It's budget season in California and today, my friends at Courage Campaign (for whom I do part time work) launched a new ad going after the California Republican Party for keeping in place a tax loophole whereby yacht owners are able to pay...get this...NO TAX on their yachts. This at a time when the state coffers desperately need replenishing. California is a state where responsibly raising taxes to pay for programs and infrastructure, as opposed to the usual borrow and spend Republican way, requires a 2/3 majority in both houses in the state legislature, which the Democrats don't quite have. The whiners in the vocal minority that is the California Republican Party...excuse me, The Yacht Party...is digging in its heels and I'm pleased to see Courage Campaign pushing back with their effort to influence the debate in Sacramento. Arianna Huffington is helping us out with a fundraiser to get the ad on the air -- $100 or more gets you a signed copy of her book "The Right Is Wrong." Do me a favor and take a look at the ad below, give if you can and check out this nice n snarky page Courage created to explain why the yacht tax loophole is so outrageous.

What else is going on tonight?

The 24K question is: Does Huffington actually believe the "right is wrong?" I need convincing.

healthcare and nuclear safety. He is a huge beneficiary of Arianna Huffington's largesse.

I get the impression that many of these so called 'liberals' are actually right winers in disguise.

Look at Obama's healthcare plan, which is going to keep healthcare unaffordable for millions of people, while ensuring that heathcare insurance companies get off the hook in lawsuits.

After all, people HAD a choice, they just CHOSE the cheap 'insurance', right?

Just like, with Obama, we are CHOOSING to reject universal healthcare, right?

I think there should be huge taxes on yachts.. (none / 0)

And they should not be writeoffs unless they are actually NEEDED for NECESSARY BUSINESS TRANSPORATION.. between places not served by other forms of transportation - not entertaining customers once a year.

Do HUMMERS and HUGE SUVS still get their writeoff? (none / 0)

I remember a few years ago you could basically get one for free because of them.. and of course, being 'light trucks' they get out of pollution regs.. too.

The admins have been much more attentive to troll diaries recently, good job to the site staff for improving their responsiveness.

In other news, I'm sure you all have noticed that three reputable polls (Rasmussen, PPP, and Reasearch 2000) have all confirmed that Sen. Liddy Dole faces the fight of her political life against Democratic state senator Kay Hagan in North Carolina.  This adds another Senate race to watch in what is increasingly a large map this year.  In order of competitiveness:

1) Virginia: Say hello to Sen. MARK Warner in January.

2) New Mexico: Tom Udall is wiping the floor with either of his opponents.

3) New Hampshire: Jeanne Shaheen has never lost her large lead against Sen. Sununu, the Santorum of this year.

4) Colorado: Mark Udall is outraising and outpolling Bob Schaffer in a state that is trending blue fast.

5) Alaska: When you are an institution like Senator Stevens, and the mayor of your state's largest city announces against you, and polls within the margin of error, it is time to quit, or be defeated.

6) Minnesota: Al Franken continues to poll competitively against Sen. Coleman in a blue state open to electing non-traditional politicians.

7) Oregon: Both Steve Novick and Jeff Merkley (we'll know which one next week) poll competitively against Sen. Smith and are raising the money necessary to win in this Dem-trending state.

8) North Carolina: Sen. Dole barely spends any time in the state, she was just asking for a strong candidate to take her out.  Hagan just may do that.

9) Maine: The sleeper race of the cycle, Tom Allen has been running hard for months and has built up the funds to run a real race.  If he can tie Collins to Bush, it's winnable, and she may become this year's Linc Chafee.

10) Texas: Rick Noriega polls surprisingly well against unpopular Sen. Cornyn.  The growing Latino population of this state, with Bush no longer a boost to GOP fortunes, will surprise us all with a close race.

11) Mississippi: This became one to watch the second we got a former Governor in the race against appointed Sen. Wicker.  Ronnie Musgrove could very well win this one, especially with African-American turnout at record levels with Obama at the top of the ticket.

There are also a few that aren't competitive, but could be under the right circumstances (like Jim Bunning in 2004, and George Allen in 2006):

12) Oklahoma: Wait for crazy Inhofe to have a Jim Bunning moment and this race could heat up.  We have a great candidate in state Senator Andrew Rice.

13) Idaho: Great candidate in Larry LaRocco, but Lt. Gov. Risch should have everything he needs to easily put this seat away.  The fact that he hasn't means this is one to watch.  Risch has a lot of GOP enemies in the state.

13) Kentucky: We'll know next week if DINO (but rich self-funder) Bruce Lunsford will be the guy that makes us hold our noses but support against McConnell.  Or perhaps Greg Fischer, whose support has been increasing recently, and would probably run a much better race.  In any case, being tied so closely to GOP obstructionism is going to cost McConnell at least some support.

14) Nebraska: We won't win this, but anyone who is willing to at least challenge a former Bush cabinet member for this seat deserves our admiration and support.  That person is Scott Kleeb.

Re: Open Thread (none / 0)

whats wrong with a tax free?  I wish there were more Tax free options.  Can you imagine how much more money we would have to spend if most of our items were tax free?  The struggling economy would boom without the burdens of overwhelming taxes and governmental irresponsibility.

I'm all in favor of less taxes...why aren't you?

Re: Open Thread (none / 0)

one more thing, you mentioned responsibly raising taxes...are you kidding me?  when has our government every acted responsibly with our money?  Lets take a quick look at economics 101...When governments compete the people loose...always.

We do need taxes and we do need responsible taxes but I have yet to see the need for cutting teachers when not one administrative position is cut or minimized, when city workers are let go but management pay is increased.  Our government is so far from responsible that it makes me cry to think we let it get so bad...Wake up...

Apart from being a little too long, it's a very enticing ad. Keep up the good work.

I hope they have a 30 second version (none / 0)

Cause that spot takes way to long to make it's point... I don't think it's very effective in it's current form.

Cut it down by half, and kick up the impact of the finish... and then i'll be happy to help pay for it to run.

Re: Open Thread (none / 0)

The yacht tax loophole is based on the fact that many boats can be considered a home. So larger boats of all flavors get the same relief that homeowners do on mortgage interest.

I have no problem with saying you can't claim the interest paid on a second home (if you can afford a second home, you don't deserve the tax cut), but speaking for those who live aboard (or even live in house boats), don't start taxing mortgage interest just because the house floats!
