I Hope!

After the 2000 election I woke up and wondered how almost half of the U.S. voting population could have voted for such an idiot making the election so close that the SCOTUS could have the opportunity to award the job of POTUS to a blithering idiot like George W. Bush. The one thing I never lost was hope. I believed that the American people would see what I saw and right this wrong.

In 2004 I was an Edward's supporter, I hoped he would get the nomination. He didn't  John Kerry did. Yet still I had hope. I showed up  cast my ballot for Kerry and hoped he would pull it off.  He didn't!

I have never lost hope that this country would do the right thing.I have never had a shortage of hope. Hope is a foundation of the way I was raised, I hope poor children will not go to bed hungry, I hope abused women will find the means to escape their abusers, I hope the victims of Katrina will receive the help they need to get their lives back. I hope that my 83 year old neighbor will be able to quit working thirty hours a week to supplement her meager retirement . I hope that our soldiers can safely be withdrawn from Iraq soon.

Well today New Orleans and it's citizens are still struggling to rebuild their lives and their city. Yesterday thousands of poor children went to bed hungry and  hundreds of women were beaten and some were killed by their abusive partners. This morning my 83 year old neighbor got up and went to work to subsidize the cost of her prescription drugs and keep food on her table. Today our soldiers are still being maimed and wounded in Iraq. Despite  all of the money I have given, all the time I have spent working, all the votes I have cast. Yet still I have hope.

I don't need a President who will give me hope I already have hope. I have never given up hope. I need a President who will give me solutions that can work. Not half measures and vague ideals like hope and change, not plans that are impractical if not impossible. I want action. I want a grunt who will work for me and the people I mention. I want a President who does more than give me hope, I want results!

After all as the old saying goes " Hope in one hand and sh*t in the other! See which fills up first!

The good news is, you'll get that from both candidates. Your diary is well-written, and I respect your position.

But I did want to explain Obama's "hope" message a bit. In his campaign's context, hope means America can do better, we can believe in our promise again. There is hope for a better, more fair country.

It's not, "I'll hope my foreclosure away" or "I hope we can get out of Iraq before 2100." There are policies to back it up, and for the most part, Obama and Clinton are very similar on most issues.

Hillary has done an excellent job positioning herself against Obama with the "solutions, not hope" angle. It's very good political strategy.
But like all strategies and campaign slogans, it necessarily takes some liberties with the opponent's message.

And just so you know, in my past life as an Edwards supporter, I had the same concerns as you. I thought hope was just a bland slogan designed to mask a candidate's deficiencies. But after familiarizing myself with Obama, I realized there's far more to it than that. "Hope" is only the vehicle to carry his message, a one-word summation of a progressive platform.

I guess you missed this part: "I have never lost hope that this country would do the right thing."
