Obama visited Pakistan in College?

A story that ran in the Huffington Post was actually meant to point out Obama's arrogance regarding foreign policy, however I found the part about his travels to Pakistan during College to be more interesting since we had not heard this before. Obama stated at a San Francisco fundraiser the other night that he did not need a VP with foreign policy experience because he knew enough and had more FP experience than either John McCain or Hillary Clinton.

He pointed to a trip he took to Pakistan in College to visit his mother (who was living there at the time).

The writer went on to point out his arrogrance when he compared his college trip to Pakistan and few years in Indonesia as reason enough to claim he had better foreign policy experience than McCain or Clinton.

She wrote:

[There are a number of interesting things about Senator Obama's remarks. If Senators Clinton and McCain have not passed "those tests," likely they will be surprised to hear it. Secondly, even though I've researched and written on Hillary Clinton's trips abroad and consequently been critical of her claims, my estimation of her foreign travels is that they were sometimes quite a bit more than a dance, a briefing and a tour. What Barack Obama's remarks last night in San Francisco reveal, however, is his self-confidence--to the point of cockiness--right now.]

Link is here:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/mayhill-fo wler/obama-says-no-to-foreign_b_95357.ht ml

But I actually found something else that was more interesting in the article and that is that Obama had never talked about or discussed his College trip to Pakistan before, he didn't mention it in any of his books.

It may be no big deal, but Jake Tapper mentions on his abc news blog that his "trip to Pakistan was news to many of us who have been following the race closely. It was odd that we hadn't heard about it before, given all the talk about Pakistan during the campaign."

read the blog here:

http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/ 2008/04/obamas-college.html

And, Ben Smith at Politico has more details on his trip here:

http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/0 408/A_trip_to_Pakistan.html

Ben Smith points out that while no one was aware of Obama's travels to Pakistan, it would be interesting to know more about it since this is a somewhat unusual trip for an American College student to take.

My take on this is how come we haven't heard about it?  Even if he was just visiting his mother - doesn't it leave more interpretation about his background open for speculation?

(makes you wonder what that guy that breached Obama's security regarding his passport was looking for?)

It will be interesting to see if anything comes of this story or if it is simply dropped.

He obviously went to study in a madrassa because he's an al-Qaeda sleeper agent.

That is what you were implying, right?

No lefty kids go to Pakistan in 81 when President Zia was ruling the country. They may go to India or Nepal or Tibet but not to Pakistan.

No, because there is no discussion about this silly little diary.

Or are you just going to keep re-posting the same "Why would he go to Pakistan" comment? That doesn't really make it a "discussion," y'know.

Obama is a Muslim "Yuri". Brilliantly he threw everyone off track last week by eating that piece of filthy pig at the deli in Philly. And he leaked the Rev Wright stuff himself to further cover his tracks.

I hitch-hiked from London to India in 1978.  Right across Iran, Baluchistan, Afghanistan and Pakistan.    I hiked the Khyber Pass just for fun.  It's a big wide world, friend, beyond your perceptions.

Re: Obama visited Pakistan in College? (2.00 / 3)

I wasn't the only one.  I met a young Spanish couple stranded in Nok Kundi with a hole in the fuel tank of their venerable Citroën 2CV and found a local shop that had some Araldite, of all things.  I patched it up overnight and they gave me a lift all the way to Quetta.  We had to manhandle the Citroën over the occasional sand dunes that blew across the paved road but it was an amazingly light little car.  I spent nine months in India and then went and worked in Borneo and Sumatra for a few years with an American geophysical company.  I have never returned to the US for a really extended stay, I live in Australia now.

My support for Obama is largely predicated on my experiences outside of the continental US, it is a big, wide and wonderful world.  Far more complex and hospitable than our foreign policy would lead us to believe.

Re: Obama visited Pakistan in College? (2.00 / 2)

Yeah, I had to stop hitch-hiking when I got to Pakistan, they just didn't understand the idea of giving a ride for free.  I ended up taking buses to Rawalpindi then trains and buses to India.  I had to leave Kabul in a hurry, the coup had just happened, I went to the Post office to collect my poste restante to find that it had been burned down that morning, that night there was a lot of civil unrest in the streets below our hotel and the proprietor hastily escorted his 'European' guests to a relative's house for our safety.  The next morning I took a mini-bus to as close as I could get to the Pakistani border and walked across, there was no passport control or anything and it seemed wise to get out of Afghanistan while the getting was good.  It took me two days to walk out and across the Khyber Pass.  I was pretty relieved to get to 'civilisation' in Pakistan at the time and board a bus to Peshawar.

There was a press release from the campaign on TPM about his a couple days ago.  I'm looking for it.

But basically, Obama and a friend went to Indonesia to visit his mother and sister for three weeks, and then went to Karachi to visit his friend's family for three weeks.

Re: Obama visited Pakistan in College? (none / 0)

Actually...since no one else seems to make mention of this, a lot of lefty kids did go to Pakistan in the 1980's.  In 1979, just two years before Obama's trip, the Soviets invaded Afghanistan.  In response, Adullah Azzam, a popular radical Islamist leader, issued a fatwa declaring that both the Afghan and Palestinian struggles were jihads and that expelling/killing the Soviets was fard ayn (a personal obligation) for all Muslims.  Young Muslims from around the world answered Azzam'a call, including bin Laden.  A number of these Muslims were college grads from the US, in fact Azzam came to the US and recruited them.  And they came to Pakistan.  These Afghan Arabs, as they became known, later evolved into al Qaeda under bin Laden's leadership.

The fact that Obama visited Pakistan at this time by itself isn't significant, but when you add other "factors", it at least raises questions, for example: Obama's Muslim heritage, education and name; Obama's militant Muslim brother in Kenya; Obama's Muslim friend who he went to Pakistan with, Rezko, Nadhmi Auchi, Farrakhan who has ties to Muammar Ghaddafi a known Islamist terrorist supporter, Nation of Islam staffers, Gaza city fundraisers not to mention all that money Obama's raising, Wright, etc.

It doesn't take too much imagination to jump from these "facts" to the supposition that Obama is being backed to some degree by pro-radical Islamists, right or wrong. So even if there's nothing to the trip, be sure the GOP will make it seem like something.

Re: Obama visited Pakistan in College? (2.00 / 4)

You could have posted that part from the post of Jake Tapper explaining the trip instead of implying  a cheap smear:

[So I asked the Obama campaign for more information.

Apparently, according to the Obama campaign, In 1981 -- the year Obama transferred from Occidental College to Columbia University -- Obama visited his mother and sister Maya in Indonesia. After that visit, Obama traveled to Pakistan with a friend from college whose family was from there. The Obama campaign says Obama was in Pakistan for about three weeks, staying with his friend's family in Karachi and also visiting Hyderabad in Southern India.]

Re: Obama visited Pakistan in College? (2.00 / 3)

But when we include that kind of information, it makes it really hard to not-so-subtly imply that one of our candidates is a member of a sleeper cell.  That makes for a boring diary!

so i'll let you in on a little secret.  when you travel long distances, it is not unusual to stop someplace for food, gas or tourism.  but i understand both your desperation and your naivete.  after all, your candidate has run one of the worst presidential campaigns in history, even though you no doubt believe she's entitled to the presidency.

after you drink the kool-aid, i'd imagine, it's pretty hard to return to reality...

Re: Obama visited Pakistan in College? (none / 0)

I will admit it's quite a leap from, I visited a country while in college to being a expert in international affairs.

I think the point he was trying to make was that he actually had experience in other countries that extends beyond they typical diplomatic staged events.  If you listen to the rest of the talk he mentions how shallow the typical diplomatic mission ends up being.  A few staged events and photo ops which really don't give any insight into the different cultures.

I would guess that after the Passport thing they went back and scrubbed his history for every trip he ever made and took the initiative to frame this trip rather than having it framed for him.

Sadly this would not be a conversation for any other candidate left in the field.

The good news, I don't think visiting Pakistan will be an issue, especially after it has already been noted that he lived in Indonesia, a country with the largest Muslim population in the world.

One other quick note, Ben over at Politico enjoyed  a great night with Elton John last night which he writes about in his latest diary.

I think you get the point.

Shame on You. (none / 0)

I could have given the diarist the benefit of the doubt - that this was interesting news that had not ever been covered - about one of our candidates.....Until the point where you said this:

"My take on this is how come we haven't heard about it?  Even if he was just visiting his mother - doesn't it leave more interpretation about his background open for speculation?
(makes you wonder what that guy that breached Obama's security regarding his passport was looking for?)It will be interesting to see if anything comes of this story or if it is simply dropped."

The right-wing fear-mongering and the rhetorical concern-language lead me to the conclusion that you should be ashamed.
