Google Punahou: Obama's Prep School

People need to start looking at Barack's "humble beginnings".

This is what I THINK I know so far about Barack:

Barack's FATHER was reported to be a goat-keeper from Kenya - but I think it was Barack's grandfather who apparently had enough goats to send his son (Barack's father) from Africa to the U of Hawaii.

Barack's stepfather, LoLo Soetero, took his new wife Ann and Barack to Jakarta during political chaos (see "The Year of Living Dangerously") and some have cited both Barack's bio father and stepfather as leftist (Marxist) activists.

Barack's mother has been described as naive and a free-spirited beatnik (who found the dough to get a PHD). She is praised as a single parent after divorcing two men in 6 years, then sending her son Barack to Honolulu to be raised by her mother who was a bank vice president.

Barack attended the elite Punahou prep school, which costs around $17,000 today for elementary school. Barack says that Hawaii was very diverse and that he didn't face Jim Crow racism.

Shrum said today on "Meet the Press" that Michelle and Barack just finished paying their school loans - hard to believe considering Michelle's $300K salary and corporate board position.

If you think that Barack is a phoenix arising from the ashes of American disadvantage, think again. He is a product of privilege. It is no surprise that he would stand in a multi-million dollar house in SF and talk about the bitter small town Americans who turn to guns, religion and antipathy.

Interesting.  I have heard much the same before, but do you have some sources for what you have gathered? I'd like to read about it more in depth.

Re: Google Punahou: Obama's Prep School (2.00 / 1)

Barack Obama hardly came from hardship, we all know that, his own books tell the story. he was not impovrished, he was not poor and he was only raised by a single mother for a very short period of time. he also only went to public school for his first two years of school, everythng after 1st grade and kindergarden was private school.

Re: Google Punahou: Obama's Prep School (none / 0)

His father came to the U.S. on a private scholarship.

Obama got into his prep-school also on a scholarship.  In fact his mother was on food stamps when he was a youth.

Re: Googled (2.00 / 2)

I totally agree with everything you have said.  I think it funny this whole BO the common man nonsense.  He is a child of privalige.

But i must disagree with this part.

Michelle and Barack just finished paying their school loans.  My guess is they had well over 150,000 to 200,000 in school debt.  I can say from experience it is hard to pay that off until you are in your 40's.

Re: Googled (none / 0)

Funny. As a black child of a single mother who also went to school on scholarships it's nice to know that I'm privileged.

Re: Googled (2.00 / 1)

Funny as a white child from a single mother growing up in a changing area of chicago who had to go to public school and chicago city college because my parents couldnt afford to send me to private school i would not know about scholarships.

Also i dont remember calling you privilaged and i dont think it is right for you to throw that at me.  Privileged is growing up with wealth.

And one last thing i think it prettly low class that you made my post about you.  And what does your race have to do wiht this??  For what reason do you think you need to make this about race???

Did you live in one of the wealthest parts of HI.  Because i didnt.  I didnt live with my grand mother who was a VP for a bank.

Oh this is going to be fun. (none / 0)

We'll start here.

What neighborhood did you grow up in?

Why wouldn't you know about SCHOLARSHIPS if your parents (um single mom?) COULDN'T afford schools?

Re: Oh this is going to be fun. (2.00 / 1)

I grew up in Austin that borders Oak Park and is in western chicago, which suffered from some of the worst race relations in America in the early 70's and was on the rational news many times because of white flight and real estate agents coming in and scaring whites to move before their home values went down.  It was a typical working class neighborhood with weak public school and no magnet school those went to wealth neighborhoods.

And my parents are divorced and everyone has parents even if they don't live together.  And what SCHOLARSHIP would I get.  Like many working class families my parent's incomes was just above what is required for a need scholarship but not enough to pay for college.  So I did what so many students like me do, I worked in the summers to pay for school (driving a bus) and commuted to a city college.

But you forgot to address my quetion of what race has to do with this.

Re: Oh this is going to be fun. (none / 0)

So your parents made too much money for scholarships? Hm. My mother didn't. Nor did Obama's mother apparently.

So you grew up in Austin and then went where? And at what age?

Re: Oh this is going to be fun. (2.00 / 1)

First off young man your tone is insulting! When you have accomplished what i have then you can speak to me with that tone.  BO comes from wealth and how he got a scholarship is none of my affair.

Furthermore, i made no statements about your family and you need to get off this.  And my history is my own and the tone of your questions is, at best, immature.  As was your raising the issue of race in your post.  Where did i go.  MD, PHD at the University of Chicago.  So move on.

Re: Oh this is going to be fun. (none / 0)

Ah. You don't want to examine who is actually privileged I see. Shocking.

We didn't even get to the issue of race and the burdens of that yet.

Re: Oh this is going to be fun. (2.00 / 1)

Dude,

Privileged is a word you don't understand. Education does not determine privilege.  And suggesting i am privileged because of my accomplishments shows a total lack of maturity.

And any time you want to discuss race let me know because i know what racism is and I have seen it up close in all its evil and dehumanizing behavior.  So give up your condescending attitude it makes you look foolish. And i don't think it is fun pointing out the lack of thoughtfulness of your statements.

We haven't determined how privileged you are yet. You won't talk about it.

How long were you in Austin? Where did you go after that and when?

Punahou school is supposed to be for (2.00 / 2)

native hawaiians, and focuses on language and culture retention.  The only way he got in there was money and influence.   Hence his elite status to get into that school, taking a spot that should have been for native hawaiian people.

Re: Punahou school is supposed to be for (none / 0)

You're confusing Punahou with Kamehameha School.  Punahou is simply an extremely elite extremely expensive high quality preparatory K-12 school.  It was founded in 1841 to serve the colonial elite.

Re: Google Punahou: Obama's Prep School (2.00 / 1)

OK, I started this post, so I'd like to add a few things.  I misspelled Ann's second husbands name - it is Soetoro, and there are plenty of google hits regarding him.  Re: Obama Senior, he was sponsored by an English professor who helped him get a scholarship through her connections - not through the Kennedy connection that Barack recently claimed.  Obama Senior went back to Kenya and worked as a senior economics wonk to President Kenyatta, and then deteriorated.  Stanley Ann Dunham also brings up lots of hits.  In addition to Barack's grandmother being a bank officer, his grandfather had successful furniture stores in Seattle and Hawaii.  There is no evidence that Barack got a scholarship to Punahou, but please give the details if you know, as well any details regarding Harvard scholarships.

Here is what privilege is:  something (money, connections, power, luck, whatever) in life gives you ACCESS to the prep schools, Harvards, and presidential bids.  I don't have as much problem with people becoming successful through privilege as I do with the disingenuity of pretending that it is self-earned and deserved.

Re: Google Punahou: Obama's Prep School (2.00 / 1)

And by the way, Barack's half-sister, Maya Soetero-Ng, ALSO attended Punahou and got her Ph.D at University of Hawaii.  I wonder if she got a scholarship....the more you look, the more clear it is that there is a huge privileged background, at least quite more than my background.
