Mark Penn NOT REALLY Stepping Down: Smoke & Mirrors Hotlist

Rumors of Mark Penn's demise have been greatly exaggerated. I am writing this diary to try to set the record straight.

Mark Penn did not resign. Mark Penn was not fired. In fact, this is just another bit of smoke and mirrors from the Clinton campaign. From TheNation:

CLINTON DROPS PENN, SORT OF... After months of criticism and allegations of conflicts of interest swirling around Mark Penn, Hillary Clinton's "chief strategist," the Clinton Campaign announced on Sunday that Penn is losing his title.

Clinton's tax returns were released Friday. People are poring over them, and they're finding things that she didn't really want us to notice.

Hillary was caught in another lie last night saying that she was criticizing the war in Iraq before Obama was.

And then there's the news that Mark Penn was meeting with Colombia about a free trade deal. And of course Colombia promptly fired Mark Penn's firm after Mark Penn apologized for meeting with them.

So now we get the news that Mark Penn has been fired or resigned (various reports say one or the other). But only that's not really true. They're just taking away his title, he's still going to be doing the job:

After the events of the last few days, Mark Penn has asked to give up his role as Chief Strategist of the Clinton Campaign; Mark, and Penn, Schoen and Berland Associates, Inc. will continue to provide polling and advice to the campaign. Geoff Garin and Howard Wolfson will coordinate the campaign's strategic message team going forward.

Notice that Garin and Wolfson will only be coordinating the message. They won't be developing it, creating it, or managing it. Huge difference. Ask anyone who's worked in middle or upper management -- these words are chosen very carefully, and coordinating is a much lesser role.

A story saying that Mark Penn has been fired or resigned helps to soften the hit Hillary is taking on the story of Mark Penn meeting with the Colombian government to work with them on getting a trade deal with the U.S. You can bet every time she's asked about it from here on out, she'll be answering, "Well, Mark Penn is no longer my chief strategist." But the fact is, they just changed his title for appearances.

This is smoke and mirrors folks. This is an attempt to manage the news cycle going into Sunday night and Monday. Nothing has changed except the media message.

Hillary should not be able to look the American people in the eye and tell them that she got rid of Mark Penn due to his conflicts of interest when, in fact, she never bothered to get rid of him. And this news story should not be allowed to push off the news stories about her taxes.

KUDOS . . . I was getting all excited, but he will still be in the room . . . and he will still be getting paid.

The PA unions will not stand for his anti-labor firm!!

Re: Mark Penn NOT REALLY (2.00 / 1)

And not just saving face, but also buying some silence. Hillary Clinton is fully aware of the forces arrayed against her, and the she also knows that it's better not to create additional enemies at this point in time. Witness how Dick Morris responded to his dismissal from the Clinton White House -- anyone who has anything bad to say about a Clinton, true or false, will be well compensated for his dirt. Since political consultants, as a class, are an amoral lot, she probably handled this severance as well as she could have.

He WILL have a lower profile.

I'll miss those abrasive attacks.

This hurts HRC, because the community that I volunteer in (Delaware County, PA) doesn't even know who Mark Penn is. Now they will find out who he is, what he is doing . . . and how anti-labor his firm is.

Ahh, if only she'd done this several months ago. I feel it's too little, too late now.

Chase the money (1.00 / 1)

Of course he is not going to leave. She owes him money like she owes $9million to other vendors.

In fact, this is one of the best measures that her failed campaign is winding down. When you start to those owed money beginning to be paid. Always chase the money.

Re: Mark Penn NOT REALLY Stepping Down: & (none / 0)

More of the same from the Clinton's. I'm so glad I realized in time how bad Hillary would be as our Nominee. I really wanted to support her as a woman but the last month has changed my mind. The Clinton's have become too crooked and will just squabble endlessly with the vast right wing conspiracy and nothing will ever change- AGAIN. Someday we will have a woman President, just not this one.  And the more I listened and learned about Obama I realized just how transformational he could be as President. Just open your mind and give him a chance.

Your Diary is very similar to other website (2.00 / 1)

Your dairy is much similar (word to word) to Dawnt's dairy at Dailykos. Unless you're the same person wouldn't it be nice to atleast refer it?
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/4/6/2 0620/63110/928/489260

Secondly the Nation article and the dairy makes ironically a Clintonian parsing argument on whether Maggie Williams' memo actually is an announcement of Mark Penn's resignation. In my world, a company providing polling data and advice is very much different than the CEO of the company actively involved in the campaign as Chief Strategist.

Re: Your Diary is very similar to other website (2.00 / 2)

Evidently I had an old account here that I setup a long time ago, but I never really wrote diaries here. So, when I started posting here (seriously only a few days ago), I couldn't sign up for an account. Once I realized I already had an account with a different user name (I use Zoey when I want to be anonymous), I tried changing it to dawnt, but I can't figure out how. If anyone knows how I can change my username, please let me know. I don't really care about being anonymous here.

Thanks!

Push comes to pull (none / 0)

Remember Shaheen?  First he resigned, and then Hillary said she fired him.

Did Penn step out, tired of being blamed for Hillary's losses?  Or did she push him out, tired of being blamed for her losses?

But, since he isn't really out, and will still play an advisory role, I can't imagine the unions will be happy with this.

I can see the next headlines: Hillary fires Penn again.

Penn is gone - get over it (none / 0)

Give me a break.  Are you serious in that you can't read between the lines? This is no different than a director leaving a movie because of "creative differences" - code for "I got fired, but we're trying to save me some embarrassment".

We all know that Hillary and everything she does is nefarious, but this is ridiculous.

Mark Halperin:

Although the campaign's statement announcing Penn's departure as chief strategist suggested he would continue to give advice to her effort, it is impossible to overstate how fundamental a change this represents in Clinton's campaign.

And as for your bizarre word parsing nonsense about the difference between "manager" and "coordinate", try this:

Communications director Howard Wolfson and pollster Geoff Garin will direct the campaign's message and strategic efforts for the campaign going forward, Williams said.

Is directing the campaign's message good enough for you, or should Hillary have Penn drawn and quartered and then launched into space?

We all know that Penn sucks. And now he's done.  Finished. Kaput.

And while we're firing losers, why not encourage Obama to fire  Robert Gibbs? He's just as unsavory as Penn, if not more so.

I doubt anyone can convince you of anything you don't want to believe, but here's a little more for you.  Maybe this will make you understand that Penn is no more:

The Wall Street Journal reported Friday that Penn, who serves as chief executive of public relations giant Burson-Marsteller, met with Colombian officials March 31 to help craft strategy to move the Colombian Free Trade agreement through Congress. Penn later issued a statement apologizing for the meeting, calling it an "error in judgment."
But the apology evidently wasn't sufficient. Aides said both Hillary and Bill Clinton were deeply angry upon hearing of the meeting and that Penn was quickly pushed to leave.
The trade deal flap effectively ended an unusually tight relationship between Penn and both Clintons since Penn was recruited to provide polling and strategic advice to Bill Clinton's re-election campaign in 1996.

Emphasis is mine.

RE: Robert Gibbs (none / 0)

Ok, so I read your comment, then your diary. The first thing I'd like to point out is that you didn't bother to give any sources whatsoever. But that's ok, I decided this was an issue worth investigating.  Contrary to your diary entry, he was not the head of the organization. He was the spokesperson. So, his responsibility for the ad is really an unknown factor (unless you've got a source that says otherwise, and please don't point me back to another diary entry, I need a reliable source). However, I will grant that just working for that organization as a spokesperson should be enough to warrant an apology from Gibbs to Dean.
