1,000 Sally Kern supporters in OK

Below is an excerpt from and article on towleroad.com.  You know there is a reason that hate spitting folks such as Kern, McClurkin, Meeks, Dobson, Perkins, etc., have the prominent positions they do.  People, lots of people, agree with their every word and support their evil wholeheartedly.

"Early reports are beginning to come in on the "Rally for Sally" sponsored by the Concerned Women for America and the American Family Association which is reportedly being supported by over 50 pastors. Via AP:

"More than 1,000 people streamed into the Oklahoma Capitol Wednesday for a rally in support of state Rep. Sally Kern, the Republican lawmaker who drew national condemnation for anti-gay remarks caught in a YouTube audio clip. A 'We Stand With Sally Kern,' sign was posted in the Capitol's first-floor rotunda, where the rally was being held. Kern drew widespread criticism for her comments, including a remark that homosexuals are a greater threat than terrorists. Kern has rejected demands by gay and lesbian groups that she apologize for her remarks."

The Oklahoman newspaper today published an editorial calling Kern a "one-trick pony" who should "work to do something constructive" with her time.

The Oklahoman wrote in an editorial: "Last week Kern met with one of the groups (PFLAG), based in Oklahoma City, and afterward its president called it 'a very productive conversation' and backed off the call for Kern to step down. But the next day, Kern said the group had taken her remarks from the meeting 'and spun them to make it appear that I am backing off my comments that homosexuality is a sin ... and that I am in favor of sexual orientation laws.' She said neither could be further from the truth, and that the group had shown a 'lack of integrity' by twisting her words to fit its purposes. Oh, and she won't meet again with members. That's disappointing, but hardly surprising. Kern's main focus in the Legislature has been on anti-gay initiatives, such as trying to determine where libraries should place books with homosexual themes. 'God's Word does not change. ... Therefore, my opinion also will not change,' she said last week. Kern will be shown a little love today when the American Family Association holds a rally in her support at the Capitol. Perhaps constituents ought to hold a rally of their own, urging this one-trick pony to put her tiresome personal agenda aside and work to do something constructive."

I tend to forget sometimes since I've left the South how little we have accomplished towards true equality in this country.  It makes me want to give up.  East Coast and California liberals are surrounded with like-minded tolerance, and so think things are truly better everywhere.

They're not.

Time is on our side. These people will be in the vast minority soon enough.

How many people showed for anti-Iraq War demonstrations?

How did it affect policy? Media coverage?

Re: 1,000 Sally Kern supporters in OK (2.00 / 1)

Yes, there are many parts of this country that are profoundly bigoted toward LGBT people. I moved to NYC when I was 19 and haven't strayed away since then, it is just too good having a community around to lean on. It would be far too painful for me to try to live outside this enclave. It is incredible how much work still needs to be done with the Sally Kerns of the world, and their supporters.

It is still fine to demean LGBT people in much of the country.

Vote Hillary!

Re: 1,000 Sally Kern supporters in OK (2.00 / 0)

I had fully expected when I moved out here to the Mountain West to be subjected to biblical epic levels of discrimination like back in Texas, but these folks mean it when they say "government, leave me alone."  Live and let live, I don't care what you do, everyone has the right to do as they damn well please, just stay off my property and let me have all the guns I can amass.  If you are a person that has experienced mistreatment at the hands of government, there are some things to be said for Libertarianism, just not enough things to make me join the party (it is too infested with Aryan Nation types for me).  I have experienced no problems so far, except that I am an outsider.  Good thing my partner is a local boy...

I'd like to agree, but the movement to the left is due to Bush's incompetence more than anything else - here's hoping that effective, competent Democratic government will improve people's opinions of the party!  These fine folks don't really trust anyone in Washington, New York or California, or actually, anyone living in an incorporated town.  My home (Great Falls, MT, pop. 50,000) is considered a large city.

I am heartened by the level of tolerance for me and my partner.  I think actually that this is what the social policy of the Republican party (I have no right to interfere with your private life), sans biblical bigotry, would like in a perfect world.

The move left, I hope will continue after the Dems take the White House. I don't want to imagine a world in 20 years where the GLBT cause hasn't made significant progress.

I live in Oklahoma City. A person did announce that he'll run against Kern in 2008. I forgot his name though.

That's tremendous courage.  Is this person openly gay?  You live there.  What do you think his chances are?
