Could there be riots in Minnesota?

You might have heard the furor this week over Rush Limbaugh dreaming about riots at the Democratic National Convention in Denver. I think this ridiculous comment will be forgotten before the two parties convene their respective conventions in over four months. The Republicans might have their own mild riots this September in Minnesota thanks to Dr. Ron Paul. The outspoken obstetrician earned a surprising 16% of the GOP vote in the PA Primary. The TX Congressman may have downsized his campaign staff, but that team is still on a mission to be heard at the Republican National Convention.

While they'll likely be stymied from having much impact on the platform, Paul supporters are hopeful their guy will secure a speaking slot -- and hint that they may stage a visible distraction to McCain and the GOP if their request is not fulfilled.

"We remain hopeful and would be honored if the RNC would extend a speaking invitation," (Ron Paul spokeman Jesse) Benton said. "If that doesn't happen, Dr. Paul will have an off-site presence and will address supporters." - http://www.politico.com/news/stories/040 8/9886.html

I doubt Senator McCain will forget how Paul embarrassed him at one of their Primary debates. Is the 'Maverick' going to allow the Libertarian a speaking slot at the convention? I think we will hear Dr. Paul speak in Minnesota, but it WILL NOT be inside the Minnesota convention. The GOP paid the price after allowing Pat Buchanan to give his 'culture war' speech in 1992. I think they have learned from that mistake.

Benton suggested that how Paul is treated by the party at the convention and beyond may dictate what becomes of the Texas congressman's supporters in November.

"If they reach out and are accepting, a lot of people are going to stay with the Republicans. If they shun us, a lot of people will stay home, walk away or go third party," Benton said.

I suspect that we will see Ron Paul and his horde of supporters rally behind the probable Libertarian candidate, former Congressman Bob Barr of Georgia. Don't forget that, according to FEC filings, Ron Paul had more money (about $5 million) available to cause havoc in the Primary season that lasts until the Convention. That is more money than last year's front-runners Hillary Clinton & Rudy Giuliani, who are still repaying campaign debts. The Ron Paul movement will also be energized by the release of his new book "The Revolution: A Manifesto" next week.

I think Democrats should quietly applaud this movement, instead of ridiculing the power of Ron Paul. Bob Barr could put a red state in play for the DEMS, and Ron Paul's base could keep a purple state out of reach for the GOP. A simple sway of 3% of the vote from McCain can solidify an electoral victory for either Democrat in November.

Poll
I think Ron Paul
will hurt McCain's chances in the GE.
will rally his base behind McCain.
will fade away.

They should let Ron Paul speak at the GOP convention--he will scare any indepdents away from ever registering as Republicans.

Re: Could there be riots in Minnesota? (2.00 / 0)

It is a win-win for DEMS!

Let him speak . . . and McCain's message gets distracted.

Don't let him speak . . . and his supporters WILL cause a media event, and back Bob Barr.

I've also said that anyone who can stomach it should donate to Bob Barr for the GE. And we want to make sure he gets on the ballot in as many states as possible, especially swing states. If this thing is close because either Obama's supporters or Hillary's supporters decide to sulk in November, I think Barr could swing the election for us, no joke.

Good, we all need to be doing that sort of thing. Even people who can't quite handle donating to him can help in other ways.

The Libertarian (none / 0)

party is on the ballot in 48 states according to George Will (I saw the article at the end of Newsweek I can't remember the date right now) with a good chance of getting on in WV and no hope of getting on it OK.

I would say that a lot of us (2.00 / 0)

Minnesotans are planning to protest anyways.  From the people that I know I would say 10% are planning to protest (I am in Minneapolis to this isn't representative of the whole state), but I assure you there will be a lot of protestors in St. Paul (I'll be there and will be very respectable (fully dressed up and hitting McCain over health insurance reform due to my status as a med student.

Re: Could there be riots in Minnesota? (2.00 / 0)

Ron Paul is probably the best gift to Democrats this year, but don't mis-interpret his PA primary showing. Very few "normal" people actually voted in the R primary, so his support was inflated, but he does control a solid 5% of their party, and that is a 5% which very likely will never be coming back

Re: Could there be riots in Minnesota? (none / 0)

SUSA has McCain ahead of Obama in TX 47 to 46.

Paul supporters in TX could easily tip this RED state into play . . . and that WOULD DESTROY any chances the GOP have!!

Yes, there will be riots if the Minneapolis police (none / 0)

The Republican pervert crew will go crazy if they can't find high-paid escorts to diaper and whip them.

Re: Could there be riots in Minnesota? (none / 0)

No.
Minnesotans do not riot.

They are all Lutherans. They wear Hushpuppies and vacation at Lake Woebegone. The most exciting thing ever to happen in Minnesota was when Ernie Andersen got a hole in one back in 1957.

by johnnygunn on Sat Apr 26, 2008 at 06:22:25 PM EST

No all of us in MN (2.00 / 1)

are like that.  There is a 3% chance for full out riots in MN based on my talking to students here at the U of MN.  There is a lot of frustration about the bridge collapse and our state leaders caring more about the RNC than us.  Especially if T-Paw is on the ticket, we will be outraged.

Ron Paul would hurt US (none / 0)

because on the main issues for which people actually vote Ron Paul, Iraq and civil liberties, he is a liberal. People voting for him were not gonna vote GOP this fall anyway. it would be a big mistake, no a HUGE mistake to hope he runs.

Re: Ron Paul would hurt US (none / 0)

Ron Paul is not the one running, but we can hope that he points his followers to Bob Barr. This will give Barr some legitimacy amongst Conservatives pissed off at McCain.

All we need is a few percentage points in 2 or 3 states to make a difference.
