

Well as you know war is such a romantic thing, such a noble thing. As W put it earlier this year when speaking to military and civilian personnel serving in Afghanistan: "I must say, I'm a little envious. If I were slightly younger and not employed here, I think it would be a fantastic experience to be on the front lines of helping this young democracy succeed. It must be exciting for you . . . in some ways romantic, in some ways, you know, confronting danger. You're really making history, and thanks."

But golf? What's dangerous and romantic about golf? Walking around with a stick in your hands banging on a little white ball trying to propel it toward a hole in the ground. How frivolous can you get? How demoralizing it would be for those soldiers risking their lives for their country to see their commander in chief swinging sticks at little white balls in the grass.

How guilty, how embarrassed, the president would feel if he saw them looking over at him.  After all, he was no Eisenhower who had fought in order to earn his rounds of golf.

And besides, there are serious decisions to make, and he's the decider.  What could be more decisive a decision than to give up golf?  A true leader. Our Prez. Dubya.

Re: Life During Wartime (2.00 / 1)

Interesting book by Chris Hedges: War Is a Force that Gives Us Meaning

It's not pro-war, even though the title is kind of ominous.  It talks about how "going to war" is used to drum up patriotism and make people feel like they are in something together.  It's a scary but illuminating read.

Could this comment be topped? (2.00 / 1)

Has Bush just captured his entire Presidency in a phrase?

For those inclined to smite Bush rhetorically--and they are legion--the President has made himself round and placed himself upon a tee, where he waits 3/4" above the ground while a nation of verbal Callaway Big Berthas simultaeously cocks at the top of their backswing.

This should be interesting.

Learn from this, and never let this happen again.

the worst president ever (2.00 / 2)

What a worthless sacrifice - couldn't you find some meaningful sacrifice that might make one iota of difference in the lives of our troops.  Like, gee, some sensible executive measures regarding veterans benefits, troop rotations, etc..

What a bumper sticker your sacrifice makes -  "Support our Troops, Give up Golf".

For all the good this does, why not just acknowledge the sacrifice of our soldiers by switching Barney's dog food?

Didn't he also give up candy (or something equally as baffling)?  What a guy.  I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

Yes, I am a Clintonista for Obama.

Apparently he lied about the candy.... (none / 0)

As awful as this quote is, it just makes me that much happier that this idiot's presidency is almost over.  It doesn't get much more out of touch.

HATRED! (2.00 / 1)

That's the only thing I feel when I look at or hear George W. Bush. The man is evil to the core!!!

Re: Life During Wartime (2.00 / 1)

The funny thing is, my bet is Jonah Goldberg, Malkin, Instapunchline and others see this and tear up. I mean, say what you want about Bush being clueless, out-of-touch, moronic, petulant, spoiled, ridiculous and evil... but at least he's sacrificing GOLF. What have those guys given up?

I imagine Malkin will announce she, too, is giving up something important. Maybe darts? Pantload will follow suit and forgo his annual cribbage tourney. My guess is Glenn Beck tries to stop picking his nose and eating it (Pica, I believe it's called), but some sacrifices go too far.

Seriously (2.00 / 1)

It brings a tear to my eye... this Bozo's gonna give up golf, because what?  It gives the wrong impression?  Politics for the sake of politics is bad... pandering is bad... we all see and recognize it -- I hope -- but this is ridiculous (worthy of ridicule).

Y'all have to draw your own conclusions and make your own comparisons.

Re: Life During Wartime (2.00 / 1)

I see he hasn't given up goofing around at the Correspondents' Dinner or having fancy-dress parties.

There are no words harsh enough for this miserable, small-minded, small-brained, heartless excuse for a human being.

Re: Life During Wartime (2.00 / 1)

Bush is surely playing to his base. In fact, in Country Club 19th Holes all over America, glasses have been raised in tribute to our Prez. Some even promised to not take mulligans until the war is over to do their part.

The good news: another pound on McCain's back. Before long he is going to have to publicly repudiate and renounce to avoid losing by historic margins.

Re: Life During Wartime (2.00 / 1)

It's funny.  He has given up golf, but has never asked the American people to give up anything in this "war on terror".

He squandered a real opportunity to make change after 9/11.  Instead we got tax cuts for the rich and torture.

History will not be kind.

But he did ask us to give up something. The Bill of Rights and our status as a defender of the International Rule of Law.
