Whoa, I think I just saw Michael Steele lose his job!

On Brit Hume's Flagtastic Election center, they've been asking how much "racial prefernece" effects black canidates, and their go to guy was RNC (chair?) Michael Steele, who said soemthing that was both unfortunately true, and perhaps a career killer:

" When i ran for the Senate in Maryland I discounted 20% of my base because they simply wont vote for a black man."

I'm a bit shocked, I mean isn't this the sort of thing that ends careers (I would hope its not true to this marghin on our side, I'd think its around 10% of dems that wont ever vote for a black uy) he basically said that 1/5 of the GOP is out and out cross-bruning stlye racists.

Also, I would argue that even most mainstream Republicans would admit that is the truth. If 10% of Dems are unwilling to vote b/c of some racial hangups, I would imagine the number among the GOP must be higher.

I have meet Michael Steele and he is a very decent man and frankly ran a pretty positive campaign when he lost the MD governership. Mind you i didnt vote for him but he is a pretty straight guy and my guess is if he said ths it is likely true.

Steele ran a wretched campaign (none / 0)

From race-baiting other Blacks (the alleged "oreo incident"), to trying to convince voters that he was a Democrat (the "Steele Democrat" campaign, complete with signs and misleading fliers identifying him as a Democratic candidate), to busing in homeless people from out of state to work the polls (and then stiffing them), Steele ran on of the most disgusting campaigns in recent memory. The man is a disgrace. The best thing to come of his senate race was that it probably ended any hope he has of ever winning elected office in this state again.
