Blitzer Lies about Clinton Plan

Wolf Blitzer owes Clinton an apology.

He ran the slimiest piece of propaganda I have seen in this primary.

He is misinforming CNN viewers about Clinton's proposal to relieve consumers of gas tax.

The report told how Clinton wants to suspend tax on gas. But it went on to lament that this tax money goes toward restoring aging city infrastructure -  so that we do not have disasters like the Minneapolis Bridge collapse.

Then, to show viewers just what a huge hypocrite Clinton is, they ran a clip of her saying that we must do more for updating our cities aging infrastructure.

Of course, the reporter OMITTED the most important part of her plan:  She would make up the lost revenue by imposing a "windfall profits tax" on oil companies - who are making money hand over fist, while the rest of us suffer.

It is becoming harder and harder to see difference between CNN and Fox News.

What a great idea.. (none / 0)

we should have had that windfall profits tax ages ago...

Or maybe we DID..didn't we?

CNN really deserves a big, boisterous demonstration outside their offices, between Wolf Blitzer's lies and the Fatal Attraction remarks they are going into the gutter for BO.

I wonder if "Clean Coal" (2.00 / 1)

which airs ads constantly on CNN, is behind some of this.

Re: Blitzer Lies about Clinton Plan (1.00 / 2)

Blitzer is right on the money.  Hillary is just trying to get votes with a cheap gimick.  To me she is being very irresponsible to senior citizens who will need the gas taxes to help suplement their heating and air conditioning bills.

This is it.  I'm tired of them playing the Axe for Camp Obama and distorting and  lying about Senator Clinton.

I hope everyone writes and NOW demanding an apology on the air from Blitzer.

But Hillary wants to suspend the gas tax for THIS SUMMER, yet there won't be any windfall profits tax then.

Re: Blitzer Lies about Clinton Plan (none / 0)

So all she has to do is get a single bill passed, containing both the meaningless tax cut (that will encourage consumption cause that's what we need to do) and the windfall profits tax, which the Republicans should let slide through with a wink and a nod, and get it signed by Bush....

That's a corker of a plan!!

That's bad but so is her plan. (2.00 / 1)

So sayeth Krugman and other economists. The gas prices would shoot right back up because demand would increase.

Re: That's bad but so is her plan. (none / 0)

Which is completely false.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elasticity_(economics)

(cannot get MyDD to properly recognize this link, so you'll have to copy-and-paste)

Notice that gasoline is used as a textbook example of a commodity whose consumption does not change much in response to changes in price.

Also, from this study:

The current gasoline prices are likely to have a large impact on consumer spending but a much smaller impact on the amount of gasoline purchased.  Instead, the effect is likely to be felt in other areas of spending (e.g., vacations, entertainment, electronics, or eating out).

Krugman made a serious ommission in his recent piece.  I have written and asked for him to issue a correction, or at least clarify what he had intended to say.

Apparently Krugman is a genius when it comes to the psychology of Obama and his supporters & the politics of health care policy but economics isn't his strong suit.

Re: That's bad but so is her plan. (none / 0)

Actually I never said that all economists are wrong.

Nor did I say Hillary is right.

What I said is that economists who tell you that gasoline consumption will fluctuate in response to small, short-term variations in price are wrong.

Nice try at strawman though.

Re: That's bad but so is her plan. (none / 0)

heresjohnny said other economists agree, and asked if they were ALL off base.  You said "yes."

I'll grant that you didn't mean all economists, everywhere, but neither did I.  I suppose I should have said "all economists who've weighed in on the matter."  Either way, the willingness to embrace economists when they agree with us and to push them away when they don't is troubling, especially since the HRC campaign seems to have an economist on the shelf to tout her plans and/or to slam Obama's.

Re: Blitzer Lies about Clinton Plan (none / 0)

Blitzer is pretty fair - contact CNN and they will issue a correction.  This was probably a (serious) oversight on his part.

by bobbank on Tue Apr 29, 2008 at 07:51:41 PM EST

This was no oversight (2.00 / 1)

The report was planned around showing hillary as a hypocrite who said she wanted something done about our aging urban infrastructure, yet would take away the funding as a cheap political gimmick.
The whole report was misinformation from start to finish.

Re: Blitzer Lies about Clinton Plan (2.00 / 2)

Blitzer is an idiot, but both Clinton and McCain's "plans" are little more than transparent pandering.  Didn't we already send out untargeted, regressive, free money with the "stimuls" package?  I don't think an extra $30 is really going to make much of a difference.  Especially since HRC's "plan" has a 0% chance of passing before summer.

by HSTruman on Tue Apr 29, 2008 at 07:56:57 PM EST

I thought Fox News (2.00 / 1)

to Hillary supporters, was the most 'fair and balanced?'

I didn't watch the clip so I can't comment on it specifically. It maybe that he and anyone with half a brain realizes that the idea that you're going to get a windfalls tax passed is beyond the realm of possibility. This entire discussion is a farce. A cheap political stunt designed to play on the very real damage that high gas prices have caused to working class Americans. Everyone sees right through it.

Not really.

Re: Blitzer Lies about Clinton Plan (2.00 / 1)

Dont bother, there is a huge love fest going on right now for Fox news.

Because they smear and attack Hillary and Obama equally, they are just peachy in the books of people like little otter, Lombard, DaveOinSF, CanadianGal, Benjamin3, etc etc.

lets get ready for oblivion,  thanks to Obama AND HRC, we are now likely stuck with a right wing smear machine.

Did we forget the first 2 years of Bill Clintons presidency,  now history will repeat itself.

I guarntee you the NEW NEOCON movement will be fueled by many "conservative" democrats on this site.

They will defect once Obama wins, and will be just as powerfull as the many stars we got from their side since Bush took office.

I guess Fox News will be our official new fav channel.

Seems in alot of other threads that people like Bill Oreilly more than Keith Olberman.

With these attacks on CNN,  I guess Fox is the only channel we can turn to.

I mean, the only thing Fox did was let Bill O Reilly buy himself out of a sexual harassment lawsuit.

Pandering pure and simple (2.00 / 2)

Clinton's plan amounts to about $30 in the pocket of the average gas customer. She says she'll implement a windfall profits tax, but the gas holiday would be "this" summer, and there is zero chance of her getting a windfall profits tax passed at the very least until she's President (sometime in another lifetime, but let's be kind). Which means that she's advocating taking all that money out of the highway trust fund at the time our highways, bridges, and other infrastructure is falling apart. Sounds like pandering anything to get elected to me.
