Primary Day in Scranton

Honking horns and thumbs up are the order of the day.

Primary day is here.  This morning I decided to site see and I headed up into the hills towards where Hillary spent some good old summer time. I drove through Clark's Summit and got myself onto back roads in the general direction of Lake Winola.  I saw beautiful country wherever I looked and tonight I'll post some of the pics I took of Pennsylvania barns and farm country.  Of course, if the party is what I hope I may be too in the bag to write again until tomorrow.

I spent two hours exploring the hills then returned to town for noon time visibility at the corner of Jefferson and Spruce.  There were women from Florida who'd ridden a bus just for today.  There were women from Syracuse who drove down for the day.  People had "Honk 4 Hill" signs and I had a totem pole of 3 signs.  Well the honking was almost nonstop.  Honking and thumbs up.

After an hour or so I moved a block over into the heart of University of Scranton.  Stood by myself on a corner wondering what if anything would happen.  Surprise.  I got the same honking and thumbs up without a honk sign and the few college girls who spoke with me just said good luck and go Hillary.  This is really Hillary Country.

Then in the afternoon I took a canvas packet by myself and went to meet Hillary's Dad.

I didn't know I'd be meeting him until.  Well, I canvased this wonderful street and only one person was home.  Afternoon on a Tuesday who would be home anyway.

I'm walking up the street and a little girl and her grand parents were on the porch of the next house on my list.  I said the usual, I'm a volunteer for Hillary and wanted to be sure you remember to vote today.  The gentleman said, "I will before the end of the day", then he asked where I was from and came down the steps to chat.  In fact the whole family came out to chat.

He was a summer friend of Hillary's at the lake and likes to tell people he dated her.  His lovely wife said it's a good story.

So he gave me directions to the cemetery a few blocks away and I thanked them and drove off to meet Mr. Rodham.  I'm not the type to usually care about this stuff but I figured any effort may work.  I stood at the fence looking at the grave and thanked him for giving us his daughter.

As I drove away that bane of the post 50 man hit so I went back to the house and asked if I might use the boy's room.  Of course.  And I walked in as another Fiona showed me how well she was cleaning the windows of the front door.  Jim was in the kitchen and I went through to the bathroom.  I was offered drinks and all sorts of great Scranton hospitality, chatted some more about my volunteering for Hillary then left with one big spot in my heart for Scranton.

I don't know about the rest of PA but this place is very Hill Country.  That's why I came here.  I didn't want to fight for votes this time around, I just wanted to do a little bit more to help this incredible woman.

It's almost time.  Time to go to a polling spot for the final hours.  In NH I was shocked at how many people make up their mind as they enter the voting booth.  They'll stop and ask supporters "why should I vote for Hillary".  I think they've heard all the ads and seen the debates but one last minute clarification from a real person is what they need to take the final leap of faith.

My goal is to get at least one more to take that leap.

Re: Primary Day in Scranton (2.00 / 13)

thank you for a wonderful diary, and all your hard work. the latest polls say PA could end up like NH - people coming out of nowhere to vote for hillary. if they do, it'll be because of hard work by people like you.

Yep, it's amazing... (2.00 / 9)

Unfortunately, I can't be there in person. But hey, that's not stopping me from working the phone today! I've been getting quite a few positive "Of course, I'm voting for Hillary!" calls... Many more, in fact, than when I was calling here in California on 02/05. Maybe it's just because PA people are more polite and much nicer than we Californicators, but I smell something awesome cooking tonight! ;-)

No way, no how, no McCain! :-)

I still have friends at the U - I sent them all texts today and was surprised that a lot of them already voted for Hilary.

Oh MY (2.00 / 12)

You've got me crying, Hampster.  You're quite a guy.  Hill would be really touched knowing you hiked all the way there to put a sign at her Dad's grave.  I hope she reads this.  Thanks for all you've been doing to bring this great lady to the White House.  Enjoy tonight!

by izarradar on Tue Apr 22, 2008 at 04:08:27 PM EST

I can't take credit for the sign (2.00 / 11)

I think someone put it there to save people asking where the grave is.

We love Hillary in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

2004 swing state margins: PA-2%, OH-2%, IA-1%, WI-0.5%, MI-3%, FL-5%, NM-1%; Alienating 50% of the party is a luxury we can't afford.

We've heard they had a unique relationship, he was always challenging her and believed she could do better, and better.

Man, you are awesome.
Serious.
Awesome.

I feel like I am with you out in PA, campaigning and really being a part of the democratic process.  I forward your diaries to everyone I know.  You are truly an inspiration.

I hope someone will forward your diaries to Hillary Clinton.  You have been a true supporter of Sen. Clinton, the Democratic Party and America

Thank you.

What a great diary NH! (2.00 / 6)

My late father was from Scranton - as was his father and mother, brothers and sisters. My father's family originally emigrated from Ireland to work in the coal mines.
I would really like to make it to Scranton some day - in the meantime thank you New Hampster for a wonderful diary. You're a class act.

Hampster, you have touched my rotten heart (2.00 / 9)

and made me weep today.  And boy did I ever need to.  I have been so very angry at the idea that Hillary HAS to win by "X" amount or it is not a win that I was bitter and furious all day.  But you melted my heart and made me grateful that Hillary is standing up to all of this difficulty and that wonderful people like you are up there working for her and writing lovely diaries so we can be there with you.  Thank you for breaking down my anger with your kind and loving words.

What a great diary!  I think it's very touching that you went to place the sign at her dad's gravesite.

Re: Primary Day in Scranton (2.00 / 8)

Oh, New Hampster, you made me cry with this lovely post.  Thank you.

It sounds to me that Jim and his family is the perfect small town family that is Pennsylvania.

...just like my old neighbors in a town north of Pitt.  I had not seen for decades, but this time on my pass through the old neighborhood, the garage door was open.  I saw a person walk by and called out her name "Is that  ***"?  She asked who I was.  I gave her my maiden name.  "She exclaimed with excitement OMG, come in".  Hair dye on and it didn't matter, she stopped to talk and then we moved upstairs where we talked and talked for hours more.  That's Pennsylvania.

Again, thank you for all you're doing.

Did I tell you that My Father in law (2.00 / 3)

and my mother in law's parents are all buried in that cemetery as well as his uncle Jay, Aunt Rose and lot of other relatives?
West side is so quintessentially Scranton. Or maybe I think so because all of my Scranton relatives (by marriage) are from West Side.
