Why BO will NOT pick a woman for VP

Think about it for a sec:

For the first time in U.S. history, no white male on the ticket.
White Males Need Not Apply?
White males don't matter to the nouveau regime?

That'll go over real well with a lot of people.

Re: Why BO will NOT pick a woman for VP (2.00 / 2)

The post kind of reeks of sexism and racism.

Speaking as a white male, we've had our turn for over 200 years. Obama has every right to nominate a female or non white VP.

Re: Why BO will NOT pick a woman for VP (2.00 / 0)

I very much agree with the diarist. I don't think it is at all sexist or racist. I think it's quite realistic.  An AA candidate is great and a female would be wonderful also. but together on the same ticket I feel sure we will lose in a year when we should easily win. It may not be right or fair but too much change at once is a loser.

What year is this? 1966?

Holy smokes, the fabric of time-space must have renched, because I thought it was 2008?

God, use that argument with someone under 30, its REALLY gonna fly....

Re: Why BO will NOT pick a woman for VP (none / 0)

I totally agree with you on under 30.  What percentage is that of the electorate?

Re: Why BO will NOT pick a woman for VP (none / 0)

An IMPORTANT ONE?

Depends a lot on turnout, and I think Obama will have under 30 turn out, all the way to the 18 year olds, that will set records?

Or, are we going to "discount them" as I have seen lots of posters do here with the black vote?

Arrgh (2.00 / 1)

Do you read the front page posts at all?  The under 30 demographic (Millenials in particular) is huge for Democrats but yet people continue to bash them, I will bet they are over 15% of the voters in November and they will break 2:1 for the democrat (unless we have a convention like 1968).

Re: Why BO will NOT pick a woman for VP (2.00 / 0)

It was certainly worded poorly, but the point is pretty valid.  Exit polls in states like Ohio and Pennsylvania showed lots of voters were unwilling to vote for a black candidate as well as a female candidate.  Obama is going to need some help in those states, and adding a woman to the ticket probably makes it worse in those states.

Its unfortunate, but probably true.

We've had our turn?? (2.00 / 1)

No offense... but I don't care if you are white, black, asian, or purple. I don't care if you are gay or straight. I don't care if you are male, female, or other. I don't care what your religion is or how much money you have made. There is no such thing as turns in elected politics. It is not Obama's turn, it is not Hillary's turn, it is not McCain's turn.

It is the "turn" of who the people choose to vote for... and there is no shame in pointing out that there are white men (I suspect mostly R's and I's but some D's as well,) who will be turned off by the  idea of no white male on the ticket. Thats just the way it is whether it is right or wrong.

Re: Why BO will NOT pick a woman for VP (2.00 / 1)

OMG yes.

As I white male (and, evidently, an ELITE one) I'm thinking, we need TRIPLE digits before we can slide in either a woman or a person of color ON EITHER side, VP or POTUS?

WHITE MALES RULE, especially RICH White males!

I think either Obama's great great grandaughter, or mabybe Chelseas great grand neice?

Cause, us white men have done SUCH a bang-up job, and besides, who would you like to have a beer with?

Re: Why BO will NOT pick a woman for VP (2.00 / 1)

no one said we can't have a black or woman on one side of a ticket. he said, and is just being realistic and politically incorrect, that both on one ticket is not going to be good for picking up middle American suburban swing voters, and getting enough rural voters. its a fact. He never said white males are better, or smarter, he's merely pointing out that much of America is so uncomfortable with a black, hence even a Dem primary with people who are supposed to be liberal minded and open, but because things are bad, there is the possibility of them holding their nose and voting Obama, but it is very fragile, and because many are also uncomfortable with a woman, we may mess up our ticket as it could be too much change for Americans to handle. Much of America is extremely used to white males running the show, and don't have a problem with it both because men are seen by many as being stronger, and white because most white people are more comfortable around whites than blacks, as most like their own kind the best. We cannot overload a ticket in both a year we can win, but will be close because of Obama's race. If you want to deny Obama's race is not going to make a difference in this contest, and that many voters may be uncomfortable, and ignore reality, you got another thing coming. he never said white males are actually better or smarter, but he said that thats how many Americans, working Americans, that we need to vote for the Dem ticket, who are not all liberal ideologues like bloggers, will think.

Re: Why BO will NOT pick a woman for VP (2.00 / 1)

you said it best. The sad thing is people are too politically correct to say something. A catholic on the ticket won 1 out of 3 times, and he had a very tough time, the election was 49-49 Kennedy/Nixon. A black is going to have it very hard. The ethnic tension amongst white and black workers is already going to make this election very close due to history, so the last thing we need is to make it even harder for ourselves. We don't have an easy opponent. While white men can be tagged as liberal, its even easier to do it with women and blacks, so two on a ticket will make us "totally out of the mainstream" and it will work, and the enemy will win. I'm glad someone finally said it

I'm sure it matters, but... (none / 0)

Obama is going to choose the person that is best qualified to step in for him.  That, above all, is the job description.  He's not going to be afraid of a female or minority choice, but he's also not going to be Affirmative Action about it.

If he chooses a white male, it will be because there are vastly more white males to choose from in searching for his best match.

This is the stupidest excuse for a diary (2.00 / 1)

I've ever seen.  That's your argument?  How about a black male and white woman have each gotten nearly twice as many votes as any other candidate in this race.  (John McCain only has 8.6 million popular votes: http://www.thegreenpapers.com/P08/R.phtm l.)

So if we're going to make this purely about race and gender (which it's not, but I wouldn't put it past a white male to think that), guess what?  White males are a minority in this country.  You need white women to make a majority.  And women of every color and males of every color but white form a majority.

Then a black man will not get the WH (none / 0)

It will prove once and for all, the misogynistic argument from ardent Hillary supporters, during the entire primary process.

And where would the Democrats be after that? Good enough for the House but not for the VP?  Riiiight...

last night some poster was telling people to "die in a chemical fire", over and over again, plus unbelievable pics. I did my best to get him off, along with others, but alas, too many zeros!

Also, the harshness against HRC seems to have increased, not decreased, so it has become like the big orange, so the gang up on TRs and hrs begins to happen.  Is there a wizard to help with trolls?

Another reason why VP may not be female (2.00 / 1)

Right or wrong, I think Obama is thought of as weak and rather metrosexual by many.  A tougher guy like Webb or Biden might supplement this perceived deficiency more than a female candidate.

Re: Another reason why VP may not be female (2.00 / 1)

If any voters think of him as weak, a rugged Veep is just going to make him look weaker.  A woman might actually make him look more macho by comparison.

There are a lot of factors when choosing a veep.

I say the nominee should pick whoever they want (2.00 / 1)

I will vote based on the policies of the nominee not the demographic of the veep.  That said I will be voting a straight ticket in November (except where the race is non partisan like park board).
