Cure For The Common McCain Defector

I just ordered my copy of Cliff Schecter's The Real McCain: Why Conservatives Don't Trust Him and Why Independents Shouldn't. This is a must-read for all of us in the blogosphere but not just a must-read, it's a must-buy. It's important to support our fellow progressives and to be honest, the more this book sells, the more likely it will be that Cliff will be booked on TV. Is it me or are there fewer progressive voices on TV lately than there used to be? We know why news outlets aren't exactly clamoring to book Cliff. His book features anecdotes about the media's favorite maverick like this:

Three reporters from Arizona, on the condition of anonymity, also let me in on another incident involving McCain's intemperateness. In his 1992 Senate bid, McCain was joined on the campaign trail by his wife, Cindy, as well as campaign aide Doug Cole and consultant Wes Gullett. At one point, Cindy playfully twirled McCain's hair and said, "You're getting a little thin up there." McCain's face reddened, and he responded, "At least I don't plaster on the makeup like a trollop, you cunt." McCain's excuse was that it had been a long day. If elected president of the United States, McCain would have many long days.

And this one, as related by Cliff to Crooks & Liars:

McCain made a big speech when Republicans were voting for Bush's bill to get rid of the Estate Tax. He called those who supported it "whiners" while those fighting were "sacrificing for their country" and that it should not be "eliminated during a time of war." He has now flip-flopped and wants to make it permanent (and even took the lead in May of `06 to do it!). There has been more out there on his flip-flop on Bush's taxes overall, but not much if anything on this specific statement and position. And it is important, as the Estate Tax is specifically for the rich. Voting for that bill back then, however, was "a far cry from sacrifice."

It's also incumbent on all of us to be armed with the facts about McCain so we can talk down our errant friends and family who think it's even an option to vote for this guy. We've seen all the polling that shows a good chunk of Democrats (in the 20% range!) say they will vote for McCain if their preferred candidate loses the primary. This is unacceptable. Buy The Real McCain and read up on just what a disaster this guy would be as president. And support a good progressive in the process.

You should point out that it's only $10. I assumed it would be more, I bought 2.

Re: Cure For The Common McCain Defector (2.00 / 1)

I bought the book.

I read the book.

It IS terrific.

But please, don't stop with buying and reading the book -- disseminate the information -- not just here with the other progressives -- but to the people in your neighborhoods and offices and what not who actually support McCain -- they're the ones that really need to hear it.

For some reason, McShame is teflon to the pundits -- maybe if enough truth about John's lies, back-tracks, hypocrisy and tune-changing gets around, they'll actually report it.

that you won't be part of the Democratic primary in Denver?  Am I a mindreader?

Re: Cure For The Common McCain Defector (2.00 / 1)

It's up to us to get this information out there.

The press sure isn't going to do it, because they're "McCain's base," and to admit that there was anything wrong with this freak would be to admit that they were a bunch of clueless dupes.

The book is currently #5 on Amazon in the political books.  Let's push it to #1.

Cliff Schecter for God!

How about this: (2.00 / 2)

Any "democrat" who (a) pledges to vote for McCain or (b) pledges to sit out this election is a GRADE A IDIOT and a JACKASS.

And the people who had Florida and Michigan sit out the election?

Re: How about this: (none / 0)

What does that have to do with stopping the Republicans from taking the White House?

Re: How about this: (2.00 / 0)

If, as Hillary Clinton supporters keep insisting without much evidence, there are Floridians and Michiganers who feel "disenfranchised" because the election that they were told (by Hillary, among others) would not count but now they feel it should count, then DTaylor is right.  Floridians and Michiganers should take action against the people who had them 'sit out the election."

Those voters should vote against those legislators at the state level who pushed up the primaries in clear defiance of warnings not to.

Re: How about this: (2.00 / 0)

While at a dinner party (you know, one of those elitist San Francisco events where we use the flag to wipe our hands, cling to hybrid lattes and laugh at people from small towns) and I floated the idea that I would never vote for Clinton and would rather vote for McCain. Everyone at the table told me I was an idiot.

They were right, and so are you.

Voting for John McCain is not God bless America.

Re: Cure For The Common McCain Defector (2.00 / 1)

Hopefully we can push this far enough that the Press will start talking. It would be wonderful for the common voter (and some of the more informed people ahem) to understand what a nutjob this guy is and how, regardless of your personal feelings, either of our candidates would be worlds better as Commander in Chief.

Re: Cure For The Common McCain Defector (2.00 / 1)

The truth is more deeper and disturbing, this guy is one of the HRC extremists that perceive that 98% of Liberal Bloggers are against their candidate, and if it isn't the blogger themself than it is their associations.

Cliff is quite independent as a blogger but if pushed he works for Brave New Films (producers of Outfoxed) and posts for HuffPo and does a weekly show called Republican Sexscapades on the Young Turks radio show (every week they expose republican politicians and their cronies for sex crimes and hypocrisy, there is new material every week).

My point is the author of this book is THE cutting edge of liberal journalism.
He works his ass off!
And that, unfortunately grinds at some people that view liberal journalists as HRC's #1 enemy.

These people I find are extremely toxic to our party and potential for progress, we shouldn't waste our energy trying to stop them from voting for McCain.

Re: Cure For The Common McCain Defector (2.00 / 1)

I have my book on the way, but have been following Cliff for 2 years now.

Cliff is a hero to our cause.
I remember back in early 2007 when he announced this project. He simutaneously did investigative work on Rudy too.

And yes, he needs to be back on TV!  He has a titanium backbone and incredible wit.

Read his public statements about the controversey started by the book:

Anyone who is even considering voting for mccain should google peak oil and spend some time reading various sites and articles on the subject.

I request my library buy books like this.  Then maybe a wider audience will find them.

You can buy the book and then donate it to the library.  I think I might just do that here in my conservative enclave.

Re: Cure For The Common McCain Defector (none / 0)

I don't believe any Dem is going to vote for McCain if their candidate is not nominated.  At worst they will sit the election out. But I don't even buy that.

By the time November gets here everybody will forget about the current squabble and will be focused on keeping McCain out of the White House.

It happens every election cycle.

Memories are so short.

Complaints? Now? (none / 0)

Don't go complain about defections when the party is about to nominate Mike Dukakis on steroid.

Did you see the polls?
Pennsylvania, head-to-head matchup:
McCain 49, Obama 39
Do I need to remind you that PA is a democratic state?

In fairness, I think that HRC and Obama BOTH suck as GE candidates. But Obama is without doubts the worst of the two.

We got cornered the day Edward dropped out of the race.

Re: Complaints? Now? (none / 0)

PA is more purple.  Home of the anti-abortion Dems.  In that sense PA is a bell weather state and Obama's "bitter" remarks are going to hurt in my estimation.

Listen, I defended Obama with the Rev. Wright thing, even though I think Wright is looney.  I am telling you I think that "Bittergate" is worse than Willy Horton.

Obama basically bitch-slapped middle America.  And then made it worse by giving the worst explanations about what he meant.

I don't think he has lost by any means but I am really bummed that he said that.

Request for facts (none / 0)

As much as I would love to add to a Clinton/Obama urinary disputation, getting back to McSame.  I read someone that he is (by virtue (sic) of marriage) the wealthiest Senator.  Is that true and can someone provide some links ?  I think "McSame, the wealthiest, by marriage, senator" would be a good phrase to start using.
