It's Time For Condi To Go

I'm off to see what sort of post-debate fun can be had. I'm going to bump this up since it got buried earlier - Todd

Last week, ABC News reported what should be a bombshell: that "Top Bush Advisors Approved 'Enhanced Interrogation'."

In dozens of top-secret talks and meetings in the White House, the most senior Bush administration officials discussed and approved specific details of how high-value al Qaeda suspects would be interrogated by the Central Intelligence Agency, sources tell ABC News.

The so-called Principals who participated in the meetings also approved the use of "combined" interrogation techniques -- using different techniques during interrogations, instead of using one method at a time -- on terrorist suspects who proved difficult to break, sources said. [...]

As the national security adviser, Rice chaired the meetings, which took place in the White House Situation Room and were typically attended by most of the principals or their deputies.

Unfortunately, there is a noticeable lack of outrage in the media about the story. Digby calls them out:

Since the national news is obsessed with the Pope's visit, "bitterness", "duck blinds" and how and what Democrats drink in diners and bars, they are not inclined to pursue this. Or maybe they just think the top echelon of the Bush administration personally approving specific torture techniques is business as usual by now. It isn't.

There was a time when many members of the press and many citizens of this country would rend their garments about what they would "tell the children" about sex in the White House. Oddly, they seem to be unconcerned about what to tell the children about torture being devised and approved in the same place. That tells you something about the provincial Village that runs our politics.

In the wake of this revelation and the crickets chirping in the media, Brave New Films, True Majority and DFA have launched www.CondiMustGo.com, which features an online petition to the presidential candidates urging them to call for the resignation of Condoleezza Rice and an ad that will air in the Philadelphia market after tonight's debate.

Watch it below:

I confess to not having covered it myself so I'm glad to get this issue some eyeballs tonight. Please sign the petition and watch the full length video at www.CondiMustGo.com. And use FireDogLake's letter to the editor tool to tell your local papers to cover this story.

Why Condi? I understand she lied but I am tired of everyone but Bush taking the hit. He's the President and I can easily find 10 YouTube videos with Bush saying that we don't torture.

It's time we take this country back!

Another site just divides everyone. At least sign up for both but call Pelosi and Conyers as well.

The Cossacks work for the Tsar (none / 0)

I agree - taking Condi down is silly, when we know Cheney was directly involved, and Bush knew and approved.

Simulpeachment is what's called for, but unfortunately our Congress doesn't have the guts.

Re: The Cossacks work for the Tsar (none / 0)

I don't think taking Condoleeza Rice down , is silly - nor do I happen to think its the right thing to do.

Sure, she was involved in a corrupt administration by and large - that fabricated rationale for needless war. This type of treason visited upon the people by a president will be best reflected, however, in historical interpretations.

She is at the end of the tenure of a lame duck president who had his wings clipped because of repeated abuse.  She has zero percent change of remaining in power in the next administration.

My view is that she's already received her punishment - to have beeen associated so closely
with the bush republicans.

That aside, heck. She actually does a decent job.
At least from an administrative standpoint.

The removal of Condi from office at this late juncture represents a symbolic act,at best, the appointment that would take place to replace her would be too little too late.

Good lord, less than a half a year or so and we have a new president taking office.

So guys. Give her a break. We have other battles to fight. She's not so bad anyway. She's just been directed to lie by Karl Rove and kin.

Re: The Cossacks work for the Tsar (none / 0)

Where in the hell have you gotten the idea that Condi Rice "isn't so bad??"  And it's ok because she was just following orders?  Holy shit.  She is as complicit as anyone else in the administration.

Read this article for information on how she has helped make an unholy mess out of the P/I situation:

Re: The Cossacks work for the Tsar (none / 0)

You people disgust me.

I really think there alot of members here who voted for Bush in 2004 and you two are them.

God I get sick to my stomach, this woman has committed WAR crimes, she has endangered our soldiers for generations.

I know why you dont want to prosecute her and it's sad.

It only takes a little looking on this site to see what issues people here care about.

Flag Pins, Reverend Wright........ (none / 0)

We'll probably never get to the issue of torture, and it sure doesn't seem to be on Hillary's radar screen.

Re: Flag Pins, Reverend Wright........ (none / 0)

Nor her fervent supporters.

My take is they don't want these kind of actions because they do not help hillary at all.

I posted up news on AMERICAN women getting raped in Iraq and then railroaded by the justice and state departments.

What kind of response did I get here,

zilch........

Todd, I enjoy your commentary on the front page here at this site.  Most of the diaries here don't appeal to me, but I always find your commentary refreshingly objective and insightful.  You're the only reason I come by, actually.

Unfortunately, there is a noticeable lack of outrage in the media about the story.

Fortune has nothing to do with it. The WH Torture Conspiracy isn't being covered by design.

Have you seen the documentary "Taxi to the Dark Side?" It is a must-see for anyone wanting to really educate themselves on US torture policy. I don't think Condi is the one to go. Impeach Cheney instead.

Re: It's Time For Condi To Go (none / 0)

So I can see where the Clintonistas stand on torture.

If we don't stand up to these transgressions than the blood on Condi's hands drips onto ours.

Of all the front page stories this got the least hits.

This is sad, so very very sad.

Again, I signed the petition, anyone else?
