Randi Rhodes: "Hillary is a [redacted] whore"

Not safe for work or kids

Here's Air America Radio's Randi Rhodes, calling Geraldine Ferarro and Hillary Clinton "[expletive] whore[s]."

Here are two choice excerpts:

"...what a whore Geraldine Ferarro is! She's such a [expletive] whore."

"Hillary is a big [expletive] whore, too. [...] She is a big [expletive] whore, and do you know why she's a big [expletive] whore? Because her deal is always, 'read the fine print, [expletive],'"

This doesn't need much commentary. Randi has become that which she claims to despise. She has set a new low for this campaign cycle, exceeding even the loathsome Chris Mathews.

Simply put, this is unacceptable on the right, the left, or the middle. Randi Rhodes should not have a job anywhere on radio.

And until she's gone, Air America Radio should hear about this in the media and from their advertisers.

Update:

This clip came from "An Evening with Randi Rhodes," in San Francisco, sponsored by Green960 AM.

The contact page is here.

Update 2:

Rhodes takes calls from 3 to 7 ET daily: 1.866.303.2270 . Be polite. To get on the air, use the standard talk radio trick of pretending to the call screener to ask an on-topic question. Again, be polite. Be brief. Be positive. Take the high road, and do not sink to her level.

Here is her contact page

Update 3: Credit for this video clip goes to truthtelling007 who seems to have grabbed a copy of the video from Green 960's website. Yes, it's troubling that a progressive radio station would be proud of this.

Carl - I've gotten a few troll ratings (2.00 / 9)

and shrugged it off.  And I'm a mild commentator. The real people who are poisoning the community are those that post hateful diaries - on either side.

I like Randi but as a woman and a supporter of Hillary, it is offensive.  But look - it's a comedy club - still, the problem is she's not primarily a comedian.  She is a political commentator.  That's problematic.

You are abusing the rating system and you know it. You have done it before and you are doing it now and will continue to do it. There was no reason to troll rate Kathy's comments because it was well in the guidelines. Even if she was not serious, it was not offensive in anyway and did not beak guidelines of this site. KathyM's comments clearly deserve troll ratings. No one should advocate the politics of personal destruction, no matter which candidate they're supporting.

Personally, I find it hard to believe that anyone who calls themselves "progressive" wouldn't know that a well known liberal radio personality like Randi Rhodes was a WOMAN, especially after watching the VIDEO.

I can't even imagine how you think anyone is trying to smear Obama with this.  How could he be responsible for the BS that flows so freely from Randi Rhodes' mouth?

Also, Kathy deserved her troll ratings.  She jumped the tip jar and clearly didn't bother to read the diary and watch the video before she commented on the substance of it.  That deserves a TR - it's damn near the definition of trolling.

You are, of course, right (2.00 / 12)

it would be offensive to hear this from anyone, particularly anyone with a daily audience as large as Randi Rhodes'.

But we have few choices. Randi's certifiable hatred is on liberal radio every day. We cannot associate with that, or with her more colorful version in that auditorium in SF.

We have to have some standards. We cannot let hate stand from Rush Limbaugh, or from Don Imus. We can not let hate stand here simply because it is uncomfortable to address, or because it comes from one of our most important media outlets or personalities. In fact, we have a special responsibility because it does come from our side.

So we are forced to confront this.

Hate is hate. It can not let it stand.

Re: Well.. (2.00 / 13)

This is a touchy subject.

This is not about Obama. But this is about the way the media treats Obama.

The blame here goes purely to Randi Rhodes and, because she is Air America's most well known personality, to the radio network.

Yes, there is a double standard, and yes, this would be all over every media outlet if this were about the other candidate.

But Obama is not to blame for the media's problems, the media is.

The real enemy here is the media, and sadly, even media allegedly allied with the Democratic Party.

We need to remember, the central organizational purpose of new Democratic-supporting institutions like Atrios, MediaWhoresOnline, Media Matters, and the Center for American Progress, was to criticize excesses in the media. After we have a nominee, the media will be back to its old tricks of tearing down Democrats, and our primary purpose, again, will be to fight the real enemy, and not ourselves.

Rhodes' bile is more harmful than is apparent at face value. She discredits all of liberal radio, and sinks far below the mainstream media. She has squandered credibility far beyond her own.

I've called Rhodes "Lady Limbaugh" ever since she invited Nader on her program and then ambushed him back in 2004 by not letting him get in a word between her shouts (He said, " I don't need this," and hung up on her.) "Lady O'Reilly" would probably be more appropriate, but the alliteration isn't as good.

I can't watch the video at work, but the quoted excerpts certainly sound bad.

However, before today I can say that Randi Rhodes has been one of the best and most knowledgeable voices of liberalism on the radio. Yes, her tone is loud and maybe even grating for some. But she knows her stuff.

Condemn her comments if you want, but stop trashing her past record of strong Democratic advocacy. Democrats are barely a blip in the wingnut-driven world of talk radio, and it's sad to see so many people acting like it's BAD that she was an unabashed Democratic partisan. It would be nice if we had MORE "Lady Limbaughs" and "loudmouths" to galvanize our base.

Randi Rhodes has been bashing Hillary on AA for (2.00 / 1)

some time now. She is not impartial and she treats callers who are sane and who disagree with her, even on a small point, with no respect. She is in the bag for Obama. She isn't the only one on AA who is pro-Obama and anti-Clinton.

Now she over played her hand and showed her true colors. She is pond scum and very representative of much of the media's blatent bias.

How can any progressive, moderate or conservative join with someone like Randi Rhodes and support Obama?

Let's clarify something here. People who make a living giving their opinions have NO obligation to be neutral. Randi Rhodes is not a journalist. She does not have to be objective. It's her show, and she can be in the bag for Obama if she wants.

I'm sure there are columnists, pundits or media figures similarly in the bag for Clinton. That's life. I don't get why people are pitching fits every time someone acknowledges they prefer Obama over  Clinton. Sheesh.

Re: Randi Rhodes whore" (2.00 / 13)

You mean Air America finally started getting some sponsors?  I guess maybe after I stopped listening to them months ago.

Disgusting they have become.  This is the perfect example and it's not limited to her apparent [poor]attempts at humor.  When they based their very existence to be the opposite of the Right Wing hate and distorted coverage and they turn around and do the very same thing.  Who knew when she attacked Ann Coulter and the other R W, it was because she wanted to emulate them.  I saw this coming with the changes of the new owners, the Greens.  I never expected them to abuse their listeners trust and our airwaves for their own personal (sick)agenda.

Many weeks back I turned on Randi for the heck of it, to be sickened by her false claims and attacks on Hillary.  There is no repair that can equal what has been coming out of her mouth.  I guess she had to up the anti on Keith Obamamann.  But hasn't she noticed, he's become a laughing stock, is that too what she aspires to?  Ca CHING!  She WINS!

And, by the way, does Randi understand the meaning of whore?....hmmmm.

Is there a double standard here? (2.00 / 1)

When Tina Fey on SNL declared "b** is the new black" and "b**** get stuff done", the Hillosphere erupted in applause, because that was tied to an argument to vote for her.

Now Rhodes is using similar insults against her, and that's completely unspeakable?

Both Fey's and Rhodes' pronouncements are objectionable and degrading, but my guess would be that the people condemning the latter had not a peep to say about the former.

Where I'm coming from, both are unacceptable statements. But one of these two incidents got cheered, the other didn't.

This isn't a discussion, as far as I'm concerned, about the primary. It's one about the usage of language in a gendered political context. I find some expressions completely unacceptable to use for women in the political sphere: b---- is one, w---- another.

Re: That's my point. (2.00 / 2)

B!tch means different things in different contexts. Tina Fey used it to mean 'a woman who steps out of traditional roles to the extent that it offends sexists and therefore they are called b!tch', not 'a woman who is mean/cruel'.

Both of them are perfectly acceptable if used appropriately, actually, as are male equivalents such as jerk.

What is not acceptable is the misuse of the word b!tch to label women who are stepping out of traditional submissive roles as being mean/cruel.

Everything is in the context. It is really very intuitive.

I think you know why... (2.00 / 12)

Sometimes, African-Americans may refer to each other jokingly as the "n" word. But if someone were to ever use the "n" word against anyone, it's disgustingly unacceptable. You have to examine the context.

It's a similar case here. Tina Fey wasn't insulting Hillary by saying "Bitch is the new black". Randi Rhodes, OTOH, WAS insulting Hillary & Geraldine Ferraro by calling them "f***ing whores".

It's not that hard to understand the difference. Look at the context around each statement.

And maybe it's worth pointing out that I find no redeeming value in Rhodes' routine. Tasteless, crass and unacceptable.

But here's the thing: I felt the same way about Fey. But you gave her a pass, probably even applauded her, because her degrading language was used to an end you agree with.

Sure, context matters. But it appears to me that if Rhodes had used her "f------ w----" as part of a pro-Hillary pitch, you wouldn't be all that perturbed. I would be.

Now if you can find a way that RR calling Hillary an EFFing Whore can be construed as taking an insult directed at her and turing it into a positive you might have a point until the you are triangulating and we all no how much you Obama supporters hate that.

your analogy doesn't work right.

But if someone were to ever use the "n" word against anyone, it's disgustingly unacceptable. You have to examine the context.

If it's "woman on woman" misogyny in the present case, then it would have to be a black person calling another black person the n-word. Not that this is by any means a good thing, but I highly doubt there would be the same level of outrage as if a white person said it.

Who's justifying anything? (2.00 / 1)

Or rationalizing or explaining or excusing? I think the whole episode is appalling.

What I'm saying is this: if we condemn Randi Rhodes, and I think we should, then we do so with somewhat less credibility after the Tina Fey episode. Maybe I'm humor-deprived, but I find the b-word and the w-word both degrading. But when Fey came out with her routine, the whoops from pro-Clinton bloggers were deafening.

For further reading, I recommend this Daily Kos diary and the reactions to it, including my own. Exactly the same deal: using sexualized language that's degrading to women in the political sphere. We shouldn't be doing that at all, period, and not carving out selective exceptions for when we like the use to which it's put.

Re: Who's justifying anything? (2.00 / 1)

A whore is NOT the same thing as a bitch and you know that every well, but you are acting as if you did not know the difference to muddy the issue.

A whore carries all negative meanings of a sexually crazed person who sleeps around just to have her fix. A whore has no morals or principles. A whore is the trash of human being. That is the meaning of calling someone a whore and you know that already.

A bitch is a tough woman with a strong character. Every time there is a woman who is tough and demanding we--that is men--call her a bitch. If a man has the same characteristics, we call him tenacious or strong.

My wife who is a high financial manager in a hedge fund could be called a bitch because she a tough woman and i would even go as understanding that. However, I will never accept and/or understand someone calling her a whore.

So, equating Tina Fey  to what Rhodes said is not fair or even a good comparison. Moreover, Tina Fey is a comedian, her work is to make fun of the political elites and she does not have a show on a radio where she analyzes politics every day. Rhodes does have a show on radio where she analyzes the news every day and with that show comes duties and responsibilities to behave in a certain manner in a public forum.

The same thing happened to Don Imus. He was not a comedian, therefore his joke was not accepted or could be explained. If he were a comedian no one would have paid attention to him or to what he said unless he was doing it purposefully to hurt someone like Michael Richards when he went bezerk.

MBNYC, when you try to compare Tina Fey to Rhodes, you are trying to rationalize her conduct and explain her intent and excuse her behavior. So, let me repeat that i already said. No one should try to explain, rationalize, justify or excuse what Rhodes has said on that video. PERIOD.

Stand-up is a different world and RR is, or considers herself, a comedian.

I think we can distinguish between Tina Fey's use of the word "bitch" to praise Hillary (as well as herself and co-anchor Amy Poehler) and Randy Rhodes purported use of the phrase "fucking whore" to slur her.  We can praise one and condemn the other, because unlike television pundits, with their practiced idiocy, we are capable of such subtlety.

Really, I know the difference between sincere praise and a sincere slur, and I think it's entirely acceptable to applaud one and condemn another without being accused of a "double standard" because they contain the same word.

It's tasteless, but... (2.00 / 1)

This is a comedy routine.  She's not saying that Ferraro or Clinton are actually prostitutes. She's saying that their behavior can be compared to prostitutes, and she goes into (stupid) detail on how.

It's basically the same as calling a small dog a "lap slut" or that annoying person at work an "attention whore."

You really have to lay off the outrage, it's not good for you.  The really offensive thing about this is that it's not actually funny, not that she's ripping on Ferraro or Clinton.

Comedians say all sorts of crazy stuff, that's what they're paid to do.  I don't like Rhode's show very much, and this kind of comedy doesn't do anything for me, but let's not get out of hand.  South Park had Satan in a gay relationship with Saddam Hussein.  Chris Rock uses the "N word" constantly.  Stephen Colbert disrespected George W. Bush to his face at the press banquet.  Bill Maher says even worse stuff about our elected officials every friday night on his show.  Rush Limbaugh is even more outragious, and he doesn't even bill himself as a comedian, which is pretty offensive.

Before you get all outraged at a taped comedy show (this wasn't even on the air on Air America), think about every time you've laughed at something inappropriate.  Just because she's picking on someone you respect, doesn't mean that it's any better or worse than comedians saying awful things about people you hate. If you don't like a comedy routine, walk out.  Turn it off.  Don't try to get the comedian fired from an unrelated job.

Mostly agree. Except I don't think she made a serious attempt to explain how their behavior could be compared to that of prostitutes. She just used "whore" in the "woman I don't like" sense. Honestly, I'd bet she wanted to use the word "cunt" but figured it would be too risky.

I've never listened to her show, didn't think that particular stand-up routine was funny (the linejumper bit could've been funny in the hands of a... comedian), but I have a hard time getting worked up about it and don't see how anyone benefits from calling attention to it.

Clinton should be happy Bill Hicks is dead.

Randi won't use "cunt". (none / 0)

Everyone draws the line somewhere, and that's hers.

Says it has something to do with her time in the Air Force, where she has said other times that she was raped and nothing was done to the rapist -- so the two things may be related.

No, but... (none / 0)

If Chris Rock did it, I probably would, though I would still maintain that it was probably in bad taste.

I'm not saying that Randi deserves a pat on the back or anything, but she was playing to an audience as she was obviously paid to do.  I have better things to do than have a fit about a comedy routine.

Comedy is comedy.  The only reasons that Sarah Silverman isn't lynched for all the blasphemy she utters in every routine are A) it's a comedy routine, and everyone realizes that, and B) she's honestly funny and cute.  If you guys had thought it was funny despite your political correctness, you would have given Randi a pass.  You don't think it's funny, however, and you fear that this one routine will somehow negate the monumental gains in feminism made over the last century.  It won't.  You're good.  Women rock.  They rock so much, they're free to talk smack about each other in nightclubs.

I've known plenty of women who have called other women "whores" or "bitches" or even worse.  I'm sure many of you have as well.  I've known men who have used the same and other terms to describe other men.  We understand this.  It's catharsis.  The only egregious thing about what Randi said was that she said it about important political figures to an audience.

I see people thinking that the Democratic party has "abandoned women."  That's silly.  Vote with your dollars and your time if you're offended.  Don't listen to Randi's show and don't buy the products she advertises on it.

Re: Randi Rhodes: (2.00 / 5)

The sad thing is this really isn't that much different then what you read on dkos.  I mean i have seen worse about HRC and Ferraro on dkos and some other web pages.  This type of talk is what you expect when political supporters want to win so badly that come to hate the other person.

The funny thing is i keep hearing about how HRC will do anything to win but this is what we see from BO supporters.  HRC is a racist.  HRC is a lair. HRC will do anything to win. HRC is shrill. HRC is responsible for 4000 us deaths.  HRC is responsible for NAFTA.  BONSIA BONSIA BONSIA. I can go on and on.

I understand that BO supporters have their own issues with HRC and i agree she has run a rough campaign but BO and his supporters have not only run a rough campaign but many of their attacks have been so personal.  And really this is just one example of what we read and hear everyday about HRC.

I wonder what would have happened is some made commentator make a statement about pimping ones daughter directed toward BO instead of HRC.  The noise would be unbearable but not really that much outrage when it is directed a HRC.

RR really hasn't said anything that i don't hear from BO supporters every week right before they lectures us about how if we don't vote for BO we are not real democrats.  Well I have voted democratic since 1978 and I have never seen democrats smear another democrat like I have seen BO supporters smear HRC.

Re: Randi Rhodes: (2.00 / 2)

Find me an Obama supporter who's said what Rhodes said and not been piled on by other Obama supporters. Any of them on the blogs should've been denounced and probably kicked out; even one warning would be rather generous. Maybe if there was a copious apology.

You can find both Obama supporters and Clinton supporters who say vile things about either candidate. On this site we've often been subjected to repeated descriptions of Obama as a "racist" or a "sexist with issues with women" or a "misogynist". While not as offensive as what Rhodes said, it's way, way beyond anything acceptable.

Randi Rhodes is not a part of the Obama campaign; she's not paid by Obama, not in any campaign role, nothing. She's an employee of AA and deserves to be fired by them. She owes Hillary Clinton an apology and so does AA. This is unacceptable language.

Don't try to spin this that this is Obama's fault. It's not. He didn't do it, his campaign didn't do it. If you try that line then we're going to have a long laundry list of apologies on both sides, and we really don't need that.

Re: Randi Rhodes: (none / 0)

Yes, obama has made misogynist comments and his campaign has engaged in racist accusations. That is the truth. Saying that Hillary Clinton and Geraldine Ferraro are fucking whores is not the truth. Whether she is your candidate or not, she is fine progressive who has spent most of her adult life working on behalf of other people. As has Ferraro.

Reducing her foreign policy experience to "tea with ambassadors" is, by definition, a misogynist statement. The "Period" comment is so offensive, I can't believe any Democratic women are still supporting him. Talk about beyond the pale - that's worse than this Rhodes comment.

As for race, as Wilentz pointed out, if the clinton's wanted to run a race baiting campaign, they could have quite effectively released the Wright videos early on. They didn't. So that pretty much demolishes that low life rhetoric coming out of the Obama campaign.

Re: Randi Rhodes is a . . . . (2.00 / 2)

I stopped listening to Randi Rhodes several weeks ago when she began yelling at callers (or maybe she's always done that) but this is downright unhinged.  How is she going to argue on her radio show now that she'll vote for the Democratic nominee, if that nominee is Hillary?  I have never heard such filthy disrespect from any radio show host for fellow members of her own political party. What could possibly be the aim of this?

I'd say I was disappointed in her but that happened a long time ago with this broad..... she needs help. She is doing the Democratic party far more harm than any candidate, including Ralph Nader, is currently doing.  She's just a loser.  I think this video should be posted all over the place to show what kind of mental problems Rhodes apparently operates under.

a [redacted] whore" (2.00 / 4)

she said it because that's how it's been going, worse and worse things are being said about a female candidate for president.  I wrote Howard Dean months ago and said, not another penny until you call out the media for hate speech, for inciting hate. It's probably too late, the haters are having too great a time. Hillary isn't intimidated but it's damn hard to be unafraid in the  midst of such tolerated hate.  It seems that female managers in male dominated industries have to listen to these hate filled jokes about Hillary and pretend to be one of the guys. They're scared, I'm scared, it's gone too far. Obama did not make her say what she said, but he's never spoken out against the hate speech that comes from his self-professed supporters.  The pundits pretend her supporters are also saying the same sorts of things, but that's not factual, it's pretend parity so they don't have to call on Obama for leadership, to rein in his own supporters or at least distance himself and ask them to not vote for him until they rejoin the human race.  Here's a challenge, Obama, say something to your crowds and not with a nod and a wink, really  mean it. You have daughters, speak up for them even if you don't care about women like me?

You'll see it regularly.

As far as high profile people who use the word "nigger" and make fun of black people, Sarah Silverman comes to mind.

There was a Hispanic stand up show on HBO and just about all of the comedians made fun of groups of people they were not part of including black folks.

It's called comedy. It doesn't have to be funny to you though.

Re: Randi Rhodes: (2.00 / 1)

Do I like this language? no

Is this so much worse than American political discourse since 1792? no, not even close

This is a stand up act and although it is certainly not to my taste, it is not straight political commentary.

If your complaint is the bad language, well, that's what exists in comedy clubs; they are not 11:30PM network comedy shows or even cable tv.

If your complaint is the word whore, well, my teenage daughter uses this in many different ways, none of which refer to prostitution.  I don't like the word, but I don't like bitch applied to women either, yet Clinton supporters here seemed to love it when Tina Fey used it and some even talked about the tv shirts they bought that said "bitch is the new black."

If your complaint is that Rhodes is biased, I can't get that. She doesn't portray herself as a reporter who is trying to be objective, nor more than does Pat Buchanan.

But let me be clear - I don't like this myself and it's not good for the Democratic party which will need to be united to defeat McCain.

And of course it would be absurd to somehow blame Obama for this.

There's no substance to respond to. (none / 0)

People who take Randi Rhodes so seriously, who take any radio entertainer so seriously, that they would engage in a petition campaign to get them fired for verbal offenses committed off-air, are pretty much deluded.

Doing so plays into her desire for attention.  It will get her press notice, and it will be counter-productive to the cause you espouse.

Worst case, Mark Green "tut-tuts" her (because the fact is, she is the biggest ratings draw in Air America's stable) and maybe she apologizes, maybe she doesn't.

It's quite possible that such a campaign will push her to be more strident about Hillary on-air, where she has been fairly reserved up to now, encouraging callers and listeners to fall in love now, but to be prepared to fall in line behind whoever ends up with the nomination.

Do you really want that to happen?

Her comments would also be considered indecent by the FCC, especially since they were said during the daytime, when children could be listening.

Re: Randi Rhodes: (2.00 / 3)

I've posted here and there on MyDD lately, almost always snarking away at something that I considered inane or hypocritical said by Hillary supporters.

Now I have to join Pacific John in calling out Randi Rhodes on this one.

I haven't been able to listen to Air America for quite a while now (local station bought out by Christian Radio), but I knew she was a loose cannon about two years ago.

She was refreshing to listen to when there was no other way to hear a progressive take on the news, but sometimes she's... unhelpful (to say the least).

She's not a great comedian (2.00 / 1)

But that's not diary worthy. This is obviously a bad attempt at stand-up. I've seen plenty of bad comics in my life. I'm sure others have, too. You can criticize her talent, but anything else is just wanting of censorship.

by bookish on Wed Apr 02, 2008 at 09:35:50 PM EST

She's NOT a great comedian AT ALL (2.00 / 3)

If Rhodes is a comedian, then so is Ann Coulter.  Not only is Rhodes NOT A COMEDIAN, she doesn't even have a sense of humor.  On her show (and I've heard quite a few), she's either going off on nasty rants or else being shockingly rude to people.  She's a real downer.

She's NOT a comedian AT ALL (none / 0)

I meant my title to say this.

She's NOT a comedian.  She is the flip side of the Rush Limbaugh coin.  That's the best way to describe her and her show.  And she's been that way all along - she's been doing this for many years.

In this particular case, it's quite clear she's attempting stand up. You can argue it's quality, but you cannot argue what it is. Sorry.

Re: She's NOT a comedian AT ALL (none / 0)

In that case, you are calling Ann Coulter a stand-up comedian.  She stands up and talks to audiences with deliberate punch lines, too.  She even makes odd faces on the laugh lines.  And therefore, this excuses her from criticism as well as Rhodes (she was doing comedy, so it's OK if she's over the top, she's "just not funny")?

Re: She's NOT a comedian AT ALL (none / 0)

Turns out she wasn't doing a strictly comedy routine. The video is from "An Evening with Randi Rhodes" hosted by a progressive radio station in San Fran.

http://green960.com/cc-common/mainheadli nes2.html?feed=213008&article=345975 9

She is trying to be funny, and apparently some in the audience found her so. I don't, but that's a matter of taste.

Regardless, she's not a candidate and she's definitely not speaking officially on behalf of a candidate. She's offering her opinion in a manner she hoped would be amusing/cute. I don't like Randi Rhodes style, so I don't listen to her, but I don't think she (or Ann Coulter) should be censored...not even for content I find disagreeable. And I certainly don't agree with the diarist that she should lose her job at AirAmerica for it.

Re: She's NOT a comedian AT ALL (none / 0)

When Air America first came out, I bought a Sirius radio subscription.  When Air America moved to XM, I bought an XM subscription.  I have listened to lots of Randi Rhodes shows over the years.  I know what I'm talking about.

Those of us who know have been trying to tell the people here calling her a "comedian" this all along - she doesn't do stand-up.  This was an Air America event where she was supposed to be gaining new listeners or at least not losing the ones they already have.  She failed miserably.

She should lose her job is she's a losing proposition for the network.  The network is not a charity.  This is not censorship - this is a business decision.  I was a loyal listener until their lineup turned into Limbaugh Left.  I no longer tune in channel 167.  I found other things to listen to.  AA execs will make a BUSINESS DECISION about how many of the people like me (formerly an above and beyond loyal listener) out there they can afford to lose, and decide if it's worth it to put up with Rhodes.

Much less so. (2.00 / 1)

She tends to be bitchy, usually in an entertaining way;   but I often find myself switching to something else when she gets on a repetitive rant.

She programs for people who might hear 15-20 minutes of her show, not for people who turn her on and leave her on.

Now that WWRL has dumped Thom Hartmann for Ed Schultz -- I'm guessing that Jones Network offered them so much money to give Schultz a New York station that they just couldn't refuse it -- I'll probably start listening to Thom Hartmann delayed via podcast instead of Randi.  There's much more food there for the soul and for the mind.

With friends like these... (2.00 / 3)

Wow, that's pretty unbelievable.  In fact, the things happening in this primary are pretty unbelievable.

I'm not a regular listener of Randi because I don't get Air America.  But you can be sure I'll never listen to her now.

This is so over the line.  I can't even believe the vicious attacks on Hillary and the double standards that we witness everyday online, in the media, etc.    This type of treatment would never be allowed toward other candidates.  It's just unbelievable.  You know, I've never even thought of calling Obama or any of our candidates vile names like that.  Several years ago, I didn't even want Hillary to run, partly because the attacks on her in the 90s were so upsetting.  But now that she is running, for whatever reason, I have felt the need to defend her even when she wasn't my first choice in candidates.  The worse these attacks get, the more personal I've been taking it.  I'm not sure why.

If somebody attacked Obama like that, I'd defend him.  Why aren't the leaders in the left blogosphere standing up against this stuff?  I'd never stand for anybody talking like that about any of our own.

Why is it that this is tolerated against Hillary?  I really don't understand it and I'm having a really hard time with it.  I'm worried.  I'm more than worried.  What has happened to this party?  What happened to the netroots, the place that gave me such a sense of relief, empowerment and hope these last few years?

by joanneleon on Thu Apr 03, 2008 at 12:11:42 AM EST

Rhandi went ballistic after the Mar. 5th primaries (2.00 / 3)

I posted this same comment on the other diary regarding Ms. Rhodes.

I have listened to Rhandi for years, and I was impressed with how she helped Cindy Shehan with her protests in Crawford, Texas.  Rhandi helped make this protest national news on her AAR program, and Cindy has always been thankful to Rhandi for it.  I will always be grateful to her for that era also.

However, I am just like the rest of you regarding her recent turn for the worse on the radio.  I cannot listen to her radio show any longer without subjecting myself to a stroke or worse! Although I had listened to her enough to know that she supported Obama, she tried to be fair it seemed until March 5th when Hillary won Ohio, Texas and Rhode Island.  I listened to her the next day, and she went bonkers for Obama.  That primary was the camel that broke her back IMO.  She has no reasoning with anyone who calls her show anymore.

The thing that makes this ordeal so sad is that Rhandi absolutely seemed to love President Bill Clinton and always said great things about him over the years.  She even met him in NYC at a party earlier this year and had her photo taken with him; bragging about it on her show.  He must be so dissapointed like the rest of us on how bad she has turned on the Clintons.

Rhandi, shame on you!  How could you do this to your former fans and supporters.  You always have stated that you are a Democrat to the heart.  How could you turn so badly on any one in your party so quickly and ruthlessly!

by mcctx on Thu Apr 03, 2008 at 12:31:13 AM EST

Dammit! (2.00 / 3)

Randi's off her meds again! Of course, they were never particularly effective, anyway. Someone needs to forcibly sedate her.

By the way, is it just me, or does anyone else think it's offensive when people (like Randi) refer to something they dislike as "gay"? Why is that sort of bigotry allowed? We should be on her ass for that, as well.

by sricki on Thu Apr 03, 2008 at 12:32:26 AM EST

Re: Randi Rhodes (2.00 / 1)

Her voting record of most "corporate issues" is pretty awesomely progressive. You should take a look at the assessment over at www.progressivepunch.org They assemble a huge database of votes on dozens of issues. Then they focus on issues where the split is party line. Then they take the six most progressive members of the senate and compare the Democrat's votes to that group so that you can see how often each votes in alliance with the most progressive senators.

I'm not saying you need to switch allegiance, but if you have concerns, you'll likely feel a lot better. I haven't had a single person I've sent to that site not tell me that her voting record  was helluva lot different than they thought it was.

I'm not surprised. Randi Rhodes has been a hack for years. I used to sometimes listen to her on Air America 3 or 4 years ago and didn't much care for her then even when I agreed with her basic positions.

Not much has changed, really. I'm an Obama supporter. Evidently she is too. Evidently she is still a hack. I am so tired of this ugly infighting. This isn't the first time that Rhodes has been an embarrassment to the side she supports. I'll be glad when this primary is over.

White Male Here & A Big Fan Of Randi (2.00 / 1)

I'm not going to object to Randi using that term the same way I wouldn't object to African-American comedians using the n word. When it comes to women I avoid using the b word, the w word (two syllable pronounciation BTW) or the big motherfucker, the c word. Women can use it all they want though. I do love motherfucker though. That is my favorite and I'm not giving up that motherfucker for any motherfucking b w c.

I'm a fan of political punditry and a fan of comedy. When I listen to Randi fill air time there is a stand up element to what she does. Thanks for the clip. If she ever comes to Los Angeles I'll wait in line for tickets. I think it is kind of funny when the free speech standards of comedy overlap with the tight ass world of political punditry. Probably one of the reasons I can listen to Rev. Wright and not have to utter the obligatory "I found what he said outrageous". I read what he wrote about Italians killing Jesus and found it hysterical and I'm half Italian. It also gave me a bond with my Jewish brothers.

"Gay" is not the same kind of word as the n-word.

Randi is not just a gay rights supporter, she's an active, vocal  ally. She's close friends with Melissa Etheridge and promotes her outlook and music on the show, she raised her lesbian sister's daughter after she died, etc. "Gay" is in her family, and her ally status is very personal.

Her "how gay is that" stuff is tongue in cheek, and is usually poking fun at homophobic people on the right.

Yeah.. about Randi (2.00 / 2)

I'm not writing this to excuse Randi, just to explain her a little. I've listened to her for years, interspersed with dozens of "that's it, she's jumped the couch, I won't tune in again" moments. I've had very ambivalent feelings about her.

1) She's a hell of a researcher, and a great journalist, apart from the rants and bouts of rudeness to callers. I get information from Randi I don't get anywhere else. She also has amazing interviews with prosecutors, Senators, etc.

2) When she gets on a rant, she can go WAY over the top. As I said, I can't count the number of times I've been horrified and written her off, only to go back for the journalism, having to say "That's just Randi."

"Whore" is common Randi parlance when Randi's speaking of someone she believes has "sold out" or gotten into bed with evil (like Rupert Murdoch, Monsanto, Scaife, etc), she uses it pretty often to refer to men too.

3) Randi stuck up for Hillary for the LONGEST time under torrents of abuse from the right. She feels betrayed by what she perceives as Hillary's ethical compromises. Randi's anger at Hillary is the powerful kind of "jilted" rage that someone feels when they believe in someone who then they feel profoundly let-down by. She reacted the same way after having defended Bill in the face of his "trouser lie." She really loses it when she feels lied to.

4) Randi is very principled, in her harsh, gauche, foul-mouthed way. In this way she is nothing like Coulter. She is a passionate lover of truth and justice and just flips out when she feels like people are being dishonest or machiavellian. (I'm not arguing anything about Hillary, I'm just saying these are Randi's perceptions, which she is reacting to.)

5) Listeners' rage at Randi's language choices I think is well-grounded.. I understand the argument that people--especially women, should not call other women names that have sexually degrading connotations. It feeds into a greater cultural dysfunction, to say the least.

Re: this video (none / 0)

I finally got the video to work. She never said this on the radio. This is typical trash-mouth stand-up to a stand-up audience, not anything she said on the air. I'm sorry, I can't get excited about this.

Lighten up, people.

This has now be picked up on the front page (none / 0)

Nice going, Randi.  You are now busted but good!  And thanks to Pacific John for spreading the word.

Re: Randi Rhodes: "Hillary is a [redacted] (none / 0)

I don't get AA, & I've never hear Rhodes' show; but I can't imagine a context in which that would be acceptable language on a news-oriented broadcast.  Doesn't sound good to me.

Of course, if the redacted word were "media", there might be a case; but assuming it was mere profanity, I have to object.

Now, Kathy Griffin could pull that off & make it funny; but a news commentator?  No; not even as opinion.

Disgusting quote (and I support Obama)

Re: Randi Rhodes (2.00 / 1)

Wow.  That is so far beyond unacceptable I don't even know where to start.  I just read on HuffPo that she's been suspended, and I couldn't agree more with Air America's decision.  Every woman in the universe should be offended by her comments.

For the record, I'm an Obama supporter.
