Howard Dean's Superdelegate Double Standard

Much has been made of Dr. Dean's exhortation to superdelegates to make up their minds. Nancy Pelosi and Donna Brazille, among others, have made similar entreaties of the supers. They have the right to express their opinion on this matter, but their pleas ring hollow because they are themselves superdelegates.

For months the three of them have been feigning neutrality in the Hillary-Obama contest. While fooling nobody, their "neutrality" supposedly gives them the moral authority to ask for decisions from the supers.

If this unholy trinity wants to be taken seriously they must come out of the closet. They are all superdelegates. Dr. Dean, Speaker Pelosi, Ms. Brazille, lead by example! Make your own preferences known; only then you will have the right to tell the other superdelegates what to do and when to do it. Until then SYFPH!

Howie's up his own creek (2.00 / 1)

he's going back on himself, there are more reasons for this to go forward than to stall it now.  For one, it's free publicity for us, McCain can hardly get press, and George is even worse off, it's like they don't exit and no one cares. It's a real fifty-state strategy and that's Howie's and Barack's by toady thang.  Our issues are out there, and the pugs aren't.  He hasn't any consistency, since Kerry and Kennedy's state when for HIllary. But I guess Howard knows he's played it stupidly and in for a penny in for a pound.  He can say what he likes, only Hilary and Barack are getting press.

ZING!

And snark ... kind of.

Re: Howard Dean's Superdelegate Double Standard (none / 0)

no, no, no. the michigan ballot had "uncommitted" on it. you know, "uncommitted" as in howard dean and donna brazile's alleged status in this nomination process. ZING!!! ;-)

the obama people were supposed to vote for "uncommitted".  don't tell me john conyers spent all that money on radio ads and you didn't get the message.

btw, if you ever see "uncommitted", tell him the girl kicked his ass. he's probably getting used to it by now ;-)

Kucinich, Dodd and Gravel were on the MI ballot too.

Re: Howard Dean's Superdelegate Double Standard (none / 0)

Those three can't come out and support Obama like they want to, because they have to pretend Hillary still has a chance.

I know what will happen if Democrats don't win the presidency November 4th: we'll all regret the infighting, and it will be too late.
by DemUnity on Wed Apr 23, 2008 at 03:29:14 PM EST

Yeah, right... (2.00 / 3)

They won't admit the obvious... Even AFTER Hill won Pennsylvania. They're already trying to force Hill out of the race, but they think they can get away with it by pretending to be "neutral". So what? More people in ALL THE STATES that have voted so far have chosen Hillary... Why must we all be ignored? If Obama can't even earn a simple plurality of the vote, then what entitles him a "coronation"?

No way, no how, no McCain! :-)

Re: Yeah, right... (none / 0)

Hillary has the most votes only if Obama receives none in MI, and if caucus states are undercounted.

But come NC, he will be way ahead again. Should the supers decide then.

Double Standard (2.00 / 1)

they're pretending she hasn't a chance and they're pretending to be neutral. Donna won 't get as many gigs if she endorses, she's pretending to be the voice of neutral. But has anyone else noticed those fools are pissing in the wind, no one is listening to them, the voters know it's about us and we aren't about to take advice from the pundits.  Hillary will win if the voters keep voting for her. She's now ahead in the popular vote and I predict that her lead will only grow.  I also predict that Barack will drop out, so as to not have to lose.  He'll do it because he wants to and not because he's told to?

Re: Howard Dean's Superdelegate Double Standard (2.00 / 4)

Again, IF this was any other DNC Chair, Dailykos would be leading the charge for Dean's resignation.

Bloggers in MYDD would be demanding his resignation.

Dean has done a Very Poor Job on this 2008 primary.

If this was Terry M. or Joe Andrews, liberals would be going nuts on how MI & FL was handled.

by labanman on Wed Apr 23, 2008 at 03:29:36 PM EST

Bullshit. (none / 0)

You can't hang MI or FL on Dean.  The state legislatures knew what they were doing, and you are only playing into their deception by saying this.

Dean is the best thing to happen to the Democratic party in many decades.

Re: Bullshit. (2.00 / 1)

Do you know what the automatic penalty was for timing violations?

It is a reduction of that states delegates by 50%. In other words the primary still counts, it just counts less. Neither legislature considered that another faslsely neutral Obama surrogate, Ralph Dawson would make a motion to change the automatic sanction of 50% reduction to 100% thereby not seating them at all.

Also Florida had valid reasons for the timing violation. Such reasons are listed in the rules. Iowa and New Hampshire also moved their primaries out of the Rules and Bylaw Committees original calendar for no reason other than self serving ones. Yet the RBC granted them waivers.

Please read the rules and the RBC transcripts before pontificating on the rules.

Terry threatened Michigan with the exact penalty they received when they were considering moving up their primary in 2004.

This race is long over, so why not declare. (none / 0)

I'm all for it.

by dystopianfuturetoday on Wed Apr 23, 2008 at 03:29:36 PM EST

As head of the DNC (none / 0)

it would be a disaster if he were to declare.

He needs to remain neutral, at least in name, in order to have any standing as someone able to broker a deal.

I will however give it to you on Donna Brazille- she should declare.

What I find absolutely disgusting is you referring to them as the unholy trinity though. It is completely despicable. I suppose you would rather have a bunch of DLC people in positions of power within the party...

ENOUGH!
by JDF on Wed Apr 23, 2008 at 03:30:34 PM EST

Dean, at least, can't (none / 0)

As head of the DNC he's not supposed to. Same may be true of Pelosi. Brazille probably could.

Re: Howard Dean's Superdelegate Double Standard (2.00 / 3)

Brazile, Dean, Raschel M., Keith O. Pelosi- ALL CLAIM to be Non-Partisan.

But every single one is a die hard bleeding Obama supporter.

See shit like this, you can get away with in a liberal/black dominated dem primary.

But come GE in November, the entire crew can go all out for Obama. It won't mean a thing is swaying voters.

I hope Pelosi visits Ohio & Missouri in November to campaign for Obama. She can bring Randi Rhodes with her too.

by labanman on Wed Apr 23, 2008 at 03:33:37 PM EST

Dean's Double Standard (2.00 / 4)

I never thought of it from that angle.

Nice point.

by bobbank on Wed Apr 23, 2008 at 03:39:47 PM EST

Me, neither... (2.00 / 3)

But the diarist has a good point. If Dean, Brazile, & Pelosi want all the supers to decide ASAP, then why don't they just announce their decision NOW? We already know their decision... Why can't they stop feigning "neutrality"?

Is Dean afraid he'd get more heat over screwing up Michigan & Florida? Is Pelosi afraid that she'll have to forefit her position as President of the 2008 Convention? Is Brazile afraid CNN will stop giving her a platform to shout out her musings as a "neutral" super? Why can't all 3 jst announce?

Re: Howard Dean's Superdelegate Double Standard (2.00 / 4)

Rachel and Keith are not superdelegates.  They just have superegos.

by JustJennifer on Wed Apr 23, 2008 at 03:42:10 PM EST

Re: Howard Dean's Superdelegate Double Standard (none / 0)

no I agree with others, Dean can't endorse yet, once the leader of the DNC endorses, its holds alot of meaning.

he controls alot and it basically tells all the other supes

"yeah, I am not even pretending anymore that Hillary has a chance, its Obama"

with Gore also leaning to Obama, the last thing Hillary wants is for Pelosi, Dean and Gore

3 of the highest endorsements left to all go to Obama.

Obama said, as Bill beamed. "Thank you, President Clinton."
