Has Obama Turned The Corner On The Issue of Wright? (With Poll)

I'm interested to find out whether by denouncing Rev. Wright, Obama has 'turned the corner' on the issue?

I present a couple of available poll results below the fold.

If you know of other polls, please post them in the comments section.  Thank you.

1) AOL Hot Seat Poll: Link

By denouncing Rev. Wright, has Obama 'turned the corner' on the issue?

67%  --  No
26% -- Yes
7%  -- Not Sure

Many of the respondents also posted their reasons for voting the way they did.

2)  Rasmussen New Hampshire Poll: Link

Fifty-three percent (53%) of New Hampshire voters have followed news stories about Obama's former Pastor Very Closely. Another 32% have followed the story Somewhat Closely. Most (53%) say that Obama was not surprised by Wright's views expressed to the media on Monday. Only 32% believe the Democratic frontrunner was surprised. A plurality of Democrats (47%) were willing to give Obama the benefit of the doubt on this point, but most unaffiliated voters and an overwhelming percentage of Republicans were not.

Fifty-four percent (54%) of New Hampshire voters say it's at least Somewhat Likely that Obama shares some of Pastor Wright's controversial views about the United States. That figure includes 73% of Republicans, 55% of unaffiliated voters, and 36% of Democrats.

Most voters (56%) say Obama denounced Wright because it was politically convenient. Only 33% believe he was truly outraged.

How about you?  Do you think that Obama has 'turned the corner' on the issue?  Please take the poll below.

You may also post the reason(s) for your vote in the comments section.

Thank you.

Has the.... (none / 0)

media stopped talking about Rev. Wright? The answer is no. It's been a week now.

by soyousay on Thu May 01, 2008 at 03:06:21 PM EST

I think in another week yes (none / 0)

The media will focus on this over the weekend until after the Tuesday primary.

No (2.00 / 1)

The fact that the question is being asked should be more than enough proof.  I would think though at some point people would get tired of hearing it though.  Those bothered by it, have made up their minds one way or the other by this point.

It's not about Wright anymore (1.50 / 2)

It's about Obama standing before America six weeks ago in Philadelphia and saying "trust me".  Americans gave him the benefit of the doubt and got BURNED.  That's a much bigger problem than Wright.

your problem is that (2.00 / 1)

you are too young to understand that the lies you promote about Clinton are just recycled right wing smears from the 90s..... or you don't care.

For Obama it now becomes: Faith, hope and CHANGE! And the greatest of these is Change!

Re: your problem is that (2.00 / 1)

What a unnecessary and pointless way to try to marginalize someone's comment!  True to form, Teresa.

And what are you, like 80?  That guy has two kids.  He can't be that young.

Re: It's not about Wright anymore (none / 0)

That is a meaningless childish way to respond. If you think Clinton and Obama both are liars, then vote for McCain. If you have no way to reduce people's doubt about Obama's honesty, then you should be ashamed. And if you think Obama is not a liar, then help people understand, with your insights, why Wright went from being a friend and mentor for 20 years to a man who can not be denounced a month back to being denounced now.

One of them is lying - Wright or Obama - who is it?

Re: It's not about Wright anymore (none / 0)

Way to take glee in another man's sorrow....You got what you want, the MSM kept blasting the story until there was no choice for Obama.

If you wanna talk about friendly associations the Clinton's may wanna back off of that...Obama has too much class and respect to bring up the likes of  Webb Hubbell?(`90s flashback: He was one of Hillary Clinton's legal partners and closest friends, whom she installed in a top Justice Department job before prosecutors sent him to prison.)

It also includes modern hits like Frank Giustra. (In case you missed it: There was a January New York Times story, which did not get the attention the reporting deserved, highlighting how this Canadian tycoon and major Bill Clinton benefactor was using his ties to the ex-president to win business with a ruthless dictatorship in Khazakstan.)

Obama has never pressed Clinton to talk about Marc Rich, even though the former fugitive financier who won a controversial pardon from Bill Clinton gave money to her first Senate campaign.

He has never mentioned her brothers, even though Hugh and Tony Rodham once defied Bill Clinton's own top foreign policy advisers by entering into a strange investment in hazelnuts in the former Soviet republic of Georgia and Hugh Rodham took large cash payments for trying to broker presidential pardons.

And don't forget a Newsday story  at her legal career -- including the revelation that as a young lawyer she attacked the credibility of a 12-year-old rape victim.

Re: It's not about Wright anymore (none / 0)

Well Hillary's picture has already been painted. If you call her a liar, many people will just say "yeah yeah" and move on.

Obama's picture is being painted now and if people start perceving him as a liar who used Wright for political gains, that picture can come out pretty evil (dark from Kos's perspective).

I agree with your first sentence. We should not take glee in another person's (i avoid man or woman) sorrow. Unfortunately, people forget that there is a mirror in every house.

Re: Has Obama (2.00 / 1)

No he hasn't and it will be an issue along with others that tie into the "bad judgement" and "anti american" narrative the GOP has set up for Obama if he's the nominee.

It'll stop when he either loses the nomination or loses the general election.

If Obama's Turned the Corner, (none / 0)

Wright followed him around it.

Right now Obama is bleeding white support.  Whether it's due to Wright alone, I dunno.  But it's a trend over the past week.  Speech or no speech, Sen. Obama.

More importantly, it appears, Hillary's turned the corner with Bill.  He's been kept off stage during the past week and her mojo's rising.

Re: If Obama's Turned the Corner, (none / 0)

Obama can turn the corner, Wright will take a shortcut and meet him at the next corner called GE.

Re: Has Obama Turned The Corner On The Issue of Wr (none / 0)

Are we seriously discussing a diary that leads with an AOL online poll? The Rasmussen one is legit, but come on... Standards people.

As for "turned the corner", in the common parlance where it means "has changed direction" I would say yes; I think it's bottomed out. But I do think it'll have some legs as yet, so if "turned the corner" means it's done, then no.
