SNL Clobbers Hillary !!

Just when you thought things couldn't get worse, it does.

For the longest time, SNL was her champion - now they've had it.

They're really, ahem, ahem,... ANGRY with Hillary.

This is a just a willllllld guess, but I think it's cuz of something she said (D'Oh!!).

Caution:  your ribs will hurt from the laughter.

► When you're lost Tina Fey, you're done.  Is there anyone left?

I don't get it.  Who called Clinton a "bitch" in that skit?

Amy Poehler?  Tina Fey?  Why are they sexist for writing this skit?  Self-hatred, is it?

Hillary can't use baseless accusations of sexism as a get-out-of-jail free card.  Her recent behavior would be generating the same kind of response if it came from a man.  Or do you forget how crazy Bill used to drive his political opponents?

The notion that all opposition to HRC comes from sexists may be comforting, but it's not grounded in reality.

Re: She's still writing for SNL n/t (none / 0)

Neither you nor any of the commenters who have recc'ed your comment know what you are talking about. First off, Tina is essentially retired from writing for SNL (although she wrote her own "bitch is the new black" skit and some others for the show she hosted). Second, she's too good a writer to have penned the lame skit that you are trying to attribute to her. Third, if she had come out against Hillary, there would have been news about it, but she hasn't and there isn't. None of you have an iota of evidence to back up the bogus assertions made in this diary.

I didn't suggest that I know what she believes, although I know some of her beliefs because she does interviews. I'm merely asserting, once again, that she did not write the skit, and that if she had, it would be publicy known by now.

Re: SNL Clobbers Hillary !! (2.00 / 4)

There are varieties and shades of racism. It isn't a black and white argument, though that premise makes it easier to handwave one's way out of the accusation. I personally haven't heard anything that would prove that anyone here "was a racist",  but I have heard racism of subtle shades from enough campaign surrogates to justify the observation.

Further, I don't doubt that there are plenty of Hillary supporters in WV that support her for legitimate reasons. I also don't doubt that there are plenty that do so because they wouldn't vote for a black man. I don't deny anyone the right to such an opinion, but it IS a racist opinion not matter how it may be chosen to be spun.

No one that matters (in terms of being representative of a campaign) has ever claimed that all Hillary's supporters are racist. That is a straw man perpetuated by the many delightful diehard diaries on this site. By threatening to withhold your support in November based on this straw man, you only validate the SNL sore loser meme.

Finally, if rural voters want to vote Republican in November despite a downward spiraling economy, rising gas prices, non-existent healthcare, and sure incompetence abroad - they're only making their own beds. They are the ones that will fall through the cracks. Those much-despised latte-drinking white collar liberals will probably survive another GOP administration a lot better than they will. And if they do so because, as you allude, someone called them racist, it only adds to this delusion a slightly farcical touch.

Why are we still arguing...the nomination has been settled.  Hillary put up a good fight.  She'd be the nominee if she voted against the war resolution or if she had not let Mark Penn run the campaign into the ground.  These were the two big flaws I saw in her, and they led me to look at other candidates.  I found a great one in Obama, and weighed him against my long love of Hillary. But I determined she has changed a lot from the Hillary I loved in the early 90s, mostly for the worse.  I still like her, even if some of her supporters drive me crazy with their Florida/Michigan bullshit.  Anyway, Hillary lost.  It's over.  Get over it!

Re: its called comedy. (2.00 / 4)

actually what this skit is pointing out is how Hillary's statements the past week seem to be openly courting the racist vote. that does not equate "all her supporters are racist" and more than her asking for the votes of women implies that all her supporters are women.

the problem is that, generally speaking, racists are generally not a demographic to which the Democratic party openly panders. we may have a big tent, but there are still some standards for admission.

When did she say this? Quote please? (2.00 / 2)

She said white people vote for her.

She said she's getting a block of voters he's not getting.

These voters happen to be "downscale" in smaller towns.

All of this is true. But I'm "downscale" and am not a racist. I was for Obama until mid-January. He is not planning on reforming healthcare until "the end of my first term." I can't wait until 2012. Hillary will start on this right out of the gate. First 100 days.

Re: When did she say this? Quote please? (2.00 / 2)

she said, "Senator Obama's support among working, hard-working Americans, white Americans, is weakening again."

and if you have heard the audio there is absolutely no question that she was listing those as two separate groups. she was very clearly implying "hard working americans [are] white americans."

that is a slap in the face of all non-white Americans, because it is feeding into the racist stereotype of them not working as hard as everyone else. Senator Clinton is a smart woman, and she knows this. She did not do this on accident.

And Obama has said he wants to achieve healthcare reform by the end of his first term. Changing a system as massive as the national healthcare system is not going to happen in 100 days. Even if they brought legislation to a vote the day he was sworn in, it would take years to make all the changes. Hillary started fighting for healthcare reform "on day one" in 1993, and that never got done. Obama isn't setting a less ambitious goal, he is being honest about how long it is going to take.

The audio, which was played on pretty much every political show a couple of days ago, is really painful to listen to.  You can tell she's having a lot of trouble getting the words out.  In my opinion she was trying to equivocate and use 'hard-working' as a euphemism for white, and at the last minute decided to throw caution to the wind and say 'white' anyway.

He's saying it will take that long to build a successful coalition to pass health care reform, and he's right.

Hillary would try to ram it down everyone's throats in the first 100 days, and it would be the 1990s all over again. She can't pass it because she pisses everyone off. Look at what happened then. She told Cooper she would "cut him off at the knees" because his plan wouldn't be universal until 1998. She was impatient. Look at where we'd be now if she were willing to compromise then. We would have had universal health care in 1998. Instead, we have a political climate where nobody wants to touch it, and many of whom we would need for a winning coalition oppose it whole heartedly.

Don't base your support on a pipe dream of a losing fighter.

Re: When did she say this? Quote please? (2.00 / 4)

I am a health policy advisor to the Obama campaign.  Obama has said he will get to work on national health care his first YEAR in office and that he will have it enacted by the end of his first term.  Hillary in contrast said she would have it enacted by the end of her SECOND term and her first year, she will sign the renewal of the Children's State Health insurance program.  These were said numerous times in debates over the last year.

Ted Kennedy has already added two staff to the health committee to draft Obama's plan into legislation so that it is ready to be introduced right after the inauguration.  This is the only way health care will happen.  Quickly after the election, assuming he sweeps more Dems in on his coattails so that the Repubs can't filibuster.

Hillary is all talk, no action on this.  Obama is the only one who can and will get it done.

Hillary Clinton thinks that her supporters, among the white working class will not support Obama.  A number of people have said that behind the scenes in arguments to superdelegates her reasoning is that he's black.

Publicly, she leaves it to members of her campaign to say.  Ed Rendell is one.  Sergio Ben Dixon is another.  She has not retracted their statements, nor has she been asked to.

So, ergo, she must believe they are racist (none / 0)

Voters have more formidable mental barriers to voting for Obama than the color of his skin.  Some people think that Obama resembles the type of Democrat that has been rejected by voters too often in the past.  Many object to his presidency based on grounds of meritocracy.  In their own lives, they believe that nobody who just became a junior executive and has little discernible accomplishments would be pushed ahead of others into the CEO position.

Brutal, but concise (2.00 / 8)

I don't think this skit necessarally portrays accurately how Clinton is campaigning now, but it does underscore the essential issues at stake very clearly.

There is a fear that Clinton will be a sore loser out there.  Certainly on this blog there are a lot of people who might be considered sore losers... look at 1950Democrat's diary from yesterday where he said he'd follow Clinton anywhere but Camp Obama.  The media has been reporting on wedge politics so vigorously that some people are now personally invested in the opposing candidate losing instead of their candidate winning.  You know, screw policy platforms or the future of the country, that guy must pay.

I know Jerome doesn't want us to talk about it, but exit polling does confirm that race does matter to perhaps 10% of Clinton's voters.  This either means that they just really love white people or they do have a problem with black people.  Ignoring the problem doesn't make it go away; it's a legitimate issue that Obama will face in the general election, because racists, indeed, will not likely vote for a black president, even against their economic well-being.  I don't think that this reflects significant race-cards being played on the part of either candidate: You don't need to provoke a racist to vote against a black person.  They've probably come to that conclusion on their own.

Finally, it is very true that Clinton is viewed by many as having no scruples whatsoever.  I have Republican friends who, when I remarked that it was bizarre that she was flipping on the gas tax holiday issue from her 2000 position, welcomed me to their nightmare; even moderate Republicans have believed for over a decade and a half that there is no position that she holds sacred and that she'll sacrifice anything or anyone to win.  I still have a hard time believing that she would start self-financing to Mitt Romney levels in pursuit of a 5% chance at the nomination (and that's a generous estimate).

This skit has everything to do with media perception of Hillary Clinton; it remains to be seen how accurate it is.

Re: Brutal, but concise (none / 0)

That's the public perception of Hillary that has been following her around since Bill was elected to the governor's office of Arkansas. Most people are not aware of this, but the people of Arkansas despised her. The weird thing was, people knew how badly Bill treated her then, but they hated her in spite of that.

Re: Strange (none / 0)

I think it's a combination of factors. I think some of the reasons she was hated weren't really valid, other reasons were related to her nontraditional role. Some of the debatably valid reasons have been forgotten. And people are more willing to forgive and back their own against outsiders and newcomers.

Heh, some sensitivity here (2.00 / 5)

Look, analyzing comedy is mostly a waste of time, but the point of the "my supporters are racist" joke wasn't to say that EVERY SINGLE Clinton supporter is a racist who won't vote for a black candidate; it was to point out that, YES, there ARE Clinton supporters who will NOT vote for Obama simply because he is black.  That's just a (sad) fact, and it IS funny to (1) mock those racists and (2) tease Clinton for supposedly banking on white-people-who-will-never-support-the- black-guy vote.

Every time a Clinton supporter here gets all outraged that race is discussed, I laugh.  They are denying simple truths about racism in America, and that outrage is beyond faux.

The sketch was funny.  Good stuff.

by Slim Tyranny on Sun May 11, 2008 at 09:24:26 AM EST

Re: Heh, some sensitivity here (none / 0)

I have to give Clinton supporters some credit here. There are people out there making blanket statements about Clinton supporters being racist. There are a lot of people saying everyone at MyDD is racist. Heck, there are even people saying that MyDD itself is racist. It's no wonder the people here are sensitive about the racist meme. If I happened to think the white candidate was better, and people kept calling me a racist for that, I'd be sensitive every time the race issue came up too. As an Obama supporter, I feel sorry for the nonracist Clinton supporters on this issue. But at the same time, I wish more of the Clinton supporters would recognize that the Clintons have been openly courting the racist vote in West Virginia.

Re: SNL Clobbers Hillary !! (2.00 / 2)

I think that Hillary said it best, white, hard working white americans are her core supporters, and yes there was something hidden in there, but I can't say or I will get thrown off of MyDD.  No matter what she meant she made a big mistake in thinking that hard core yellow dog democrats as myself would find what she said not offensive.  The truth is that Hillary's supporters are not yellow dog democrats who vote democrat no matter who is running, but are democrats who democrats can't depend on no matter how hard democrats try to win them over.  These Reagan democrats she says will vote for her in November are the same ones that voted for Bush two times, and will more than likely vote for McCain even if she was to be the nominee.  Obama's supporters are yellow dog democrats, and AAs and white workers (college and non-college voters), and independents, and young voters who are more involved in politics than ever before.
