McCain, Military Oppose Expanding GI Bill

minee, seemed to give a thumbs down to bipartisan legislation that would greatly expand educational benefits for members of the military returning from Iraq and Afghanistan under the GI Bill.
Sen. McCain introduces his economic plan which includes an alternative tax code.

McCain indicated he would offer some sort of alternative to the legislation to address concerns that expanding the GI Bill could lead more members of the military to get out of the service.

I am trying my best to give him the benefit of a doubt here I really am. but 1) to be worried that expanding the aid we give to those who served the country would lead to more members getting out of the service? SO? didn't they do their part? now we are against helping them because we don't want them to leave?

I really want to give him the benefit of the doubt but his GOP colors are showing

"We are working on proposals of our own -- I'm a consistent supporter of educational benefits for the men and women of the military," McCain saidI want to make sure that we have incentives for people to remain in the military as well as for people to join the military. ... I've talked a lot about veterans' health care, so we'll continue to talk about those issues and how to care for vets. I know I can do that, having been one."

we can't sustain what we are doing and anything, that may lead to more people leaving the military is now bad.

1 of the best ways to get people to join the army was the GI bill, make no mistake its not about getting them to join, to me its about keeping them in.

I dunno,

But the bill, which would dramatically increase educational compensation for American troops, has run into some unexpected resistance, both at the Pentagon and now from McCain, who has remained silent on the issue, saying he had not studied the bill close enough.

to not support this bill and the only reason you give is that it may lead to to many people leaving the military?

They can sign up and die for the country but don't expect us to help them if they survive and come back, right John?

My god, what are they thinking?  Maybe McStooge needs to go to Iraq and fight there, revisit his vietnam days, and see how he feels.

Terribly disturbing...such disrespect for those who have given the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

"thanks" for this information.

The inaccessibility of college level education in (2.00 / 1)

the US to 2/3 of its people, is going to destroy this country's economy if we continue defunding education.

I suppose that's the way it is in a lot of Third World countries...

The rich get richer and the poor get poorer..

Your parents wealth and educational level predicts your own, nomatter how hard you try... you can't escape an unlucky birth.

Its increasingly more and more like that in the US, more so than most other developed nations, according to OECD

The real "monster" (none / 0)

How can he base his candidacy on being a military man then defecate all over the troops just because they might want to drop out after their active-duty tours?

He really does want to bring Vietnam back, apparently, complete with homeless and reviled veterans littering the streets after making some of the greatest sacrifices a human can make in service to the country.

Add to this his negligence of his own issue of campaign finance reform, we're looking at a loser here, folks.

I am really trying to hold back on him. but my fiance is an Iraq War Vet. we are both in school I am in law school, she is still an undergrad since she did 4 years in the army, in Korea and then in Iraq.

we live off my student loans and her GI bill, so I am not neutral on this issue at all, we have a 2 year old daughter.

so yeah damn straight I wouldn't mind to see the GI bill increased. and I am only indirectly effected by this. I can't imagine what other Vets think of McCain when he does crap like this.

The GOP just piss me off to no avail I just can't help but see them as hypocrites, they decry democrats all day long as unpatriotic and not supporting the troops. then they have no problem with saying eh expanding the GI bill may go to far.

I am just really disappointed in McCain and I hope he QUICKLY comes out with his comparable plan.

and when we hit the GE I don't care if its Hillary or Barack, they DAMN well better hit McCain with this EVERY DAMN DAY, especially if this bill fails because we don't get enough votes.

its at 57, 3 more and they hit filibuster proof. McCain as the Republican nominee could be one and easily bring 2 more with him.

maverick indeed.

It is a horrible disgrace that we don't care for our returning vets.  Shame, shame on him.  All this talk about his service to our country and what that means about his character...

We have to do more than just say shame.. (none / 0)

we have to do something to help them ourselves, if its possible.

Communities have to take up the slack, if the Federal government won't do it.

I don't know what we can do, but maybe we should start brainstorming. 9-11 survivors, too.

They need help.

I agree that the private sector needs to do more.  But the government should be stepping up to meet basic needs first - how much can the private sector help if there are long term medical needs or a lack of formal education?  These things have to be covered by our tax dollars.
