Obama's Downticket Dilemma

So much for Barack Obama's "downticket" advantage that his campaign has touted.

As reported by Mark Halperin of The Page:

Travis Childers, who is running for Congress in northern Mississippi, is responding to attacks on his Obama ties from the NRCC and his opponent with an ad backing away from the Illinois Senator.

TV spot says: "Senator Obama hasn't endorsed my candidacy. I have not been in contact with his campaign nor has he been in contact with mine."

NRCC spokesman responds: "His new television ad not only says a lot about himself, but also about the toxicity an Obama candidacy can bring to Democratic campaigns down-ballot."

And from Mississipi's Daily Journal:

Today, Childers is releasing a new TV ad saying his family "has heard the lies and attacks linking me to politicians I don't know and have never even met."

In a Tuesday news release, Childers accused Davis of being a hypocrite because he criticized Childers for not saying anything about Wright's comments but said nothing on his own Web site to condemn the preacher.

Davis is pressing Childers about the apparent endorsement from the Obama campaign e-mailed to Obama supporters in the 1st District...

Childers insists he didn't ask for Obama's support and he deflected a question of whether he would accept his endorsement.

"Let me tell you what kind of endorsements we're looking for ... endorsements from the working people of North Mississippi, working families," Childers told a Memphis TV station in a story about the attack ad.

This must be bad news for the Obama campaign, especially as it seeks to lock up the all-important Superdelegate endorsements.  It's hard to believe that Obama's rejection of Rev. Wright yesterday will make much difference because obviously Obama was well aware of Rev. Wright's positions for 20 years, and is only now "divorcing" him because it's politically necessary.

And you think MS candidates will be cozying up to Clinton?

Superdelegates today:
Obama 3
Clinton 2

Most of the super delegates who have endorsed endorsed early. I honestly think that many of the ppl who came out for Obama early are questioning their decision now...

and more importantly, so are the voters.

Re: Miss. Candidate's Ad Distances himself from OB (none / 0)

Yeah and they came out early for CLINTON (200 before January).  The people who have been endorsing Obama have been consistently doing so over tha past several months.  He has received nearly 100 superdelegate endorsements since Feb.  So I don't think people are questioning their support for Obama, but I know they are questioning their support for Clinton, b/c several have already switched their allegiances from her to him.

The CW is shifting (2.00 / 1)

It's still slow though.  There's still a lot of red state politicians who are still stuck in the February mindset that Obama will deliver the unity pony.  Those facing voters TODAY know the reality on the ground.

Re: Miss. Candidate's Ad Distances himself from OB (2.00 / 2)

Childers is distancing himself from Democrats, not just for Obama. Watch the ad, it basically says "I'm not a Democrat." I can't blame him, look at his district. But to think this is representative of most candidates is naive. Obama will help down-ticket in competitive districts. This race is an anomaly. There are very few other races in the country that are competitive in such heavily rural, conservative, Republican districts.

Re: Miss. Candidate's Ad Distances himself from OB (none / 0)

I think the truth is that Obama would help some down ticket races while he would hurt other down ticket races. The same can be said for Clinton. We can argue about how much who would help whom but it's pretty academic.

The main focus now is who can win the White House. Clinton has edge just now but in a week the pendulum might swing.

Obama is starting to look like a downticket (none / 0)

disaster.  I expect that if Clinton wins IN and does well in NC and then kicks his ass in several other states,  SDs who have endorsed him will switch.

For Obama it now becomes: Faith, hope and CHANGE! And the greatest of these is Change!

And Hillary was, is and always will be a downticket disaster, Teresa.  She'll NEVER have coattails.  Folks running down here in Louisiana will be running from her all day long.

Re: Miss. Candidate's Ad Distances himself (none / 0)

The ad that repugs would use against Childers on Hillary would have been a lot worse and probably would have been related to Bill.

Re: Miss. Candidate's Ad Distances himself (none / 0)

Hardly. And if they did people would see beyond that. No one wants to go through that again and the repubs know it. it's old dirt.

That ad was not him saying he was not a democrat. it was Childers saying that someone implying that Obama endorsed him was an attack and a smear.

He is running from Obama as fast and hard as he can and I bet he won't be the only one.

Childers is hardly a Democrat. (none / 0)

"Childers is seen as a conservative Democrat. One Mississippi Republican operative labeled him "more conservative than 85 percent of Republicans.""
From Wikipedia.org
I don't think Childers would want to be associated with Hillary Clinton either.
It is a sad day when people like Childers are considered Democrats.
In the GE, the only coat tails Childers will ride are McCain's.

My thoughts on McCain: I have no desire to let that idiot fulfill his desire to "Bomb Iran"
