Live From Barack Obama Rally in Philadelphia

Update [2008-4-18 21:23:1 by Todd Beeton]:OK, the speech is over. It started really late and was super short -- ran just under a half hour, usually he does about 40-45 minutes. I'm actually a little puzzled by how short his speech was. Usually he goes further in depth on issues than he did tonight. The structure was essentially 1. McCain 2. Hillary 3. issues. The central theme of the speech was "declaring independence from politics of division." Expect to hear that formulation as he treks through Pennsylvania this weekend. It was a really good, tight speech and typically chill-inducing. I do wonder if people might feel a bit short-changed, as it were, considering some of them have been here for hours. But man it was a beautiful night so there are worse places to be stuck for a few hours.

Beginning of the speech is below the fold. Oh and by the way, props to Philly -- the wireless I signed into was, while not free, public wifi. Hopefully the future is free wireless everywhere but this is a start.

------------------------------

Update [2008-4-18 21:4:49 by Todd Beeton]:"Senator Clinton is a tenacious opponent. She is also a committed public servant." Boos. "Listen up, guys. But her message really comes down to this...'we can't really change the same old special interest culture in Washington so you might as well pick the candidate who knows how to play the game. You might as well elect me because we can't expect real change in Washington.' She's accepted more lobbyist money than anyone in this election, even John McCain, because she believes lobbyists represent real people."

"She has come at me with what she called the kitchen sink and her argument is that she's better at playing that game so you should vote for her. Well, I'm not running to play the same old Washington games...We need to declare our independence from the same old Washington politics." The crowd loved that.

Politics that exploits our differences...that feds on fake controversies and distractions where you keep track of how many points you score on your opponent but not how many problems of the American people you solve."

Update [2008-4-18 21:14:28 by Todd Beeton]:The upside of "bitter-gate" and last night's debate: Obama's central message of getting beyond the politics as usual has far more potency. They are essentially proving his point, providing evidence for the entire rationale for his candidacy.

"In four days time you get the chance to bring about the change you deserve. We can declare our independence from the politics that has shut us out...We need to declare our independence from the cynicism and the doubt that tells us real change can't happen."

I just got here to Independence National Historical Park in Philadelphia with several thousand of my closest friends for a Barack Obama rally. It's a perfect spring night, it has the feel of a summer rock festival or something. As we arrived Ed Kowalcyk of Live took the stage. He sang Lightning Crashes and segued into a nice version of Imagine and then was joined on stage by Will.i.am.

I haven't seen Barack in a while so I look forward to seeing how his stump speech has changed. Tonight's rally looks to be the kick-off of his "On Track For Change" whistlestop tour through Pennsylvania, which will take him northwestward through the state through the weekend.

One of the more amusing sights here is a small inflated blimp embalzoned with "Boilermakers For Barack", (you can see a picture HERE),a reference, of course, to the drink that Hillary downed last week.

The sun has now set and we're being serenaded by Stevie Wonder's Higher Ground over the loudspeakers. The festivities should be getting under way any time now...

Update [2008-4-18 21:4:49 by Todd Beeton]:Barack took to the stage to Springsteen's "The Rising." This crowd is one of the most enthusiastic I've ever seen. Many "I love you Barack!"s.

He just thanked "two of his earliest supporters", Congressman Chaka Fattah and Congressman and war hero Patrick Murphy."

"We don't believe anyone in Washington is looking out for us or fighting for us. So this is our chance to declare our independence...Independence from a politics that's about tearing each other down instead of lifting the country up."

"Now, no matter who you're supporting in the primary campaign." The crowd was like "We're supporting you! Obama! Obama!" Obama: "Now now, I hope there are some Hillary supporters here, I want to change their mind." There was some booing, but Barack is like "now, let me finish" and he's talking about McCain. "John McCain offers more of the same, four more years of Bush policies." Bigger boo from the crowd.

"We can't afford another four years of Bush McCain policies without any economic progress, it's time to turn the page and write a new chapter of American history."

It actually appears to be related to the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers, an large but not huge AFL-CIO union that has endorsed Obama.

Boilermakers for Barack is really funny. Edgy and wry people. You have several thousand close friends? So do I! Were any of my friends there? My friend Toni from DC is in Philly doing the Obama circuit. She'd vote for Clinton without hesitation, but she loves Barack. I'm sure she was there.

Re: Live From Barack Obama Rally in Philadelphia (2.00 / 1)

I actually headed home from the rally early.

I was getting dehydrated and decided it wasn't worth it.  Now that I'm home and rehydrated I regret leaving.

Huge crowd.  I'm horrible at estimates, but there were definitely more there than they were expecting, which I heard was 20,000 or so (I heard this third hand, so it may not be accurate).

The setup is a little weird, though, and I don't think most of the participants are going to be able to see Obama.  They're actually across the street.

Re: Live From Barack Obama Rally in Philadelphia (none / 0)

I'm sorry you had to leave early.  You gotta remember to BRING WATER!  It's getting warmer and all those people around, generating heat, will wear you out.

And Obama like to make those rock star entrances, 1/2 hour late.  There were about 35,000 so you would have passed out.  I'm surprised no one was selling bottled water, they would have made a fortune.

Re: Live From Barack Obama Rally in Philadelphia (1.33 / 6)

Is he bragging about how he bagged the endorsement of the odious Sam Nunn?  go over and read the comment thread at the NY Times.  Obama supporters so excited about the Nunn endorsement and even proposing, get this, an Obama-Nunn ticket.  Does this not absolutely prove the moral and intellectual bankruptcy of Obama world?  Nunn was the Lieberman/Zell Miller of the early nineties.  He colluded with Repukes (and Colin Powell who was practically insubordinate) to keep President Clinton from allowing gay people to serve openly in the military.  He was the very worst kind of Reagan Democrat, not just culturally conservative but a war monger who supported the Reagan policies in Central America.  No suprise he'd jump on the BO bandwagon seeing how BO never had any problem throwing gay people under the bus.  The problem with Obama supporters is they were pickled in the toxic 90s media and don't understand that everything they believe about Hillary is a lie.  She is the more progressive candidate.  She would certainly be a more progressive president.  Obama-Nunn, good luck with that.

by joker on Fri Apr 18, 2008 at 08:46:05 PM EST

Re: Live From Barack Obama Rally in Philadelphia (2.00 / 5)

OK.  This one pisses me off. Neither candidate is perfect on gay issues.  That's all right: I understand that they have an election to win and the last thing they need is to push too far during a campaign.  Still, BOTH are on our (meaning us gays) side, and I don't doubt that by the end of either presidency, gay rights will much much further along than either feels they can talk about now.

Both fall short.  There was the homophobic speaker  at an Obama rally in SC, but I'm willing to allow that he wants to bring all types of people together, and I appreciate that Obama brings up gay issues to hostile audiences when he doesn't have to.

The Clinton Administration was more actions than words; Don't Ask Don't Tell was bad compromise, and Bill Clinton's promotion of the Defense of Marriage Act was loathsome.  Still, I allow that that was her husband's administration, not hers, and understand that she's pretty good on gay rights, too.

So... with both being about the same on the issue, I'd thank you kindly to find some other bludgeon to go after with Obama with.  This homo supports Obama and doesn't appreciate your ill-informed statement about "BO throwing gays under the bus."  Thanks.

Plain and simple, a very immature response.

Re: Live From Barack Obama Rally in Philadelphia (none / 0)

Immature in what way? He was explaining the circumstances for which he was tested.  I think Biden's point was that a person with multiple partners should be tested.  Obama was clarifying that he was tested for a different reason along with his spouse in preparation for a trip to Africa, so as not to leave the question in people's minds about why he was tested.  Is your point that he should not have clarified that?  Should monogomous people, heterosexual or homosexual, be tested routinely, even if they have no reason to believe they are at risk?

Re: Live From Barack Obama Rally in Philadelphia (2.00 / 1)

"Does this not absolutely prove the moral and intellectual bankruptcy of Obama world? "

No it does not prove anything but that some people are not fully aware of Sam Nunn's domestic policy...and they like what ever new name crops up... this is not true of all or even most Obam supporters.  Obama would not likely put him on the ticket.

The fact that this endorsement was a "get" was not because of domestic policy though, but his foreign policy chops...  And Clinton would have accepted it in a heartbeat.

Beyond that, your post was borderline toxic in and of itself... but I will not read into it any assessment of the moral and intellectual bankruptcy of the Clinton world...

If you find yourself "in love" with a Presidential candidate, and feel the need to express it like that, you have a serious need of a life and a grip.

Re: Live From Barack Obama Rally in Philadelphia (2.00 / 1)

Haha, because every time someone says they "love" something, it really means they have a romantic connection.  It's called hyperbole.

So by your definition, every time you've said you loved something, you wanted to live with it for the rest of your life?  So do you love your parents?  How about pizza?  How about Friday nights?  Hmm...you must be quite the literal person if not.

I'm sorry are you saying that just randomly 40,000 people gathered around Independce Mall at the same time Barack Obama was speaking.  Common sense tells us that that just does not happen.

Why do you feel such a need to deny a phenomenon?  Is it b/c to acknowledge Obama's political influence and power is to acknowledge that he is the better candidate?

Re: Live From Barack Obama Rally in Philadelphia (none / 0)

Astounding that while Obama is pulling in 40,000 people, some still cling for any talking points they think will pass the smell test.

"Where's the issues? He's not convincing meeeeeeee to vote for him." Um, he's got 40,000 people that decided 21 debates, dozens of televised town halls across the country, and a full policy detail paper that's an address and a click away from this site are enough. The world does spin on, and in this case its spinning on without you.

Clinton could have had huge rallies too, if she wanted to work for them. After seeing this tonight, its too bad for her supporters that she didn't. No one owes a candidate support - it has to be earned. And the attitude some have about support being deserved, especially for a laundry list of ego slights while slinging mud as fast as possible - well, is it any wonder 40,000 people don't want to come spend a night in the park with you?
