Serious Question : Does Obama suffer from Speech Impediment

Why does he "Uhmm", "aah" through all his answers? It is really off-putting. I got so distracted by this and had a tough time paying attention to what he was saying.

At some level, isn't this un-presidential? I would think coherence in extemporaneous settings would be a requirement of a future president (BTW, lets not cite the current doofus in WH as a counter example).

Have you seen the skit on the Late Show? (2.00 / 1)

David does the "Barack Obama "UH" count" where they count the number of times he "uhs" when he's speaking. It is very distracting when he's talking and thinking on his feet and not reciting a monologue.

The YouTube clip on in that blog entry.

Re: Have you seen the skit on the Late Show? (2.00 / 1)

OMG, I thought I was the only one to notice this. Did not know even Letterman noticed this.

I dont know about you all, but I think someone with so many uhms, ahs will not be taken to a sales presentation by his bosses in most American corporations. He will turn off/distract the buyer/decision maker.

Well, uh, if it was (2.00 / 1)

anyone,uh, else he would have been roundly criticized for it by the likes of Jon Stewart and Colbert but since it is Barack,uh, he gets a pass.

I, uh, noticed this, uh, in his bittergate response.  He, uh, said it, uh, some 35 times in a, uh, three minute response.

Re: Serious Question : Does Obama suffer from (none / 0)

Actually, I think that was a pretty dumb question. Pretty condescending and insulting. There's a reason people use "uhm" and "ahh", and if you took a look at how much Senator Clinton did similar things, I think you'd find they were awfully similar.

Hooray for John McCain!

Hahahahaha (2.00 / 1)

Look at you get all defensive after all the "jokes" you make in diaries and comments of pro-Clinton diaries here.

Excuse me while I laugh in your face.

Re: Serious Question : Does Obama suffer from Spee (none / 0)

The amount of times someone says "um" is probably the last reason they should be considered unPresidential. Seriously, its like asking if Clinton would be unPresidential because of her laugh.

Re: Serious Question : Does Obama suffer from Spee (2.00 / 1)

Of course.. I think it is OK if you do Uhm, aah once in a while.. but >50% of your sentence is uhms, aahs.. it can get pretty distracting.

Obviously, the title question is provocative...but I seriously think this is an issue when it comes to communicating his thoughts - he will not always have the teleprompter, you know.

IMO, excessive Uhm, aah gives the perception that "you dont know the issue and you are making up an answer - uncomfortably - as you go".

Re: Serious Question : Does Obama suffer from Spee (2.00 / 1)

I'll take a President that can actually think this time around. Either Democrat fits the bill.

I hate to say it but when you write a four line diary asking that kind of "provocative" question it sounds very much like the snotty girls in junior high.

Re: Serious Question : Does Obama suffer from Spee (none / 0)

I think it's an indication that he's (y'ow) actually processing his answers in real time, as opposed to (ahh) spitting out a canned sound-bite on every (y'ow) "issue".

If you don't like that answer, relish the rich potential for entertaining spoofs when he becomes President!

Do people that create a four-line diary to ask a stupid question have a thinking impediment?

Re: Serious Question : Does Obama suffer from Spee (2.00 / 1)

I don't know that a crutch like "Umm" counts as a speech impediment.

Hillary does it too, by the way.  She puts a lot of "like" and "you know" in her answers.

McCain has two crutches.  They're called Joe Lieberman and Lindsay Graham.

No way. No how. No McCain.

Well... (2.00 / 3)

The allure of Barack Obama is premised on the following recipe:

Speechwriter + Teleprompter = Eloquence

When you take away either, we see the wizard behind the curtain, as anyone watching the debate saw clearly tonight.

2004 swing state margins: PA-2%, OH-2%, IA-1%, WI-0.5%, MI-3%, FL-5%, NM-1%; Alienating 50% of the party is a luxury we can't afford.

Does Obama suffer from Speech Impediment (none / 0)

Obama is not a very good speaker unless he is doing a stump speech or a prepared talk.  He tends to pause way too long, as though he cannot think of what to say and utters many "ahhhs" and "uhhhs" in between.  I've wondered for a long time why everyone thinks he's such a good speaker.

Clinton is nothing special in this regard, but she's slightly above average for a pol.

I thought Edwards was the best spoken of the major three.

Re: Serious Question : Does Obama suffer from Spee (none / 0)

A year ago I thought this would be a more frequently addressed topic. The number of "uhhhs" was startling and I mentioned it on a few sites.

A few months ago it was less noticeable and I thought Obama had been prepped to avoid them. But tonight I decided it was much more basic: When under pressure the most ingrained flaws tend to resurface. Not much different than the Greg Norman push to the right, when he was gagging late in a major event.

The relative lack of "uhhhs" from Obama until tonight only serves to hint at how much he has gotten away with, the media obsession with attacking Hillary and keeping her on the defensive.

Re: Serious Question : (2.00 / 1)

Hillary says "you know" more than your average  athlete. Same principal, she is trying to collect her thoughts and uses "you know" to pause and think.

It's called thinking, and I understand why (none / 0)

you're not familiar with it. We see so little of it.

The idea of actually thinking about answers to questions as opposed to spitting out canned answers which may or may not relate to the question asked is a rarity in politics and since the opposing candidate in this case is an old school politician the contrast is more stark.

Re: Serious Question (none / 0)

I have no link, but I have heard that he had a stutter when he was a child.  The uh's and umms could be how he's learned to work through his stuttering.  Again, I've been told that, but I don't have any hard proof.  Maybe someone can confirm or positively deny that.
