Elitists on MyDD?

Was amazed to log on and find a slew of diaries and comment's attacking Barack Obama for pointing out that regular people - you know, working class and hard-pressed middle class folks are having a tough time in today's economy, and are bitter about it.  Actually bitter, IMHO is too soft a word; pissed off and angry, worried and frightened is more like it.

Was almost amused at the attacks on Senator Obama for being an elitist, except it isn't really funny.  Of the three people running for office, only one has known economic hard times;  Barack Obama.  Granted, he is now upper middle class, but certainly can't be counted as part of the multi-millionaire crowd.

Made me curious about who posts here.  Hence the poll.

I'm not an elite.  I teach as an adjunct faculty person, I'm semi-retired but can't afford not to work.  My awesome salary of about 10,000 a year doesn't pay many bills, but I get health coverage, which is why I'm working.  My husband commutes four hours a day to a working class job because where we live is economically distressed. Our small neighborhood upstate NY has about 85 homes in foreclosure.  There are over 200 "for sale by owner" signs; the owners are  older people who can't pay the taxes, but no one is buying. There are long lines at the bottle return machines in the local supermarkets, and my neighbors, including me, all clip coupons.  We shop more at the local dollar stores than in the fancy stores in the mall.

I'm blessed because I am in a union and get free eyeglasses and have dental coverage.  But my co-pays just went up.  I don't go to the doctor as often as I should.

We sold our former house because our taxes were too high and had to move to an area further away from jobs that pay well.

My husband grew up in the projects.  He was lucky to get a basketball scholarship to help pay for school, and GI benefits - he served in Nam.  I've been on unemployment quite a few times in my life, and have gotten food stamps too.  With a college degree. Thankfully those days are behind me - but my future is not looking too bright and my small pension won't cover any unexpected expenses - like a new roof.  We worry about the age of our furnace.  I wear sweaters instead of turning up the heat.  I plan trips to the supermarket and shops to cut down on gas costs.  We have no public transportation here.

We're better off than many of our neighbors.  We both have jobs.  We don't owe car payments.  We rarely eat out - I make lots of stew and use cheaper cuts of meat.   I have a garden and raise veggies, and have hens for eggs.

I am dismayed by the costs - human and  economic - of the war.  Local schools have cut back on supplies, textbooks, and many kids aren't even learning to use computers. Our roads are crumbling, bridges are dangerous, our river is polluted, and propane (home heating) prices just went up again.

I'm happy I don't have a water bill - we have a well. We have a lot of "poaching" up here; folks hunt deer in and out of season to put meat on the table.

Am I "bitter" about our economy - you bet. Are my neighbors mad as hell - yup. My next door neighbor, an Italian-American 65 year old woman, long time Republican, switched parties for the primary.  I was stunned when she told me she voted for Barack Obama.  She said she wasn't real comfortable about him at first, because she saw him as an unknown.  She wasn't worried about him being "black", she was more interested in what she read in the paper about him changing politics as usual.  She doesn't have a computer, can't afford cable so doesn't watch CNN or MSNBC but does read the local paper.  She was inclined to vote for Hillary she said, but was discouraged that promises Senator Clinton made about revitalizing upstate New York's economy never happened.

I have family members in PA.  Some are middle class, others are working class.  Many who are my age or older are living on fixed incomes.  Two are worried about losing their homes.   My aunt and uncle just moved in with their son because they couldn't afford the modest rent on their retirement apartment.  We just took up a family collection to pay for the funeral of another relative who was on disability.  Hospital costs had eaten up all his savings.  He was a retired Philadelphia city worker.

So, I'd like to poll this community to get a sense of where you stand on the economy.  To find out if this is a group of elites, or if there are any folks here who can truly identify with hard times and tight pocketbooks, and if any of you are bitter too.   I'll be back later to see the results - I'm on my way to return bottles, after my trip to the dump (I can't afford garbage pickups anymore).

Re: Elitists on MyDD? (2.00 / 2)

Your premise regarding Obama's comments is wrong. You and the media keep focusing on the word "bitter". That is not the crux of the anger that some people are feeling about his comment. He suggested that these bitter people "cling to guns and to their religion and antipathy to people who aren't like them" to express their frustration." Although Obama, his supporters and the media are trying very hard to reframe the argument, the working class heard it and know what he really said and they are rightfully insulted.

Re: Elitists on MyDD? (2.00 / 1)

but if ALL the media will focus on is the word bitter,

then guess what, this is all about the word bitter.

you can say hey there is more, but the rural voters aren't political junkies they aren't on the blogs, they watch the news and to them the debate is about the word bitter.

Obama said, as Bill beamed. "Thank you, President Clinton."

Re: Elitists on MyDD? (none / 0)

People do cling to guns, antipathy, religion, scapegoating - when they are frustrated and don't know how to express it or see a way out.

Ever heard of "crabs in a barrel?"

Watch Lou Dobbs - he fuels this stuff nightly.

When I was union organizing we had to spend lots of time educating folks about who their real enemies were - not some nearby ethnic group, or undocumented workers, but the corporate elites and bankers who get richer each day, while workers get poorer.

The divide and conquer game has worked in this country for years.  The "yellow-peril", the "hordes of Irish", the "Eastern European Jews"...in parts of NYC now it's the "Russians".

I think what scares people about Obama's campaign is that it has united such a broad cross-section of folks from diverse backgrounds - and the foundation of the funding is populist.  This is a real threat to the staus quo.  Hence the silly smears and twisting of his words.  I have a feeling that the smear tactics will backfire on the ones who use it.

So - did you vote in the poll above?

Obama Defends His Comments About Pa. Voters

Excerpt

For 25, 30 years, Democrats and Republicans have come before them and said we're going to make your community better. We're gonna make it right. And nothing ever happens.

Re: Elitists on MyDD? (none / 0)

I disagree about the guns and religion part. Religion has been a part of the rural culture for generations, and has nothing to do with what the government does. It's just part of the ambient culture.

Same with guns. It has been a matter of survival many times in the past, and the people don't forget that it may be survival in the future. Try living in the country, without any kind of police protection (that can get there in less than an hour, which could be an eternity) and the possibility of going hungry unless you have a way to hunt. That is the reality for rural people, and they KNOW IT.

I live in a very rural area, and we are very happy to have guns that we can hunt with if push comes to shove. It's PRACTICALITY.

Re: Elitists on MyDD? (none / 0)

We all have guns here too - in upstate NY.  But the gun issue has been used to push rural folks into the arms of Republicans.  I wish more pols would discuss the fact that folks are living off of deer/possum/squirrel/game birds.  It isn't sport - it's survival.

I also find it a bit laughable that Sen. Clinton is now trying to paint herself as a  childhood gun person.

Re: Elitists on MyDD? (none / 0)

I don't think it's BS, myself. Since she was raised by Republicans, it is entirely possible that she was taught how to use guns. In my area, children as young as 7 or 8 are taught how to use them, properly and safely.

Re: Elitists on MyDD? (none / 0)

Actually, I find it odd since it hasn't come up in the past.  She has taken a fairly strong anti-gun stance, which is why I found it surprising.

And you don't have to be a Republican to grow up with guns.  My family survived through the depression with plenty meat on the table because my uncle was a hunter.  I grew up with guns. My dad had guns, to protect our family from the KKK.
He was not a follower of the MLK non-violence theory.  He believed in self-defense.

Re: Elitists on MyDD? (none / 0)

That's true that you don't have to be a Repub to grow up with guns. I was just thinking that they are so pro-gun that it would be an everyday part of their lives.

In othe words, you don't have to be a Repub to have and use guns, but usually Repubs have and use guns.

Well, at least it seems that way. :-D

Re: Elitists on MyDD? (2.00 / 1)

Thank you for sharing your personal story. We actually don't hear enough personal stories on the news about how people are effected by the decisions made by our leaders. So I'm glad this bitter story came up maybe this will create more awareness as to what this country is going through. I wish you and your family my very best.

Re: Elitists on MyDD? (2.00 / 1)

I certainly drive less because of gas prices, but I would think most people do. Still have health insurance, but in danger of losing it. Don't go to the doctor when I'm sick because of copays, which really aren't that high, all things considered, but there's no reason to waste money. If I'm so sick I can't function, I'll give in and go. I do have to go to the doctor sometimes because of a chronic problem, but I only go often enough to make sure he writes my prescription. Lots of student loans. I've never had food stamps, but I know what it's like to have to make a decision about who'll have to go hungry during a given week -- me or the cats. And the cats always eat. I haven't had to deal with that scenerio since '04, but I'm close to being in that position again. I'm not really working class, but I know what it's like to hurt for cash. I guess most people do.

I do have a few excesses -- I love expensive coffee and wine, but those aren't things I can often indulge in lately. Haven't had a glass of wine in months. Based on my level of education (which is ongoing), I guess some people would call me elitist, but it's hard to feel terribly elite when you're eating cheap crap, struggling to pay the bills, and can't go hang out with your friends because you can't afford it (unless you're willing to just sit around in someone's house).

Even John McCain lusts after teh engels.
