The Gas Nazi: No Tax Relief for You!

Cross posted at Pagan Power

Gas Nazi

Barack Obama has taken a stand. He doesn't support lowering your taxes. In fact, he considers doing so a political stunt. What I am of course referring to is his adamant opposition to proposed the federal tax holiday on gasoline this summer. Obama is against it for several reasons, none of them genuine. First he opposed to it because John McCain proposed it. Then he opposed it because Hillary proposed something similar. But instead of offering McCain's deficit increasing measure Hillary insisted it be paid for.

Obama Takes Heat for Opposing Gas Tax Holiday

"Senator Clinton is following Senator McCain's lead. I mean, McCain was the first one to come out with this and Senator Clinton said `me too,'" Obama said.

So poor ole Barack feels tag teamed and as everyone knows, he doesn't like a lot of pressure. Instead he prefers to eat waffles. Or is that just waffle?

A little examination into that elusive record of Senator Obama's reveals a little known fact. He was for a gas tax holiday before he was against it. No wonder John Kerry supports him so readily.

Fact Check: Obama and the gas taxes

Democratic Sen. Barack Obama accuses his presidential rivals of pandering to voters by supporting the "gimmick" of temporarily lifting federal taxes on gasoline, despite his own past support for a similar tax holiday.

As a state legislator voting for a tax break, Obama even joked that he wanted signs on gas pumps telling motorists that he was responsible for lowering prices.

A damned shame something pesky like a fact or two has to enter this debate. Otherwise Senator Obama would be able to bamboozle the rest of us about his support for working families struggling to get by day to day. Because the way Senator Obama sees things this tax break business is just Washington as usual politics.

"This is the problem with Washington. We are facing a situation where oil prices could hit $200 a barrel. Oil companies like Shell and BP just reported record profits for the quarter. And we're arguing over a gimmick that would save you half a tank of gas over the course of the entire summer so that everyone in Washington can pat themselves on the back and say that they did something," Obama says.

Senator Obama seems to be confusing Washington for Chicago style politics. Because by his own admission, that was the purpose of him voting three times to eliminate the gas tax in Illinois. It was a campaign gimmick. And don't think for a moment that Senator Obama was merely joking with his comment.

In 2000, gasoline prices were climbing quickly, reaching $2 a gallon in the Chicago area -- a remarkable price back then. Illinois legislators scrambled to offer some election-year relief to angry motorists.

Obama voted three times for a tax holiday.

The version that ended up becoming law required a six-month suspension of the state's share of the sales tax on gasoline, a 5 percent tax paid directly by consumers rather than gas stations. It also required gas stations to post signs on their pumps saying that the Illinois General Assembly had lowered taxes and the price should reflect that cut.

Senator Obama clearly understands what a political gimmick is. He has plenty of experience participating in them. His voting three times for a tax holiday in Illinois is a prime example. But Obama also likes to project his past experience in Illinois upon Washington D.C.. It's a case of misguided transference. And it is designed to hide his own record in Illinois as well as hoodwink the public so that they don't remember that HE voted for the Bush-Cheney-Obama Energy Bill that put us in this situation to begin with. And his plan? Blame Hillary for playing politics.

He says a tax holiday would provide consumers little real relief, ignore the country's energy problems and take money from road and bridge repairs.

Cue the obnoxious buzzer: Wrong! Hillary's plan DOES NOT take money away from road and bridge repairs. That is John McCain's plan. Hillary pays for the tax relief by taxing the windfall profits of oil companies. Those very same windfall profits that Senator Obama made possible. The very same oil companies that contribute so heavily to his campaign. But I am sure Senator Obama doesn't want you to remember that. He wants to change the subject by attacking Hillary for offering SOME relief to people that are crying out for help. And just what does Senator Obama offer?

Sorry, I  didn't quite hear that. Can you repeat it? Huh? I must be going deaf. Because all I hear are crickets.

Senator Obama likes to demean the concept of offering citizens some relief to the ever increasing fuel prices. He acts as if a 18.4 cent per gallon tax relief is no big deal. That us common folk wouldn't even benefit from it. I wonder if he has seen the long lines of motorists waiting to fill up when the prices at any station are only 10 cents less than the rest? Surely he either hasn't seen it or his elite ass doesn't frickin care. I know plenty of people that will drive 15 miles just to get gas at 15 cents less per gallon than what they pay for in their own neighborhood. PLENTY OF PEOPLE. It isn't unusual. And when people pay less they feel like they have done something good for their family and are willing to spend more on other things thus stimulating the economy.

Now an elitist might not think that way. Perhaps only the price of arugula means something to them. But us regular folk that have to pay for our own transportation and fuel, and have to actually work for a living actually care about the cost of gasoline. And we want, no we demand some relief!

So if Senator Obama is too busy listening to the sound of his own voice that he loves so much to offer ordinary Americans some tax relief we will answer in kind. And hear this clearly Senator Obama: There will be no votes for you!

Re: did he say those things while in the Ill (2.00 / 1)

We all know nothing is going to get done about the escalating price of fuel until after Bush is out of office. Any solution is going to have to include a permanent windfall profits tax on oil companies. Clinton is the only candidate that supports the idea.

In conjunction with the tax, monies will have to be used for research. Mileage standards are going to have to increase in a shorter period of time. Price controls and usage restrictions are going to have to be imposed. All of these things can be done in the short term, but only after Bush is gone.

Unfortunately (none / 0)

No windfall profits tax will pass Congress. Nor will there be enough political will to start cutting into the profits of oil companies to save us money (what would gas cost if the oil companies just broke even for a few years I wonder). Detroit will crush mileage increases too.

Clinton hasn't even proposed legislation to implement her plan so it's pandering at its worst. McCain either.

Maybe next year with a few more Dems in DC things'll be different.

Re: The Gas Nazi: No Tax Relief for You! (none / 0)

Here is a quick political history lesson....

The term "tax relief" was invented by a Right wing spinmeister...  he also gave us the term "death tax"....

Oh, and cutting the gas tax for a "holiday" will have little, if any, effect on gas prices...

The tobacco lobby does the opposite... every time the cigarette tax goes up, thy cut the prices... if the gas tax were eliminated, the gas companies would raise the price to eat up the difference...

Re: Calculator (none / 0)

not the windfall tax, we can't tax business because we think they make to much money, its the whole point of capitalism.

take away their subsidizes and put that money into researching renewable energy. even this gas tax is for 3 months, you save $30 then what? not only are jobs gone, the highway fund is $10 billion shorter (which tax payers WILL pay for) but we are exactly where we are now.

unfortunately there is nothing that will be done with Bush as president he is too close to oil companies and won't allow us to pass anything. we can't do anything until Hillary or Obama wins in November.

but the gas holiday does nothing, read ANY expert on the subject, ask anyone you know who understands supply and demand.

it won't lower gas and makes us worse off. diaries like this distort the issue to make it a hit diary.

but ask him to provide 1 just 1 expert to support this diary and see how long it takes you to get one.

Re: Calculator (none / 0)

Factcheck

The Congressional Research Service later calculated that the oil and gas industry lost more tax breaks than it gained in the 2005 legislation, resulting in a net tax increase that CRS put at $300 million over an 11-year period. Not mentioned by Clinton is the fact that (as we've noted several times before) the $14.3 billion in tax breaks in the bill included large incentives for alternative fuels research and subsidies for energy-efficient cars, homes and buildings. So while Clinton and Obama were on opposite sides, her ad is misleading to suggest that his vote represented support for "Bush Cheney" perks for oil companies.

Re: Calculator (none / 0)

We absolutely can and should tax oil companies who are making 10's of millions of dollars a day of pure profit. Yes it's capitalism, but unfettered capitalism doesn't work. With unfettered capitalism, all you get is a wild, eat or be eaten jungle.

I agree with you on the research into renewable energy. I also agree that, even though Clinton is calling for a windfall profits tax to pay for a tax holiday, there's no chance in hell Bush would ever let it happen. I think Clinton knows it, too. But, what's important is that she is supporting the tax on big oil.

Re: Calculator (none / 0)

People like you believe in the Washington as usual politics while at the same time supporting a candidate that claims to represent something else. Will you at least admit that your guy is an establishment candidate that doesn't want to anger Big Oil from which he has received substantial financing? And that is what and who you support.

There are those who look at things the way they are, and ask why... I dream of things that never were, and ask why not?

Re: The Gas Nazi: No Tax Relief for You! (none / 0)

I'm sure Obama wishes he'd beat Clinton to the punch on the whole tax holiday. I support Hillary Clinton's plan for a tax holiday. We need some relief.  However, I'd make the holiday and windfall profits tax permanent. In addition, price caps should be imposed on gasoline and diesel. Otherwise, oil companies will just raise the price of gasoline. Along with price caps, the government should impose some method of curtailing usage.

Increase fuel economy.

Subidize low income folks to buy more efficient vehicles or to have their cars tuned.

Invest in alternative fuels and hybrid technologies.

Give tax breaks to low income folks and to independent truckers.

I don't disagree with anything you say. But tax breaks in the form of something they can write off their federal taxes doesn't help people in the here and now.

But one point needs to be made about alternative fuels. We need to move away from corn based ethanol fuels and toward cellulosic biofuels.

Thank you for offering solutions. I mean that sincerely.

Re: The Gas Nazi: No Tax Relief for You! (2.00 / 2)

The whole thing is stupid. If there is any legislation in time for vacation season, neither will have much impact on it anyway.  It will have to be discussed by congress and agreed to, and it will be a year from now before anything is done.  I rarely agree with Obama, well okay, I never agree with Obama and did not read his solution. But we should not be encouraging use of gas or stepped up production in this country.  If we keep doing this, we will never be motivated to find alternatives to being kept captive in our lives to oil use which most of the time comes from the middle east and other countries.  We need to free ourselves from depending on gasoline. Making it so that we never feel any pain won't help that to happen. Now, somekind of help for people whose jobs depend on gas, and those who transport food, and all the other things that keep the economy going is a better alternative.  Using the gas tax to provide some subsidy to those people rather than suspending the tax would help with the environmental problems, and also keep prices on products from skyrocketing. The rebate money being provided by the govt can help people pay for their gas, and vacations.  The shame is that we are considering giving oil companies even more profit than they have now, by encouraging people to keep on giving them endless amounts of money for low cost gas.

Re: The Gas Nazi: No Tax Relief for You! (none / 0)

What I found amazing about his speech at that gas pump is how he could put down $30 saved during the summer if this gas holiday is imposed as if it were nothing at all to the many struggling families who've had to skimp on food or other necessities in order to pay for gas.  It's not much, but every little bit helps.
Not that I agree with the gas tax holiday, but that he could be so callous in the manner he's trying to address average american's woe and is kind of elitist.

Re: The Gas Nazi: No Tax Relief for You! (none / 0)

Callous is taking 9 Billion Dollars out of the fund to fix our infrastructure.  9 BILLION is what we would lose by appealing to people's personal greed to the tune of 30 bucks.  A President would say how about this summer everyone drive no faster than 55 which would save oil, save you money, and potentially lower the cost of gas since demand would decrease.  Or how about 3 months where people made a concerted effort to carpool.  Or cut the distance of your family vacation in half.  There are all sorts of steps to take without the callousness of a stunt which could result in another bridge collapsing because the funds weren't there to repair it.

Pelosi has ruled it out because it's BS.

Pelosi said she doesn't believe a summer-long suspension of the 18.4-cents-a-gallon federal gasoline tax would do much to lower gasoline prices.

``There's no reason to believe that a moratorium on the gas tax will be passed on to the consumer,'' Pelosi told reporters in Washington.

Sometimes it takes the will of the people to force Congress into action. I have witnessed it a few times in my life. When Washington as usual politics stands in the way of helping ordinary Americans it is time to rally the people behind a policy that helps them. Because if there is one thing that even politicians fear it is the will of the voters during an election year. I thought that Obama supporters wanted to change politics as usual in Washington? It seems to me that you are defending it or using it as an excuse for inaction.

Ok, so I meant to post that one else where.  How much would Obama save me?  Hmm, I figure more, as he looks for real solutions, not election year gimmicks.  Please, this tax holiday is meaningless, and might cost us serious jobs.

I have a question, how will HRC intend to make up the lost billions this summer?  What about the thousands who might lose their jobs as there would be no highway projects?

Now that I think about it, how much will HRC cost me due to horrid roads that cant be repaired and throw my alignment out?  Or tires being blown out due to pot holes.

So, possibly a lot more than $23.03.  Maybe we should ask how much will HRC and McSame cost me?

Re: Thanks! (none / 0)

It was a compromise bill that even the apollo alliance supported.  As a compromise, it was far from perfect.  But, here are some of the issues and BHO's reasonings:

The Energy bill will do the following:

- Create a Renewable Fuels Standard that will nearly double the amount of ethanol used by 2012.

- Provide up to a $30,000 tax credit for the construction of E85 ethanol fueling stations.

- Provide a $1.8 billion tax credit for investments in clean-coal facilities.

- Provide $85 million to Southern Illinois University, Purdue University, and the University of Kentucky for research and testing on developing Illinois basin coal into transportation fuels.

- Provide $40 million for research on combined plug-in hybrid and E85 flexible fuel vehicles that have the potential to drive 500 miles per gallon of gasoline used.

- Provide incentives to promote biofuels from agricultural resources.

"We could have done more today, and we should do more in the future. We must accept and embrace the challenge of finding a solution to our dependence on foreign oil as one of the most pressing problems of our time. It won't be easy and it won't be without sacrifice, but we owe it to ourselves and to our children so that we can bring down gas prices, protect our environment, and strengthen our national security. This should be one of our top priorities in America."

"So, I vote for this bill reluctantly today, disappointed that we have missed our opportunity to do something bolder that would have put us on the path to energy independence. This bill should be the first step, not the last, in our journey towards energy independence."
